The MINI Cooper D is one of those very rare cars that's a blast to drive and also happens to be relatively green. Thank maker BMW for both those qualities, with the German firm's reputation for dynamic prowess clearly evident in the iconic hatch, as well as the carbon cleanliness afforded by its EfficientDynamics programme.
As of 2010, the Cooper D's road tax will drop from £35 per year to £20 per year. Granted, it's only a £15 saving, but as Tesco so eloquently puts it, every little helps. Consider too that the Cooper D posts similar performance statistics to a 2.0-litre petrol Alfa Romeo 147, for example, yet the Italian will command £215 in road tax next year.
If only BMW had scrubbed up the Cooper's diesel engine a little more and dragged it into the no charge 'up to 100g/km' band A, the MINI would have even more marketability. Still, few cars, if any, can match the Cooper D's smiles-per-g/km ratio.
