With news recently of extravagant new hypercars such as the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport and Pininfarina's Hyperion, it should be no surprise to hear that supercar owners already have the option to have part of their pride and joy coated in gold leaf.
London-based Alchemist is one company offering this ultimate car customisation to wealthy owners and it has been applying gold to Bentleys, Porsches, Mercedes and Astons since early this year.
Jacques Blanc, a French art director managing Alchemist, told us; "Gold-leafing vehicles isn't a new luxury. The Egyptians mastered the technique more than 3,000 years ago and Tutankhamun's chariot was decorated with gold leaves. We are simply continuing this ancient and opulent tradition."
However, the latest technology is used on car roofs, which start at £12,500 for a signed and numbered finish, plus a certificate of authenticity. Some buyers are known to have spent considerably more for embedded gemstones.
Alchemist will display a unique version of the Aston Martin DBS at the MPH shows later this year, which will be completely gilded in 24-carat gold and platinum.
MPH08 runs in Earls Court, London from 30 October to 2 November before moving to the NEC in Birmingham between November 13 - 16.
