Whatever else you think of Renault, being slow to react to market trends isnt one of them. Realising that the market for the traditional, boxy family estate was fast disappearing down the gurgler, the French company introduced the sleek Laguna Sport Tourer range in 2001. With their Espace and Scenic variants capable of satisfying those customers who wanted to haul about a whole lot of fresh air inside, the Sport Tourer could be made to look a little more elegant. Its still one of the best-looking medium states around and has been quietly successful in the sales charts.

Finding a decent used example shouldnt be too tricky.

This car couldnt be more different to the model it replaces, the old Laguna Estate. Though spacious, that car was certainly no beauty. Moreover, the optional third row of seats it offered were largely pointless, first because they were too small for adults and second because most people wanting a seven-seat capacity usually bought an MPV instead. Its hardly surprising then, that the Laguna II marks a change of approach on this front - though not as great a change as you might think.

In the car park, the Sport Tourer has all the styling hallmarks that mark out cars like BMWs 3 Series Touring and Audis A4 Avant. Arguably, its even better looking. Where Renault has set a new standard is in being able to provide lifestyle chic with load-lugging capacity. Sure, theres less space than there was in the old model but not that much: expect to find 475 litres with all seats in use and up to 1,500 litres with the seats folded flat. Aside from this of course, its the same recipe as the Laguna II hatch: the engine choice is largely identical and theres not much of a price premium for the extra carriage space. In a medium range market thats assuming an increasingly Germanic feel, Renaults Laguna Sport Tourer arrived as something of a breath of fresh air. No chiselled edges or sombre plastics: instead, plenty of design flair and innovative thinking. Weve heard and seen this from Renault before of course. The difference is that this time, the creative approach was been matched by standards of quality far above anything the company had previously produced.

Youll pay from £5,000 for a 2001 X plated Laguna Sport Tourer 1.8 Authentique. 1.8-litre Privilege versions start at around £5,275 with the automatic versions commanding a premium of around £300.

The 2.0-litre models have proved popular and a Sport Tourer Initial, loaded to the gunwales with kit start at around £6,250 on a 2001 Y plate. Opening prices for a 3.0-litre V6 hover around £6,300.

£5,675 represents a fair starting point for negotiations on a 1.9-litre DCi Dynamique, again on the 2001 X plate. Insurance for the Laguna reflects its class leading safety provision, the 1.8-litre models starting at Group 9 and even the 3.

0-litre cars wont burn a hole in your pocket rated as they are at Group 14.

Very little goes wrong - but then the Laguna is a relatively recent design. Look for the usual signs of leggy fleet use soggy seats and suspension and a generally worn feel. The V6-engined cars can be thirsty. Theres a growing selection out there so take your time and have a look at a few.

Question the cars history as quite a few were imported via the parallel route this should give you good scope for negotiating big discounts.

(approx based on a Laguna Sport Tourer 1.8) Naturally with a range as varied as the Laguna, parts prices can vary so its probably best to check at a Renault service agents with your registration number handy. For example windscreens can be tinted, heated etc so make sure you know what youre asking for. You can expect to pay £134 for a windscreen, approximately £62 for an exchange starter motor, £120 for a headlight and around £36 for front brake pads.

The Laguna Sport Tourer feels a good deal sharper than previous generations and its a relief that Renault didnt persevere with the weedy 1.6-litre powerplant. The 1.8-litre is at best marginal, especially if youre planning on hauling a heavy load about.

The 1.9-litre dCi is well worth seeking out but the two standout powerplants are the 2.2-litre dCi diesel and the 3.0-litre V6.

In its original form the 2.2-litre dCi diesel was first offered in a Renault Espace, debuting in September 2000. The engine was subsequently adapted to generate its full quota of 150bhp and an impressive torque figure of 320Nm over a decently wide range from 1,750 to 3,200rpm. When mated to a six-speed manual gearbox this results in an average fuel consumption figure of 44.

8mpg. The Laguna has a comfortingly capacious fuel tank, which means that total range is now in the region of 670 miles. Thats London to Chamonix non-stop. On the road, flexibility is where these engines really shine.

The torque plateau is reached early in the rev range for example and unlike many rivals has some duration. In other words, you won't have to row the car along with the gear stick as you have to with some other turbo diesels. Just put your foot down and let the engine do the work. Performance is suitably lively, the hatchback version reaching 60mph in 9.6 seconds on the way to a top speed of 134mph.

The Sport Tourer is only slightly tardier, its figures being 9.8 seconds and 133mph respectively. The 3.0-litre engine is a flier, if a little thirsty, but it emits a beautiful noise and, well, do you really need any more excuses at this price?

Load lugging may not be its first priority but if you fancy a stylish hatch with extended capabilities and cant live with a stereotypical cereal box estate, Renaults Sport Tourer makes a well-rounded alternative. The diesel versions are the standout models but if you can stand the fuel bills, the 3.0-litre version has what it takes to entertain.
