Peugeot 307 SPORT SPECIAL EDITION RANGE

The Peugeot 307 Sport Special Edition Could Prove A Popular Addition To The Range. Steve Ghosley Checks It Out

Peugeot look to have been particularly clever in their creation of the 307 Sport Limited Edition that we look at here. By badging this attractive hatchback with a sporting presence without adding the expensive equipment and technology necessary to make it a true sporty hatch, they are offering customers the chance to feel and look the part, if not quite going the whole hog.

You get a good looking, well-equipped car in the Sport and prices start at £13,520 for the only petrol variant in the range - the 1.6-litre 16-valve. For those that prefer diesel power, the Sport provides a choice of three power outputs from the dependable 2.0-litre HDi engine.

These weigh in at 90bhp, 110bhp and the impressive top-of-the-range 136bhp. The prices for the diesels start at £14,420 for the 90bhp version. The 110bhp model will set you back £15,320 and the gutsy 136bhp comes in at £16,220. The 307 Sport is surprisingly only available in the five-door body style, so those who prefer three-doors will have to look elsewhere.

The 307 Sport gets all the right boxes ticked for standard equipment, including six airbags, ABS with EBD, remote central locking and variable speed power steering as well as 16-inch alloy wheels, digital air-conditioning, electric windows, front fog lights, a radio/CD-auto changer, electric folding mirrors, metallic paint, fully colour-coded exterior trim, automatic wipers and headlights. Although the 307 Sport doesnt have the technical equipment to fully justify its moniker, the added extras certainly give it the look of an urban racer and buyers can satisfy themselves that they wont incur the additional running costs usually associated with full-blown sporting hatches. For a car without real sporting credentials, this 307 makes a good fist of trying to live up to its name. The 1.

6-litre petrol engine is capable of reaching 62mph in 11.1 seconds on the way to 118mph, whilst averaging an excellent 39.2mpg. The entry-level diesel version takes a little longer, chalking up 13.

0 seconds for the same sprint and hits a top speed of 111mph. Its on the fuel consumption figures that the diesels really score and this 90bhp HDi version returns a healthy 54.3mpg. The 110bhp diesel reaches 62mph in 11.

2 seconds and has a a maximum speed of 117mph, whilst returning the best economy figure of 57.6mpg. The superb 136bhp HDi diesel is the star of the show, sprinting to 62mph in only 9.8 seconds and reaching 126mph at the top end.

It cant quite complete the full set of best figures though, but does return a very commendable 52.3mpg.

"For a car without real sporting credentials, this 307 makes a good fist of trying to live up to its name"

Having got the fundamentals right with the 307, Peugeot can now afford themselves the luxury of tinkering with the detail with special editions like this one. The sleek lines of the 307 disguise the fact that its the tallest car in the sector. Only the slightly awkward rear view betrays the Peugeots loftiness, and this helps contribute to making the 307 one of the biggest cars in its class, specifically in terms of head and legroom. Another side effect of the high roof and cab forward design is the biggest windscreen of any family hatchback.

Its a serious piece of glazing, a flush pane that soars higher than expected, giving the interior an airy feel. The latest Peugeots benefit from a greater attention to detail than previous models. Step from a 307 into a ten year-old car and apart from the claustrophobic feel, the first thing youll notice is that theres nowhere to put your take away, nowhere to store an atlas, not enough space in the glove compartment, nowhere to store anything out of sight of prying eyes and nowhere you could conceivably place a bottle. The 307 addresses all of these problems, ingeniously offering enough room in the cavernous front door bins to carry a 1.

5-litre bottle and building in lessons learnt from years of MPV production such as sliding underseat storage trays. It even features cargo nets in the hatch to stop luggage from looking like its been on a spin cycle after spirited driving. A clever feature of the 307 is a boot, which automatically locks when you pull away, protecting the contents from opportunistic thieves while stopped in traffic, and door linings that are fitted with reinforced cowlings that shield the lock elements. This Peugeot is well put together and uses a high grade of plastics, giving a subjective impression of quality to the interior.

Many will feel that the interior perhaps lacks the visual drama of the exterior styling, and its a fair point. Nevertheless, ergonomics are sound and the car will be easy on your conscience too, with over 90% of its volume by weight being recyclable or recoverable. The 307 even utilises environmentally friendly constituent parts, such as mud flaps made from what were once polypropylene bottles and soundproofing that uses recycled textiles. The Peugeot 307 Sport Special Edition is a nice idea and should find favour with those that want to look the part if not quite aspiring to full boy racer status.

The Peugeot 307 was already a very desirable hatchback. The Sport Special Edition just makes it even better value for money.
