BMW 1-Series
When's it coming and what is it?
BMW's challenger for the VW Golf/Audi A3/Alfa 147 will be launched in October 2004.
Why should I care?
Sporty rear-wheel drive layout will ensure fun handling, while the controversial so-called 'flame surfacing' body styling is set to make the 1-Series 2004's most talked about small car. Smooth, four-cylinder engines will be British-built with 105bhp from the 116i model and 120bhp in the 118i. A sporty 120i is tipped to make 200bhp-plus from a turbocharged 2.0-litre, but goes on sale a year later.
What makes it really special?
Buyers looking for high prestige and low cost now have a choice - BMW's core qualities of rear-wheel drive handling, sterling build quality and strong image have never before been available before in cars priced from £16,000. And like all BMW models, there will be coupe and cabriolet versions, including a motorsport-inspired M2 powered by a 240bhp four-cylinder; but that won't go on sale until 2007. If you think a Golf is too common, this could be the car for you.
