The Mercedes-Benz SL may have its 'Air Scarf', but the company's museum has its very own air blast, which has just been given the nod by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's strongest artificially generated tornado.
The 34.4m column of high-speed spinning air is used to remove smoke from the building in a fire by drawing it up and out. Mercedes-Benz Museum manager Michael Bock said: "This record underlines our outstanding position in the world of museums in terms of architecture."
Due to the open plan design of the museum, the architects were presented with particular problems by German fire regulations. Their answer is the tornado that spirals up the centre atrium of the building. It's generated by 144 outlets placed along the walls of the interior courtyard, which inject air into the middle of the space to create the tornado. If there is a fire, the unique tornado system works automatically to vent smoke out of the museum.
