Honda Civic Hybrid

Despite the fact that Toyota has hogged all the hybrid limelight in recent years, Honda was one of the pioneers of the technology, but today sells just one model with a hybrid powertrain. The Civic Hybrid was designed from the outset to be a highly fuel efficient car, but without feeling any different to a regular family saloon.

Honda chose to use the four-door saloon body style for the hybrid, instead of the hatch we get in Britain so it looks different from the outset, especially with its unusual aerodynamic wheels and narrow low rolling resistance tyres. Inside, the hatch's distinctive two-tier dashboard is retained, though the readout for the IMA system (Integrated Motor Assist) takes centre stage.

Under the bonnet is an efficient 1.4-litre petrol engine with direct injection. It's allied to an electric motor and a large battery that is charged under braking and if necessary from the engine itself. Unlike the Lexus hybrids, the Honda uses the motor while cruising and the petrol engine for acceleration.
