Despite the whole rallying image, the Subaru brand has its roots in the farming community, where it used to be associated with little pick-ups and even four-wheel drive super-minis. It's moved on since then, with the Legacy competing for customers with the BMW 3 Series.

That car has sired the Outback, a soft-roader based on the Sports Tourer (estate) version. Like the Audi, styling modifications are designed to give the Outback a tougher, more utilitarian look, with a deeper front grille and chunkier lower plastic mouldings. Next to the slinky Legacy it does look tough, but it won't scare the Green Party.

The Outback will have no trouble towing a horsebox, thanks in part to the fitment of a 3-litre six-cylinder engine with 242bhp. You won't want to muddy up the styling new interior with your wellys though!
