Kia Sportage

We considered including Hyundai's solid little Tucson, but its distant cousin, the Kia Sportage is a newer model and has a better chance to be taken seriously against the more expensive and arguably more desirable upmarket rivals featured here.

Not that the Sportage gives away much in the looks department. Sure, the Kia badge holds little prestige or showroom appeal, but the Sportage's styling is bang on, mixing smooth lines with a distinctive profile and in the case of the V6 models, chunky dual exhaust pipes.

In fairness to Kia though, beauty does run more than sheet metal deep in the Sportage and it is a capable and mild-mannered road car, as well as a moderately good off-roader. It certainly puts up with basic SUV tasks such as towing and carrying stuff with ease and its basic price will ensure that it endears itself to many buyers. No wonder Kia is expanding rapidly.
