Next to the heavyweights, you'd think that the relatively diminutive Suzuki SX4 and Fiat Sedici brothers would be floundering. No, their towing capacity is not as impressive as in the larger cars, but these twins are still worthy of the 4x4 title.

Born of an alliance between Suzuki and Fiat, the little crossover is intended to be a compact family car first and a useful off-roader second. It is admitted that the SX4/Sedici is not intended to plough through muddy ruts while towing a horsebox, but it can cope with slippery surfaces quite well, and has added ground clearance.

Make sure you choose a four-wheel drive version of course, as not all of the Suzuki models come as standard with the 'intelligent' system. The driver can choose to leave the electronics decide when four-wheel drive is needed or he can select it himself, but above certain speeds, the rear wheels are decoupled anyway, saving fuel. Now that's the kind of talk you don't often associate with 4x4s.
