Though the Ford Galaxy and SEAT Alhambra are all but identical to the VW Sharan, the latter is our choice of the litter. Scouring the dealer forecourts, we found that for your £10,000 you could have a VW Sharan Sport 1.9 TDI on a 2001 'X' plate. The equivalent Ford and SEAT are a little more expensive, don't have the allure of the VW badge, and cost more to insure to boot.

Elsewhere, all three variants are quite similar, though the SEAT has fewer derivatives than the others. We would strongly urge buyers to aim for the excellent turbodiesel engines, which offer decent fuel economy as well as acceptable get up and go. Later models benefited from a 130PS engine. Behind the wheel, the Sharan is the nicest of the MPVs here to drive. Allied to satisfactory accommodation for up to seven and a reputation for durability, the Sharan would be the MPV we'd buy in this category.
