Though the yellow exterior of the EcoRacer concept car (shown to the world for the first time at the Tokyo Motor Show) bears no resemblance to any current Volkswagen, it is not thought to preview any forthcoming production model. Interesting as the exterior is, which can be converted from coupe, to roadster, to low-screened racer, the car's reason for being lies under the carbon fibre skin.
Note the use of carbon fibre for the distinctive bodywork. Volkswagen has gone to great lengths to reduce the car's weight in pursuit of headline grabbing figures, including a 143mph top speed, 0-62mph in 6.3 seconds and 84mpg. The engine is mounted in the middle, and you should not be surprised to hear that it is an advanced turbodiesel unit, with a modest 134bhp. Unlike most concept cars the EcoRacer is driveable and will be used as a research vehicle for allying performance and economy in future models.
