BY ANDY ENRIGHT

Have you ever paused to wonder why the UN peacekeeping vehicles that you see in far-flung global trouble spots always seem to be Nissan Patrols? Watch any news programme and youll spot one before too long, finished in white with a big UN sign on the doors. The reason is that when an indestructible vehicle is the number one priority, the big Nissan comes up trumps every time. This durability pays dividends for those looking for a used Patrol back here on home soil. Sure, it may only be used for the school run, but its reassuring to know that after dropping the kids off at flute practice youve got a vehicle up to the job of sorting out a few sub-Saharan warlords.

Durability is a much underrated quality when it comes to choosing a big 4x4. These days buyers are often seduced instead by alloy wheels, satellite navigation or leather interiors. Virtual indestructibility has become a peripheral concern. Those who realise that a car is nothing when sitting smoking on the hard shoulder will relish the appeal of the Nissan Patrol GR.

Its one of the last overengineered vehicles out there. Dont fall into the trap of thinking the five and three-door bodies are ostensibly similar. Theyre not. The five-door Patrol GR is a significant 20 inches longer than the three-door, a point to ponder when city driving is measured into the equation.

Standard equipment on all models is generally unspectacular. Of some note however, is the Patrol GR 2.8TD SE Touring. As well as a huge name, this huge beast comes equipped with electric tilt and slide sunroof, electrically adjustable/heated seats and full leather upholstery.

The later 3.0-litre models are more refined, but youll still feel like Arnie in his Humvee. There's a huge amount of cabin space - even in the rare three-door. Fit and finish are excellent and the restyled dashboard is a model of clarity. Only the strip of wood (an exercise in Know Your Enemy) looks out of place. The long wheelbase five-door models include twin airbags, climate control and alloy wheels with the five-door adding leather upholstery, a CD autochanger, an electric sunroof, side airbags and electric, heated front seats.

The Patrol GR TD SE three-door on a 98 R plate can be yours for £8,400, or £10,000 for a similar vintage GR TD SE Touring five-door. Opt instead for a later model 3.0-litre car and you can expect to pay £14,400 for a 2000W plated 3.0Di SE+ five door, or £17,000 for a late 2001 model year 51-plated car.

Insurance for all these Patrol GR models is pegged at Group 15.

Whilst the Patrol may well be built to last, many owners try hard to test this fact. They often lead a hard life. Off road driving is a punishing activity and many Patrols will also have been used to tow caravans, boats and the like. With this in mind, check for evidence of towing equipment and test the suspension fully, as towing can seriously deteriorate the life expectancy of rear shock absorbers even on a Patrol.

Also check for evidence of fuel leaks, a sticking differential lock and corrosion around the tailgate. Inspect the exhaust, wheel arch liners, suspension and chassis and for damage caused whilst off roading and get to know the history of the vehicle in question. As a favourite tool of ram raiders in the nineties, the model was dubbed the Nissan Parole by the tabloid press. Therefore check to see if the vehicle is HPI clear and insist on service history and receipts.

If in doubt, take a specialist.

(approx based on a GR 2.8TD) A mix here between prices agreeably affordable and figures to prematurely age your bank manager. Front brake pads are around £44 and rears £40. Youll need to be trying hard off road to destroy a headlight, but the privilege will cost £132.

A new clutch and a radiator will cost in the region of £230 each, and a starter motor will be £340. Are you sitting down? A new exhaust will be around £560 and a new alternator wont see change from £600.

The Patrol GR models are a good deal more advanced than their predecessors. The 2.8-litre turbodiesel engines are torquey, if a little sibilant, and the interior fit and finish is better. As far as on-road abilities are concerned, Nissan makes much of the efforts it has made to improve refinement and handling.

Alterations to the suspension geometry for the 3.0-litre models made for a more cosseting ride and better defined handling. If you tried an old-shape Patrol, youll certainly notice that transmission noise is reduced (down by 90 per cent no less). Wind noise is down too, courtesy of a body with better aerodynamic efficiency.

On the handling front, Nissan is also keen to emphasise the merits of its clever switchable stabiliser bar. Operating on the back axle, this limits body roll at high speeds without compromising the times when you need body movement - articulation through the rough. You simply activate the system (via a dashboard button) for road use and switch it off once you leave the tarmac. The hardcore ladder-framed body construction and the three-tonne weight point to the fact that this is a heavy duty off road performer.

Powering your way through the jungle undergrowth isnt a problem and the outstanding wheel articulation helps when traversing ditches. The obligatory low range gearbox helps out when conditions get really sludgy.

The Nissan Patrol GR is a no-nonsense, heavy duty 4x4 that majors on practicality and reliability. While it may not cut a dash in the golf club car park amongst a sea of BMW X5s and Range Rovers, its good to know that the Patrol is a more sensible real world proposition. Take time, and opt for the newest possible model, as many will find the earliest car maybe a touch too Spartan. If the purposeful image and undoubted capabilities appeal, the Patrol GR wont let you down.

Should funds permit, the post 2000 3.0-litre Di models really are worth the stretch. The added refinement, improved fuel economy and improved interior styling tip the balance in favour of the newer car.
