The Chinese owners of MG Rover are planning to build cars again at the Longbridge, Birmingham factory.

Since MG Rover was bought by the Shanghai Automobile Industry Corporation (SAIC) in 2006, the plant has not produced any cars.

Now, the plan is to start making Nanjing's version of the MG TF sports car in July.

SAIC's president Chen Hong has said he wants the factory to produce the MG roadster as a full British car rather than from a kit of parts shipped in from China.

There are also plans to start production of the Roewe 550 saloon, which is based on the former Rover 75.

It is thought the factory could produce up to 50,000 cars per year.
