Land Rover Discovery
When's it coming and what is it?
Another Birmingham show debutant, the new Discovery, which is taller and longer than the current car, is a handsome up-market remake of Land Rover's trusty, go-anywhere family holdall.
Why should I care?
The new Disco is going upmarket thanks to a brilliant new interior with quality similar to the new Range Rover's, and getting sporty thanks to its all-new chassis and independent suspension. As well as looking more like the sexy new Range Rover, especially from the front, the new Discovery is likely to get a smooth and potent V8 out of the Jaguar stable, as well as diesel engines. And to make sure they get the handling right, Land Rover's test drivers are honing the Discovery's handling at the famed Nurburgring race circuit, one of the toughest in Europe. That said, the Disco is unlikely to lose any of its superb off-road ability.
What makes it really special?
All-round armoury of off-road ability, sporty handling, luxury cabin and seven-seat carrying capacity. Very few 4x4s offer the same combination. This should give the Discovery the boost it needs to fend off competition from BMW, VW and Porsche.
