Ford GT
When's it coming and what is it?
The modern re-make of Ford's classic 1960s, Le Mans winning GT40 is coming to the UK in very limited numbers - no more than a dozen or so at close to £100,000 each - in October next year. It is so exclusive that Ford will hand-pick the people who will be 'allowed' to buy one. And Jeremy Clarkson is so desperate to get on the list that he's being nice about Fords of any stripe on Top Gear. Tongue in cheek, of course.
Why should I care?
If racing means anything to you, you'll love the GT. There's the heritage of the original - when Ford failed in its mission to buy Ferrari it built a car that went out and beat Ferrari on the racetrack. And the new car really captures the spirit of the 1960s with flowing lines, race-car detailing and, courtesy of a supercharged 5.4-litre V8, performance to bother today's Ferraris, too.
What makes it really special?
The one thing that makes this car like no other is the beauty of its lines - most observers agree its even better looking than the original. Technically speaking, it is the aluminium spaceframe chassis and the centrally-mounted V8, positioned like a race car for maximum grip and high-speed handling balance. Then consider that enormously tractable supercharged V8 with 500bhp and the 180mph-plus top speed. But the looks and its heritage are what really make the GT over-the-top special.
