Volvo XC60 Concept

The premium mid-sized SUV market used to be a niche occupied mainly by the BMW X3, but then Land Rover moved the new Freelander up market and VW showed the Tiguan 'concept' in LA. The next entrant will be Volvo, with the XC60, which will be closely related to the XC60 Concept that Volvo is bringing along to the Detroit Show.

Though Volvo has saddled the show car with the 'concept' tag, it is likely that the exterior design in particular is pretty much ready to hit your local Volvo showroom. Unfortunately for buyers, that won't be happening until 2009. In the meantime, the concept might persuade a few buyers to hold off on ordering a competitor.

The XC60 contains a few neat features, including a lower tailgate section that slides out and up to allow loading even when there is restricted height, in your garage for instance. Inside, the show car does look more like a concept car, with a funky iPod-esque touch-sensitive centre console.
