With the entire car industry feeling the pressure right now, carmakers are more desperate than ever to shift their wares - making this a real buyer's market; it's a great time to be a car consumer. However, with everyone talking about the meltdown of the economy (and the polar ice caps), mpg is now just as important as bhp. So, it's natural to assume driver excitement has dropped far from the minds of the manufacturers.

Fortunately, that assumption is misplaced. Makers are performing fuel-sipping heroics these days, producing cars that are thrilling without being planet-killing.
