Audi A6 allroad quattro, The all-round choice

Look at the changes Audi has made to the A6 Avant to create the A6 allroad quattro and you'd have to think it had skiers specifically in mind as target customers. It features all the prestige of its A6 sisters but with a chunkier, more rugged look and higher ground clearance too. Fit some snow tyres and combined with the quattro four-wheel drive system you'll get up the mountain in any weather. The body wears wheel-arch over-riders, tougher bumpers and side valances that help keep the muck (or snow) off the sides of the car when the going gets a bit tricky. Those wheel-arch extensions don't just look good but help protect the bodywork from the inevitable scratches caused by trying to park in and around alpine areas - space is always very tight.

Inside there are easy to clean tougher carpets, a ski hatch and all the prestige and comfort you'd expect in an executive car - including heated seats. Three engines are offered, but the best of the bunch is the 3.0-litre TDI. Opt for the automatic gearbox, satnav and a roof box for your skis and you've the perfect machine to whisk you to the mountains in style and comfort.
