Like Audi, Volvo was slow to the SUV market, but has found huge success with its own big SUV, the XC90. The other option in the range is the XC70, a milder-looking off-roader based on the worthy V70 estate.

In spite of the XC70's age (in comparison to the Audi and facelifted Subaru), it has a few tricks up its Swedish sleeves. One of which is the strong D5 diesel engine, which has plenty of torque to pull whatever load you wish through a muddy field, though it can be a little raucous. The interior is cavernous too, if showing its age and we'd stay away from the Ocean Race Edition with its gaudy blue interior trim.

The XC70 is likely to remain a firm favourite of people in need of heavy towing capacity in a car-like package.
