It might look very familiar, but this is actually the latest model from Caterham. To call this Superlight R300 'all-new' would perhaps be a step too far, but the British maker has done plenty to ensure it moves the game forward over the car it replaces.

The previous R300 was powered by the iconic Rover K-Series engine and became Caterham's best seller - a feat the company hopes to replicate with this new model.

So, the now defunct K-Series unit is replaced by a 2.0-litre Ford Duratec engine developing 175bhp and mated to a six-speed gearbox. In a body weighing only 515kg, that power figure equates to 339bhp per tonne. From standstill the Superlight R300 will hit 60mph in only 4.5 seconds and reach 140mph.

The newcomer joins the R400 and R500 to complete the Superlight family, taking styling and performance cues from both. Kit includes a carbon fibre dashboard and front wings, keyless ignition, 15-inch Superlight alloy wheels and wide Superlight suspension. Serious track day fans can also specify data logging instrumentation.

As with all Caterhams, the R300 can be bought in kit form or pre-built, for £24,995 or £27,995 respectively.

But for those who think the R300 is too hardcore, Caterham has also unveiled the Roadsport 175. Powered by the same Ford engine, the Roadsport is essentially a 'touring' version of the R300, equipped with such luxuries as an interior heater. The gearbox also loses a cog, making do with five, and the alloys are an inch smaller. It's also £3,000 cheaper.
