Aston Martin DBS : THE POWER AND THE GLORY

Car And Driving - British supercars come no better than Aston Martins gorgeous DBS. Jonathan Crouch checks it outBond is back and so is Aston Martin. In place of the rather cumbersome Vanquish comes the gorgeous DBS, introduced to us by 007 in Casino Royale. All right, at its heart, its no more than a development of the more affordable DB9 but its smarter, cleaner and because its lighter, significantly faster. Whats not to like? The Vanquish was the car that brought Aston Martin into a new era, courtesy of Ford ownership and money. The DBS heralds a new era too. Though developed under Ford, its future lies firmly with a consortium who promise to make Aston Martin a desirable niche sportscar maker with its own direction rather than a premium brand tied to a multi-national corporation. No more borrowed bits or restrictions on development, were promised. Perhaps that will mean Astons becoming even more exclusive. Production of DBS models will be no more than 500 units for worldwide annual sale after all. In comparison, Porsche 911s are like Fiestas. The engine bay isnt where much of the development budget for this car was spent. The Vanquishs familiar 48-valve 6.0-litre V12 still resides here, though its been enhanced with a smarter bypass system that opens at higher revs to provide additional intake air. Theres also a slightly higher compression ratio and reprofiled inlet ports, all of which, Aston claims, gives the car a bit more zip at higher revs. You wouldnt know that from looking at the bald statistics maximum power of 510bhp and torque of 420Ib ft, a step down from the figures recorded by the old Vanquish (520bhp and 425Ib ft). Yet this car is significantly faster and the reason isnt hard to find. Carbonfibre body panels (a first for Aston Martin), lighter seats and lighter brakes help to curb weight by 120kg (around 7%) over the portly Vanquish. All of which helps the DBS towards the kind of pace that sets it clearly above any car the marque has yet produced. Rest to sixty takes just over 4 seconds and rest to 100mph occupies only 9. 4s. The top speed? 191mph. The awful semi-automatic transmission of the Vanquish has been ditched for a far more satisfying 6-speed manual. The brakes are ceramic, likely to be a huge improvement on the steel discs previously used which tend to fade easily with hard track use. "This is also the first real drivers Aston we can remember for some years."The lighter weight of course has handling benefits too and this car will clearly feel more agile to owners used to the more GT-orientated set-up of its predecessor. Theres quicker steering and suspension that has been both stiffened and lowered. Despite this, the engineers have gone to a lot of trouble to ensure that the ride feels comfortable over rough surfaces. Designer Marek Reichman had to base the DBS on the existing DB9, so there were inevitably some compromises that the clean-sheet Vanquish creators didnt have to concern themselves with. Aston Martin describe this car as the culmination of the DB bloodline, designing it to bridge the gap between the more GT-focused DB9 and more track-focused Astons like the DBRS9 racer. Reichmans brief at the beginning was to lower the DB9 design by 20mm, add 20-inch wheels (for the first time on an Aston), widen the track (by 20mm at the front and 40mm at the rear) and make the whole look that bit more aggressive. Most will agree that hes succeeded. For some potential owners, the fact that the DB9s two rear child seats have been ditched will be bad news, making car unusable for the infrequent occasions when they have to step in on the school run or run friends back from the pub. No one will be surprised by the lack of luggage space however. Specially tailored Aston Martin luggage is probably a must. Build quality from this marque has come on hugely in recent years, now a match for the best Astons German rivals can offer. Expect to pay around £160,000 for this car, which sounds and is a great deal of money. However, the £180,000 that Ferrari will ask of you for a (much uglier) 599GTB is even more. Lamborghinis Murcielago at £192,000 is even more ridiculously priced, though the smaller Gallardo can be yours for £145,000. A tougher nut for the DBS to crack are cars like Porsches desirable 911 Turbo at around £98,000 or, even more affordably, Audis R8 at as little as £77,000. Both cars are effectively as fast as the DBS but lack its feeling of exclusivity. Equipment includes everything you would expect from a car like this: electric memory heated sports seats with ten-way electric adjustment, parking sensors, a trip computer, power-folding mirrors, those gorgeous 20-inch alloys, sat nav and a beautifully finished interior set off by an all-alloy centre console. Theres a very sophisticated car alarm and a Tracking device should the worst happen. The tyres are special DBS-spec Pirelli Corsa affairs (245/35 front and 295/30 rear) that you wont want to have to replace in a hurry. Following the poor reception given to the old Vanquishs semi-automatic transmission, theres no auto F1 paddle-style option. No one buys a car like this and expects it to be cheap to run. Dont expect to average better than around 20mpg even if you do a fair few motorway miles. Theres also the irritation that the fuel tank is only 78 litres or 17 gallons (compared to say, a Ferrari 599 GTBs at 105 litres) which will make the car seem even thirstier than it is. Insurance of course is up at Group 20. Better news comes in terms of depreciation. Because of the cars exclusivity, expect residual values to be as high, if not higher, than Ferraris. Servicing costs will inevitably be high, as for any supercar of this sort. Overall, you have to consider the DBS a job well done by Aston. Given that they had to base the design on that of the existing DB9, this car has a remarkably unique personality and is far more desirable at an asking price just £50,000 more. If youve just won the lottery, its a price hike worth swallowing. This is also the first real drivers Aston we can remember for some years. The V8 Vantage isnt really a great track car but this one will be much more at home on circuit days thanks to more focused handling and those fade-free ceramic brakes. Not that many DBS models will end up being thrashed in this way. Theyll signal success in the way that Astons always have. And always will.FACTS AT A GLANCE CAR: Aston Martin DBS PRICES: £160,000 on the road [est] INSURANCE GROUP: 20 CO2 EMISSIONS: 490g/km [est] PERFORMANCE: Max Speed 191mph / 0-60mph 4.1s FUEL CONSUMPTION: (average) 20mpg [est] STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front, window and side airbags, ABS, traction control, WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Heightmm 4721/1905/1280

Aston Martin Vanquish (2001 - 2007) : FORCE 12 FROM NEWPORT PAGNELL

Car And Driving - Models Covered: (2 dr coupe, 5.9 petrol [S, Ultimate Edition])BY ANDY ENRIGHTNow that the depreciation curve of earlier cars has levelled off, it seems a good time to take a closer look at the Aston Martin Vanquish. Possessed of possibly the greatest engine note of any modern car, the Vanquish looks an intriguing bit of business for little more than new BMW M3 money. The Vanquish in many ways represents Aston Martin in transition, dragging itself from an era of appealing but rather parochial powerhouses into an altogether more modern era. As such, there are parts of the car that seem resolutely modern whilst other aspects seem rooted in the past, making it possibly the most interesting Aston Martin road car in recent years. Its also one of the most exciting, and with used values now looking distinctly tempting, its worth further investigation.Every body panel is sleek, and is constructed from aluminium with each individual panel hand-tailored to the central structure to ensure a perfect fit. The main structure itself is formed from extruded aluminium sections which are bonded and riveted around a central transmission tunnel made of carbon fibre. One-piece composite sidewalls and carbon-fibre windscreen pillars are also bonded to the central structure to form the safety cell. It all sounds more like Williams Formula One than clubby old Aston Martin and is an indicator of the investment parent company Ford sunk into the once-quaint British firm. Despite the attention paid to the chassis, its only fitting that the engine should receive some fettling too. Developments to the old DB7 Vantages 48-valve 6.0-litre V12 engine generated a 7% increase in power and a 2.5% increase in torque. The interior of the car features superbly crafted Connolly leather seats jarring with some obvious Ford parts bin minor controls and some weak plastics masquerading as aluminium. Its possible to specify the car as a 2+2 or a two seater with additional boot space. The S can be identified by an aerodynamic splitter to help high speed stability and a revision to the grille for better cooling. The bootlid was changed at the back with a high-mounted brake light fitted but otherwise the car is unmistakeably a Vanquish, those huge rear haunches and gaping maw at the front giving it a much bigger rear view mirror intimidation factor than the sleek DB9. Prices start at just over £60,000 for the first of the 450bhp 2001 model year Y-registration cars. The great thing about older Vanquishes is that they dont differ that much in styling from later ones and, as such, look very good value. The S model opens at £96,000 which is still serious money for this vehicle. These prices include the necessary metallic paint, Tracker and premium audio system. If an owner has skimped on these, chances are theyll have cut costs elsewhere. An Aston Martin Works Service conversion to manual gearchange can tack up to £10,000 onto a used valuation. When you get into the Vanquish, listen for a whine when you open the door to signify that the gearbox is air charging correctly. The engine should fire cleanly from cold and when selecting first gear on the paddle shift, the gear should engage with a light thunk before pulling away cleanly. Any juddering or hesitating to select gear suggests a shot clutch or faulty gearbox software. One trick that Aston Works Service let some owners in on was a reset mode for the software that learns individual driver styles. Effectively you hold both paddles in a sequence with your foot on the brake and the system then takes 30 seconds to relearn the gearshifts relation with the clutch bite point, making changes a good deal quicker and less clunky.(approx based on a 2005 Vanquish S) Most services will cost around £1,500 although there is quite some variance in pricing charged between key dealers so itll pay to phone around. Rear tyres run to around £700 a pair so dont get too happy with the right boot at the lights. Panel damage is extremely expensive to repair so look for clean panels and unkerbed rims.Whilst its rare to encounter anybody who felt the old V12 Vantage was somewhat under-endowed in the power department, the 450bhp boasted by the Vanquish seemed more than enough at launch but rivals soon overtook it. More suitable is the 520bhp boasted by the Vanquish S that sits at the top of the Aston Martin hierarchy. Even 450bhp will propel the 1820kg Aston from rest to 60 in under 4.5 seconds before reaching a maximum speed in excess of 190mph a velocity theoretically capable of covering London to Glasgow in 100 minutes. Do not try this, however. You will probably find Her Majestys Pleasure far less accommodating than the cockpit of the Vanquish. If these figures sound familiar, its because the Ferrari 550 Maranello was the vehicle Aston Martins engineers used as a key benchmark throughout the development of the Vanquish. Indeed the 550 was completely stripped to its component parts in order to understand what made it such a relentlessly excellent product. The Aston Martin Vanquish might no longer be at the cutting edge of supercar development but most prospective owners wont care. Where more modern rivals are increasingly sanitised and nannying, the Vanquish remains something rather feral and thrilling and with early examples costing little more than a decently specified BMW M3, seem to offer a lot of metal for your money. Buy very carefully and dont choose the cheapest car you see. Steer clear of damage repaired cars as the Vanquish is notoriously difficult to return to 100% after a prang.
