Having overhauled its engine and transmission line-up in the revamped 911, Porsche is steadily rolling out other variations on the theme. This week the new Targa was unveiled.
The new 911 Targa is based on the Carrera 4 models, so it receives the wider body shell, which is further emphasised by a reflective red strip running between the sharp new rear lights. Large writing depicting the model name embellishes the engine cover.
If you miss those cues, it's hard not to notice the uninterrupted glass panelling from windscreen to the base of the rear window. It lends the Targa a unique appearance, accentuated by aluminium strips running over the top of the side glass.
The roof section of glass retracts in just seven seconds at the touch of a button, giving the Targa a feel halfway between that of a full Cabriolet and a Coupé, with a particularly bright cabin even when the glass panel is shut.
To assuage fears of a glasshouse effect when it's sunny, Porsche has fitted anti-glare glass and an electrically operated sunblind on the inside of the roof.
For now, all Targa models will be fitted with the Carrera 4's new PTM four-wheel drive system, though both 3.6- and 3.8-litre flat-six engines will be available in the Targa 4 and Targa 4S respectively.
Following a Paris Show debut, sales of the new Targa will begin in the autumn.
