Geneva Motor Show 2008

New BMW M3 should get airing in Geneva

One of the most keenly anticipated new cars of the year, as far as enthusiasts are concerned in any case, is the new BMW M3. Though not yet officially confirmed, we are pretty confident that BMW will bring along a preview to the new car at the Geneva Show.

Based on the formidable new 3 Series Coupé, we have high hopes for the latest M-car. Bearing in mind the move from V8 to V10 power for the range-topping BMW M5 and M6, it is widely anticipated that the new M3 will feature a V8 of some description, probably naturally aspirated. Seeing as Audi's RS4 produces up to 414bhp, expect the M3 to get closer to the 450bhp mark. We would be surprised if the M3 is anything other than rear-wheel drive.

Body styling should follow the successful formula of the outgoing M3, where the changes to the regular coupé's shape are modest, but still obviously of sporting intent. A small rear lip spoiler might be present, but we are certain to see the trademark use of four exhausts and stylised vents in the front wings.

The M3 is also likely to follow its bigger M-brothers by the use of advanced electronic controls, but we would hope that a proper manual gearbox is still offered alongside the sequential manual version. We should know more once the covers are taken off the show car in Geneva.
