Like the Ford/VW tie-up, the Peugeot 806 is closely related to cars made by Citroen and Fiat, though we prefer the Peugeot version. The upsides first: the 806 is comfortable, particularly in the front two rows of seats; it is cheaper than its rivals for an equivalent specification, and it obtained three stars in the Euro NCAP tests (when the test was out of four).

We found a wide variety of options for £10,000 at Peugeot dealers, with the best deal being on late 2001 cars equipped with Peugeot's excellent 2-litre turbodiesel engine with a modern common-rail injection system. This engine is economical and refined, as well as plenty powerful enough.

The only major downside with the 806 is image; it is the most slab-sided of its generation, showing its commercial vehicle roots. No wonder it is loved by the mini-cab industry...
