Further down the automotive food chain in terms of excitement, but not in terms of sales numbers is the facelifted Toyota Avensis, making its world debut at the Madrid Show.

The changes to the Avensis are numerous, though you might not think it from the exterior. The styling has been tweaked inside and out, with new headlights being the most obvious change. Toyota also claims to have improved the ride and handling thanks to fine tuning the steering and suspension. Under the bonnet will be a choice of two new diesel engines, including a powerful 175bhp version that will power the top of the range T180 model.

Amidst news of factory closures in Britain, the arrival of the new Avensis should reassure workers at Toyota's plant near Derby, where nearly 300,000 cars a year are produced.
