Aston Martin may be as British as roast beef and warm beer, but the sports car firm's new management is looking to foreign shores to build its new Rapide saloon. If production of the super saloon heads abroad, it will be the first time in the company's 93-year history that it will build a car outside of the UK.
Having recently shut the doors on its historic Newport Pagnell factory, Aston Martin is now looking into the feasibility of making the Rapide abroad, though the firm says UK jobs will be unaffected. There's no confirmation on which country Rapide production would be in, though Italy, Germany and Finland are all thought to be strong contenders as they are home to specialist manufacturing companies.
The V12-engined Rapide is due to be launched in 2009 and development is well advanced. However, some Aston insiders fear that a car built abroad may lose some of the brand's British-ness.
