Subaru couldn't have Mitsubishi and Nissan steal all the attention of performance fiends at the show. So to ensure its stand wasn't overlooked Subaru unveiled the STI version of the new Impreza in Tokyo. Hardly a looker, but certain to be devastatingly effective the STI's 2.5-litre boxer engine punches out 295bhp. That should be plenty to rival the Mitsubishi on the road and the special stages of the World Rally Championship. Like Mitsubishi, Subaru is keeping tight-lipped about the final performance figures, but figure on a 0-62mph time of around the five-second mark.
In keeping with the Japanese norm the STI's engine is turbocharged, its power driving through all four wheels. Bigger brakes, revised suspension and a choice of differential settings via the Driver's Control Centre Differential (DCCD) should make the STI a very impressive drivers' car. Which all makes it a shame it doesn't look a bit more special.
