Fiat has chosen the Dusseldorf Caravan Salon to display its new Portofino for the first time, an open-topped interpretation of the Fiorino Qubo compact MPV.
In collaboration with Vernagallo-Holiday and SALT, two independent conversion and body building companies, Fiat has created an extreme version of the usually practical car.
Fiat cites the iconic beach buggies of the 1960s as an inspiration for the Portofino, which for now does without any weather protection other than the standard car's windscreen.
A roll bar has been created by retaining the Fiorino's B-pillar section and joining them to the windscreen rail. However, the rear occupants are completely exposed to the elements.
The Portofino's interior has also been influenced by the nautical world, with gangway-like rope instead of doors and a wooden 'deck' for the floor. New seats and a repainted dashboard complete the look.
Though the Portofino is touted as a show 'van' only, Fiat alludes to possible powerplant options and even the future option of a roof covering.
