This year, Audi launched its first proper SUV, the Q7 and it is a mighty machine, competing with such established cars as the BMW X5 and Range Rover, but it is very much a 4x4 in the traditional sense and for Audi fans not wishing to sit quite so high up is the allroad quattro.

At first glance, you'd be forgiven for taking the allroad for a regular A6 estate, though look closer and you'll notice a few 'rugged' details, such as the underbody protection front and rear, individual side sills, bespoke wheels with sacrificial sections and a tough-looking upright grille.

Get in and you'll not be roughing it, as the cabin is as plush as any other A6, but you'll notice the option to raise the ride height into off-road mode. Coupled with the quattro all-wheel drive, the allroad actually does quite well away from the beaten track, while being virtually uncompromised as a road car. It's currently the best of the breed.
