It's a danger to be taken in by the hype and media frenzy surrounding the launch of a new car, where the rule of thumb often seems to be that the latest is the greatest. So it is with the Land Rover Freelander 2, due to be revealed to the public for the first time at the London Motor Show in July.

We've seen the car in the metal and actually in action on and off road at Land Rover's proving grounds and I for one won't be betting against the Freelander 2 being at the top of its class dynamically.

The new Freelander has been moved upmarket a little from the outgoing car, with a 2.2-litre diesel and 3.2-litre petrol being the only engine options at present. Fit and finish wouldn't put the Freelander's bigger Range Rover siblings to shame though and the new car includes a version of Land Rover's much lauded Terrain Response system to ensure that the car lives up to the Land Rover name.
