Suzuki has teetered on the edges of the mainstream for a number of years with its small off-roaders. The first offerings were tiny though incredibly agile off road. The Vitara nameplate has been around for a while now though has perhaps been seen as a bargain basement choice.

That was until Suzuki decided to drop a V6 engine and seven seats into the previous generation XL-7 Vitara, creating a remarkably refined road car, built on the platform of an old-school off-roader. Then Suzuki launched the all-new Grand Vitara, looking suspiciously like the outgoing Toyota RAV4 with the added bonus that the new three-door Suzuki Grand Vitara didn't have the smaller RAV4 to compete with anymore.

Modern styling aside, the new Vitara has turned out to be a genuinely good car with new engines and a versatile interior to go along with very competitive pricing. It undercuts the Toyota and Land Rover, but those cars are noticeably of higher quality.
