Nissan has created its fourth-generation Advanced Safety Vehicle called the ASV-4, which further refines its ongoing search for greater efficiency in vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems.
The project aims to reduce the type of accident that accounts for 60 percent of crashes on Japan's roads, namely in situations at junctions where other vehicles are not visible. Via the onboard navigation system, drivers are able to 'see' oncoming vehicles as well as being made aware by an audio alert that increases in volume if the driver fails to react initially.
Although in its fourth generation, Nissan acknowledges the system has some way to go before it could become a central part of the industry. "While the system will be tested using real-time navigation information, it currently has some limitations because it is dependent on information received from vehicles equipped with the Nissan navigation system; therefore, participating drivers must remain alert to other vehicles on the road that the system is unable to detect."
Nissan is developing an Intelligent Transport System, which is fed traffic data through road-side beacons by participating customer cars, providing traffic infrastructure that would help reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.
The Japanese manufacturer is also working on a system aimed at reducing pedestrian injuries by alerting drivers to unseen pedestrians through cellular communication, which is sent to the vehicle itself.
