Drivers who have been banned from driving in the UK will now face a cross-border disqualification in Ireland and Northern Ireland under a new agreement between the Governments. The deal, the first of its type in Europe, has been drawn up under the terms of the 1998 European Convention on driving disqualifications - which includes reckless or dangerous driving, hit-and-run driving, speeding, driving while disqualified and driving under the influence of drink or drugs.
The deal will see drivers unable to circumvent driving bans imposed in other countries. It is expected to be enforced from Spring 2010 and could pave the way for more co-operation between European countries on driving bans in a bid to reduce road casualty figures.
Transport minister Paul Clark said: "These measures will keep dangerous drivers off our roads by ensuring that disqualified drivers are not able to escape their punishment."
