Six is the magic number for Peugeot as it has introduced a range of six-speed gearboxes to the 308 line-up.
The first is a six-speed manual gearbox for the HDi 110 turbodiesel powered models that replaces the original five-speeder.
This 'box helps increase economy to 62.7mpg and lower emissions to 129g/km of carbon dioxide, with prices starting at £15,395.
Also for the HDi 110 and 90 models is the six-speed Electronic Gearbox Control (EGC) transmission.
This gearbox does away with the clutch pedal and has an automatically operated clutch when the driver selects a gear.
Much like a Formula One car's sequential manual gearbox, the EGC-equipped HDi 90 manages 62.7mpg and emits 120g/km of CO2.
The 308 with the EGC gearbox costs from £16,395.
Peugeot's other new six-speeder is a full automatic 'box.
It's an option for the 2.0-litre 136bhp turbodiesel engined model with a price of £19,545.
There are also a couple of new engine variants for the 308 range, including the £12,295 1.4-litre petrol VTi 95.
The other is the 1.6-litre turbodiesel HDi 90 that costs from £13,595.
