BMW X3
You shouldn't be surprised to hear that BMW's smallest 4x4 was developed to be more of a road car than proper off-roader. Until we try the new Freelander for ourselves, the X3 is by far the most capable road car featured here, with genuinely enjoyable driving dynamics and a range of gutsy engines.
As with the other higher-end cars featured, the BMW is not a cheap car to buy and if you are migrating from a new 3 Series you'll be disappointed by its interior design and lack of tactility. Still, refinement is good and the diesel engine is fairly economical.
X3 owners will no doubt love the fact that their car could be mistaken for the larger BMW X5 at a glance, but the shape is aging now and the other cars here show how much SUV styling has moved on in recent years
