One of the most successful coupés of modern times is the BMW 3 Series and despite a restrained appearance and ubiquitous presence on our roads, has always been one of the best cars in its class to drive. The launch of the latest generation didn't change that.

Take a peek inside one of the top models, such as the 335i or even the diesel-engined 335d and you'd be forgiven for thinking that this coupé is designed as more of a luxury car than a sports coupé, but even a few minutes at the wheel will dispel the illusion. The 3 Series does a fine job of cruising, if that's what you want to do, but as soon as you up the pace you'll discover a deliciously adjustable and dependable chassis. It easily stands up to comparison against the likes of the so-called sports cars in this group and that goes for the diesel models as much as it does for the petrol-fuelled versions.
