It was difficult to choose between the Espace and the VW Sharan for the top spot. In the end, we felt that the Sharan/Galaxy was more plentiful and therefore offered the used buyer a wider choice. The Renault Espace should not be overlooked though.

In fact, the Espace was the first MPV on the market in Britain, and Renault has continually developed the brand alongside its newer small MPVs. For £10,000 you could pick up a 2001 car with about 40,000 miles on the clock. It will be a little more to insure than the winner of the category, but for that money you can afford the lusty 2.2-litre turbodiesel version. The Espace doesn't try to hide its MPV roots, with distinctive styling and a swoopy interior. Spend some time with the car though and you'll appreciate that Renault really knows how to get the most out of a limited space. On top of that, this five-year old car still managed four stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests.
