Our Volkswagen Golf travelled just 4.62km on a single litre of Shell fuel! Definitely one of the surprise results so far, so few guessed anywhere near.At two months' old, the Volkswagen Golf we drove was virtually brand new. It has a 1.4 litre petrol engine and had only ever been used as a hire car. It's good practice to treat a new engine very gently (known as the ‘running in period') as bearings and cylinders must wear in evenly before fuel efficiency is at an optimum level. This variable may have played a part in the outcome of the 1-Litre Challenge result.
