When's it coming and what is it?
Late 2004 is the best guess, because BMW is keeping its cards close to its chest. The hottest 5-Series model is the ultimate fast saloon with supercar-eating performance and a mega-sporty chassis. Think a V8 is good for performance? Well, this one's got a V10.
Why should I care?
The new M5 promises to re-write the rule book for quick saloons. Towering power will come from a specially-designed 5.0-litre V10 with a reputed 500bhp. And a V10 engines generate a highly distinctive exhaust note that should signal to the neighbours that you're in something unique. Given that the M5's 500bhp engine is between 50 and 100bhp more powerful than its very nearest rivals, it should be one of the most exhilarating drives around.
What makes it really special?
The M5 will marry sledge hammer performance to the carrying capacity of a four-door saloon. Very few cars can equal the pace of a hot Porsche while carrying four in comfort. How fast?
