If you drive a four-year old car, be prepared to grind to halt at some point in the near future. A new report by reliability experts Warranty Direct says one in three cars of this age is likely to be afflicted by a failure within the next 12 months. There are around 2.2 million four-year old cars on the UK's roads, though Warranty Direct believes its estimate of 825,000 breakdowns could be conservative. Its report looked at the 10 most popular makes in the UK and found the most likely causes for breakdown with four-year old cars were the fuel system, ignition system and suspension. These are expensive faults, with an average repair bill of £318 for the fuel system, and happen just after the car has run out of manufacturer's warranty. The report also showed that owners of Audi and Mercedes cars were most likely to suffer fuel problems with a four-year old car. As a car gets older, problems with the steering, cooling system and gearbox become more prevalent. With these faults, the average repair bill is £455. |
