Many target buyers may be too young to remember the heydays of the Abarth name, but it once meant the ultimate in performance and racing Fiats. Apparently, it's set for a huge comeback, with a relaunch at the Geneva Motor Show.
Alongside a race-ready rally version, set to compete in the new S2000 category, Fiat will unveil the Grande Punto Abarth in Geneva on the second media day, hoping to develop the brand to compete with the likes of 'ST', 'GTI' or SEAT's Cupra moniker. We know that other Abarth models are in the pipeline too, including an Abarth version of the stylish new Bravo and even a sporty 500 Abarth.
In the meantime, the Grande Punto Abarth shares styling cues with the more extreme rally car, such as distinctive five-spoke alloys and a split-level, full-length grille at the front. Thankfully, the road car is a little more restrained elsewhere, with a discreet rear spoiler, wheelarch extensions and a wire-mesh grille. We expect the side stripes to be optional too.
Under the bonnet of the Grande Punto Abarth will be the new 1.4-litre T-Jet engine making its debut in the Bravo. Though of small size, this new direct-injection petrol unit employs turbocharging to good effect, releasing up to 150bhp and 170lb.ft of torque. We have yet to see what the interior looks like, but expect a sprinkling of sporty new components, such as the seats, steering wheel and gauges. We'll take a closer look in Geneva.
