When's it coming and what is it?

A replacement for Mercedes entry-level hatchback will be launched late in 2004. Expect a thorough remake of the innovative city-car that retains the original's clever space-efficient design while improving some key areas.

Why should I care?

Based on the understructure of today's A-Class, the replacement will be a bit longer and a bit wider to improve cabin space and crash safety, while the styling will be updated. More significant improvements will crank up interior plastic and trim quality and the ride and handling feel of the suspension, together the current A-Class's biggest weaknesses.

What makes it really special?

UK buyers can choose from a widening selection of small cars with high roofs and roomy interiors, but none can boast a prestige badge on their nose like the A-Class's three-pointed star. If Benz can fix the current car's weaknesses, while retaining its strengths, the A-Class will finally live up to its star billing. There's even talk of a high performance variant from AMG.

I'd buy it for the mother in law.

It's a car wash-out. I'd rather walk
