Think of a handful of superminis that define the art of small car making. Chances are,
Peugeot's 106 will be amongst them and, if not, why not? This, after all, was the little car with big interior ideas that showed city driving could be fun. Launched in 1991, the 106 led the supermini sector for several years before new arrivals from VW,
Ford and
Fiat left it as an appealing also-ran. Peugeot wasn't having that, hence the arrival in 1996 of a heavily revised model; that was larger, sleeker, safer and faster than before. There are lots on the used market and a106 is the thinking person's small car
smart buy.
A surprisingly spacious little car that's great fun to drive. Though the 106 might be 141mm (5.5ins) shorter than its older 205 stablemate, there's almost as much room inside thanks to a long wheelbase. Careful sculpting of the side panels means there's an enormous amount of elbow space, while deep windows create a welcome airiness. Access to the rear on 3-door models is easy, thanks to wide doors which cut into the roofline. Rear passengers gain entry by flipping a catch at the base of the front seats. These slide and fold, as well as having a useful 'memory' with returns them to their original positions. Luggage space, though less in total than the 205's, is still big enough for the weekly supermarket shop. The 106 is also kinder to the environment and, say Peugeot, safer in an accident. Though from the outside, the resemblance to larger Peugeots is obvious, it's true to say that the car really has much more in common with its PSA stablemate, the
Citroen AX. The two cars are very different in character however, which is precisely as the French designers planned it.
Expect to pay from under £800 for the first of the 1.0-litre 1991 cars. Specs were confusing, but if its an XN, XN Plus, a Kid or a Mardi Gras, its an entry-level model. A more typical 1993 1.
0-litre example will set you back £1,200. Pay a premium from around £100 for 1.1-litre cars or from £300 extra for plusher XR trim. The 1.
4-litre cars start with plush XT trim from about £1,200 on 92J-plates while the first of the 1.4-litre XSis are good value at under £1,700 (later cars up to about £2,000). The 1.6-litre cars range between about £1,800 and £1,900 (94M to 96N plates).
Peugeots 1.4-litre 106 diesels are popular and range from about £1,400 for a 93K Graduate XND to £1,800 for a 94M XRD 5-door. Later first generation 1.5 diesels start on 94M plates at around £1,400 and go up to £1,900 for a 96N 5-door XTD.
Dont pay extra for special editions based on entry-level models but the Slalom and Roland Garros are worth another £100. Second generation cars (1996P to date) start at about £1,800 for a 1.1 XN or 1.5 XND, £2,000 for a 1.
4 XR or £2,200 for a 1.6 XL automatic. The GTi is under £3,100 for a 97P while the later Zest 1.1-litre range starts around £2,100 on 98R plates.
Youll also see some quite well equipped 1.4-litre Zest 3 models, also on 98R plates, from about £2,500. Diesels, all with the 1.5-litre engine, are plentiful and start from about £1,900 for a 96P XND with the later Zest priced from around £2,400 on 98R plates.
Your biggest problem will be sorting out the 106 for you from the vast range of standard models and special editions. You need to check for engine rattles (tappets and camshaft), oil leaks, slipping clutches and uneven tyre wear but there really arent any duff models in the range and all the engines are willing workers (though the 1.0 and 1.1-litre units are better suited to urban work).
Diesels are well worth considering for their outstanding fuel economy and excellent refinement (though for acceptable performance you'll want a 1.5). The 1.4-litre XSi is a great buy for the sensible enthusiast, cheap to run yet great fun.
Watch for tatty early examples showing signs of rust. Also, some of the trim materials used were a bit cheap, so could be worn or loose. Hard use may result in smoky exhausts which could indicate worn piston rings. Be particularly careful of thrashed GTIs and XSis and check for torn driveshaft gaiters and worn brake discs.
(approx based on a 97 1.1) An exhaust system is about £330. A clutch assembly will be around £95, an alternator should be close to £138 and a radiator around £85. Brake pads are about £30 front and £45 rear.
A replacement headlamp is close to £60 and a starter motor about £140.
On the road, the 106 should prove an economical driving companion. The 102mph petrol base version manages nearly 60mpg at an unrealistic constant 56mph and around 40mpg around town. The 1.4-litre diesel version is more frugal still, managing 76.
3mpg at a steady 56mph and 50mpg around town. That works out to over 750 miles between fuelling stops. If you need diesel economy but want a little extra power, then its worth looking for a later 1.5-litre diesel model.
Though its still frugal enough to achieve 76.5mpg at a constant 56mph and 51.4mpg around town, it can also make 60 in under seventeen seconds on the way to a maximum of 96mph.
If making small cars is an art and it surely is then it would appear that Peugeot have the whole thing off pat. Once upon a time, their 205 was the classic of the supermini sector; now the 106 has also passed into motoring history with that same honour. Its fun and user-friendly. If you're looking for driving satisfaction in a sensible compact package, you can do no better.
