Chrysler Sebring : BRING THE CHANGES

Car And Driving - Targeting a niche market, Chryslers Sebring offers a welcome dash of individuality in a sector dominated by familiar faces. Andy Enright assesses its chancesIn recent years, the majority of sales in the premium medium Range and executive class saloon sectors have gone to German marques. Chryslers Sebring, the car we look at here, isnt going to change that but it will bring a welcome element of variety to a corner of the market that was becoming rather predictable.Mind you, itll have its work cut out in doing so, thats for sure. In the £18,000-£20,000 sector, it must do battle with upper spec versions of cars like the Ford Mondeo, Volkswagen Passat and Honda Accord and entry-level variants of premium contenders like BMWs 3 Series and Audis A4. Still, campaigning on exclusivity, the eternal cop-out thats the worst sort of doublespeak for miserable sales figures, neednt be this cars last refuge: it looks to deserve a whole lot more than that. Prices start from £17,995. So lets take a look at what Chrysler have fronted up with. The Sebring name isnt particularly well known in the UK, just a few of the old Sebring cabriolets having been sold in recent years, but the badge has a little more heritage in the US, where it has adorned Chryslers since 1995. It refers to the venue in Florida for a renowned 12hr sports car race think of it as a mini US version of Le Mans: theres proof, if ever it were needed, that things arent always bigger in the US. The Chrysler Sebring has found more than a worthy niche down the years, the drop-top versions of the first two generations of Sebring being the biggest selling convertible cars in the world from 2001 to 2005, even outselling the Mazda MX-5 with over 40,000 cars produced per year. Most went to the domestic market in the US but this time round Chrysler have broader ambitions."The Sebring is an intriguing car and one removed from the countless bland Euroboxes that populate the market"This generation Sebring features a chassis shared with Mitsubishi which already underpins the Dodge Caliber and the Mitsubishi Outlander, amongst others. Its a good-looking car although lacking the sort of in-your-face impact of its bigger brother, the 300C. It represents the first time that Chrysler has tried to penetrate this market with a right-hand drive car and is also the first time that Chrysler has fitted a diesel engine in a car in this sector. Although the company might be feeling its way a little, first impressions are good. The engine line up encompasses three powerplants, starting with a 154bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine with dual variable valve timing good for 36.2mpg. A more powerful option is the 167bhp 2. 4 petrol unit that compensates British buyers for the lack of the V6 petrol engine offered in other markets. Of more relevance to European buyers is that 138bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine shared with the Caliber. This is probably the version to go for. Not only do you get 45.6mpg combined fuel consumption but theres a level of torque (229 lb ft) that hambles even the 2.4-litre petrol model (162 lb ft). The diesel and the 2. 4-litre petrol both cost £18,995, with the 2.4 offered in automatic form only (the only variant with an auto box). Whichever model you go for, only one plush trim level Limited is being offered. It includes everything from a cutting-edge information, entertainment and communication navigation audio system with a 20Gb hard drive to a heated and cooled front cupholder for keeping hot beverages hot and cool beverages cool. Air conditioning, air filtering, heated leather-trimmed seats and a long list of safety systems including ESP and side-curtain airbags are all fitted as standard. The cabin of the Sebring isnt going to give Audi any sleepless nights but by previously low US standards, its a decent effort. The clocks are softy lit in blue, while the infotainment system on the centre console will be familiar to anyone who has driven a modern Mercedes. Metallic coloured plastics dominate the centre console while the cowled dials, four-spoke sports steering wheel and two-tone trim on the doors act as small design signatures that lift the fascia above the mundane. One of the most interesting features is the information, entertainment and communication navigation radio. This navigation radio features a 165mm (6.5 in) Thin Film Transistor (TFT) display with a touch-screen panel that can support 65,000 colours. The system provides a two- or three-dimensional appearance to graphics and animation, as well as multiple font sizes and styles. The system can follow voice-activated commands, provides real-time traffic updates and incorporates many new features for music, sound, movies and personalized picture displays, including and heres the most interesting part - a 20-gigabyte hard disc drive for storing map data for the navigation system and photos and a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port that allows for the transfer of photos onto the hard drive. Youll even be able to view the pictures you just shot on your digital camera in your car. With a long list of safety features and some fascinating technical details, the Sebring deserves to appeal to more people than the gratuitously contrarian. If it breaks up the stranglehold of the mainstream marques, our automotive environment will be a richer place for it.
Chrysler Voyager CRD Turbo Diesel Range : PRACTICAL PEOPLE POWER

Car And Driving - Chryslers Voyager MPV Works Best With Turbo Diesel Power. Jonathan Crouch Explains WhySensible. Thats what you are if you buy into a people carrying MPV, a car like Chryslers Voyager. After all, in a vehicle of this kind, youve a car with a footprint little bigger than an ordinary estate, yet a car that can accommodate nearly twice as many people. Youve a car with more carrying capacity than a small van, yet a car that should be as easy to manoeuvre as a family hatch. And youve a car that can be specified with a diesel engine as cheap to run as any decently sized shopping runabout. Sensible, as we said. Which is why, in considering Chryslers Voyager, youre probably not going to give a second thought to the petrol-engined option - a 150bhp 2.4-litre four cylinder unit. This (like the 3.3-litre engine now deleted from the Grand Voyager Range) is primarily for the US market. European family buyers are understandably reluctant to incur the running costs that come with a car which will average little more than 23mpg. Which is why the most significant part of this latest model lies in its 2.5 and 2.8-litre CRD turbodiesel engines. "If you want space, value and a luxurious long distance environment, its right up your street."Older Voyager diesels havent traditionally been MPVs of choice in this sector, noisy, slow and not particularly economical. The 2.5-litre common rail CRD unit introduced a few years ago was much better and the more recent 2.8-litre CRD unit on offer alongside it is a bigger improvement still. Whereas the boost in outright power over the 2.5-litre car isnt enormous, the gain in torque means far greater capability. With 266lb/ft of torque available, the 2.8 CRD has way more pulling power than the old 3. 3-litre V6 petrol Grand Voyager! With this amount of sheer lugging intensity, the 2.8 CRD can tow 3.5 tonnes, making it an ideal vehicle for those who want to tow serious caravans, boats or other large trailers. The only real problem with the 2. 8 is the cost, since Chryslers rather odd pricing and trim structure means that to upgrade to the 2.8-litre CRD engine in the Voyager line-up means a hefty hop up of around £4,000. Prices for the 2.5 CRD start from £19,990, while the 2. 8 (offered in automatic form only) costs from £23,955. Go for the stretched Grand Voyager and you only get the choice of 2.8-litre power at prices starting from £25,995. Both CRD units feature all the latest industry buzzwords: common rail, 16 valves, twin overhead camshafts and twin balancer shafts. As a result, theyre both far quieter than you might expect and have far more acceptable levels of performance (0-60mph in 13.5s on the way to 115mph for the 2.5). Fuel consumptions good too: you should average around 35mpg, with over 40mpg perfectly possible on longer trips. In fact, the only real drawback is pulling power. Dont get us wrong theres plenty of it: even in the 2.5, theres some 230Ib ft, which again is more than the old 3.3-litre V6. The problem is the relatively narrow rev Range over which its developed which necessitates over-frequent use of the baulky manual gearbox. All of which makes the automatic gearbox offered in the 2.8 a welcome boon. The latest versions feature some useful improvements. The exterior has been freshened up a little, retaining the Chrysler family look but adopting a revised grille and shapely projector headlights. There are also body side mouldings, a more attractive wheel trim design and, for plusher models, a wider Range of alloy wheel designs. Inside the fascia has been revised too. Safety-wise, there are now side curtain airbags that cover all three rows of seats. Its always been something of a personal bugbear that manufacturers will jump onto a bandwagon and offer a seven seat vehicle without going the extra mile to offer seven seat safety features. Imagine the guilt youd feel if a child suffered a head injury whilst travelling in the rearmost row of seats. Chrysler should be lauded in offering what is still a very rare feature. Despite the willing nature of the latest diesel engines, this is still not a car to reward enthusiastic drivers in the mould of a Galaxy/Sharan/Alhambra. The presence of rather antiquated leaf-sprung rear suspension might warn you of that before you even set out. But then, driving satisfaction is pretty low down on the priority list for potential buyers of cars like these. More important is ride quality, an area in which the Voyager shines, ironing out potholes and undulations with aplomb. As a result, there is no other car in the class better at cosseting you over long journeys. Another thing you should notice over the bumps is the general lack of shudder and vibration, courtesy of a 20% increase in torsional stiffness. As a result, theres great body control which means that piloting a Voyager around country roads makes you feel less like youre at the helm of a bus. The main reason for all that extra stiffness of course was to sort out some of the safety issues that tripped up the old car. These have been duly addressed though at the cost of a lot of extra weight. Inside, its much as before: this is still the largest MPV in its class. In standard form, you get two individual seats in the middle which flip forward for easy access to the foldaway three person bench at the rear (which can be swapped for two individual seats). As usual, all the seats can be removed or folded into makeshift tables but they dont slide back and forth (a la Espace) to increase either centre legroom or rear luggage space. Chrysler has missed a trick here. The short wheelbase model offers 450 litres of storage space behind the rear third row of seats or, if that isnt enough, the long wheelbase Grand Voyager version has 671 litres, as well as 150mm more cabin space. Take all but the front seats out and the capacity rises to a vast 4880 litres - almost enough to move house with. Nice touches include optional electric operation for the sliding side doors and tailgate which would be a real boon in the supermarket carpark with your hands are full of shopping. Another extra worth having is the optional cargo organiser for the boot, which neatly divides the space into three separate cargo bays. For stowing smaller items, theres a removable central storage box, which slots into place between either of the front two rows of seats. The three-zone air conditionings neat too, with the temperature for rear seat occupants controlled by a panel in the roof lining. As youd expect, cup holders are everywhere and the multi-speaker Infiniti stereo system is brilliant. In summary, if youre thinking Voyager, you now need to think diesel. As a package for those MPV customers in search of space, value and a luxurious long distance environment, this one could be right up your street. In fact, an example probably will be some time soon.FACTS AT A GLANCE CAR: Chrysler Voyager / Grand Voyager turbo diesel Range PRICES: £19,990-£31,995 - on the road INSURANCE GROUPS: 14-15 CO2 EMISSIONS: 210-225g/km PERFORMANCE: [2.5 CRD] Max Speed 115mph / 0-60mph 13.5s FUEL CONSUMPTION: [2.5 CRD] (urban) 29.1mpg / (extra urban) 43.5mpg / (combined) 36.7mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin Front airbags / ABS WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: [Grand Voyager] Length/Width/Height 5094/1997/1748mm

Chrysler Voyager SE Touring : VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY

Car And Driving - When it comes to global domination in the people carrier market, Chryslers Voyager has things taped. The latest SE Touring model offers a competitive value proposition for us more reticent Brits. Andy Enright reportsAsk most people about Chrysler in the UK and the answers youll get will depend very much upon the age of the respondent. The younger generation will probably mention the Viper supercar while older customers still recall Petula Clark imploring us to put a Chrysler Sunbeam in our lives. Few will mention the Voyager, the car that really put the company on the map. In its latest guise with the SE Touring trim level, Chrysler hopes the Voyager can build its profile a little higher. Its stRange that the Voyager should slip from the shortlists of many buyers, preferring instead to opt for an Espace or a Galaxy and Chrysler must be similarly puzzled at the Voyagers low-key image. After all, the two Brits who arguably command most column inches Tony Blair and David Beckham have both been Voyager owners. Product placement doesnt get a lot more prominent than that. For those of us who cant stretch to bulletproof exteriors with anti-kidnap oxygen supplies and plasma screen DVD systems, Chrysler have produced something a little more tailored to the cut of our cloth. The Voyager SE Touring edition offers compelling value from less than £21,000. Only one version is now available, a £20,490 2.5-litre CRD diesel. Its finished with a few luxury features that many MPV owners wont expect to find at this kind of price level. Sixteen-inch alloy wheels punch up the exterior appearance as do the black side mouldings. A ten-speaker 360-watt Infinity CD stereo system, with audio controls incorporated into the leather-trimmed steering wheel is also fitted as standard, as are rear parking sensors. All of which leaves the highlight of the vehicle as far as any self respecting eight-year-old will be concerned - a DVD entertainment system. This package alone is unlikely to grant Chrysler the vast slew of conquest customers from Ford and Renault it genuinely covets. Part of Chryslers quandary is that as a result of all the celebrity product placement, much of the car-buying public perceives the Voyager as a very expensive premium product. In reality, it competes head to head on price with less prestigious fare."The two Brits who arguably command most column inches Tony Blair and David Beckham have both been Voyager owners "The 2.5-litre common rail diesel engine offers ain impressive 36.7mpg average fuel consumption figure, meaning that with low depreciation and strong CO2 emissions, the 141bhp CRD makes a powerful case for itself straight off the bat. Its also enjoyable to drive, with a CV featuring many of the current industry buzz words: common rail, 16 valves, twin overhead camshafts and twin balancer shafts. As a result, its far quieter than Chrysler diesel engines of yore and has far more acceptable levels of performance (0-60mph in 13.5s on the way to 115mph). Although there is plenty of torque available, the Range where that torque figure is developed is quite peaky and youll need to make use of the gearstick for rapid progress. As a versatile motorway tool, however, the Voyager Touring CRD has few peers. Inside, its business as usual. You get two individual seats in the middle that flip forward for easy access to the foldaway three-person bench at the rear (which can be swapped for two individual seats). As usual, all the seats can be removed or folded into makeshift tables but they dont slide back and forth to increase either centre legroom or rear luggage space. If you want the full gambit of seating acrobatics, youll need to look at the larger Grand Voyager with its clever Stow N Go system. The Voyager offers 450 litres of storage space behind the rear third row of seats. Take all but the front seats out and the capacity rises to a vast 4,880 litres - almost enough to move house with. Nice touches include optional electric operation for the sliding side doors and tailgate which would be a real boon in the supermarket car park with your hands are full of shopping. There are also body side mouldings, a more attractive wheel trim design and, for plusher models, a wider Range of alloy wheel designs. Inside the fascia has been revised too. The Voyager SE Touring will have its work cut out attracting hordes of new buyers but if youre in the market for a quality full-sized MPV, it should be on your shortlist.
Chrysler Grand Voyager Stow N Go Range : SAFE CRACKER

Car And Driving - With extra emphasis on safety and efficiency, the latest Grand Voyager models have a clever Stow N Go seating system. Andy Enright reportsIf youve ever owned a large MPV People Carrier, then youll know that removing the seats is, quite literally, a painful process. Its all very well having removal van-style space in theory but if to get at it, you have to break your back humping heavy seats around, then the extra potential room is not of much real benefit. And thats assuming youve got somewhere to store the darn things when youre not using them. At last however, one manufacturer, Chrysler, has come up with a solution to this continual large MPV problem. Its called Stow N Go and its a unique seating system that allows the seats in the companys Grand Voyager MPV to be folded flat into the floor in less than 30 seconds. Stow n Go seating allows the second and third-row seats to be folded into, and uniquely not onto, the floor. Folding the seats involves a virtually effortless one-hand operation without the need for the head restraints to be removed. With both the second- and third-row seats folded, the Chrysler Grand Voyager has a completely flat load floor and a maximum cargo volume of 4690 litres (165.6 cu. ft). With the second and third row seats upright, spacious, covered storage bins are available providing a total of 340 litres (12 cu.ft) of extra under-floor storage space. The models rear three-seat bench also now offers a 60/40 split, and as the seats fold into covered storage bins, owners will not have to worry about damaging seat backs once they have been folded. Sounds sensible doesnt it, but you dont really get much idea of how efficiently this all works on paper. You have to try it, preferably with the family in tow. Mind you, with Grand Voyager prices ranging from £25,995 (you cant have Stow N Go on ordinary Voyager models), it will have to be a pretty well-heeled family. Stow N Go is yet another in a whole series of improvements that Chrysler have brought to the Voyager in recent times. Many of these have focused upon safety, for the first generation model didnt enjoy a stellar reputation in this respect."With Stow N Go to charm customers in the showroom, Chrysler looks to be better set in the large MPV market than many of its rivals.."The latest versions not only offer excellent safety provision but also address a number of other issues. The exterior has been freshened up a little, retaining the Chrysler family look but adopting a revised grille and shapely projector headlights. There are also body side mouldings, a more attractive wheel trim design and, for plusher models, a wider Range of alloy wheel designs. Inside the fascia has been revised and there are now side curtain airbags that cover all three rows of seats. The only engine choice is now the gutsy 2. 8-litre CRD unit familiar to Jeep Cherokee drivers. With 266lb/ft of torque available, the 2.8 CRD has way more pulling power than the old 3.3-litre V6 petrol car. With this amount of sheer lugging intensity, the 2.8 CRD can tow 3.5 tonnes, making it an ideal vehicle for those who want to tow serious caravans, boats or other large trailers. You could even go on a family holiday and put a Lotus Elise on a solid towing bar for a little fun! Trim options in the standard line-up consist of LX, Executive and luxury Executive XS derivatives. A four speed automatic gearbox is offered as standard. Despite the strong engine on offer, dont get the idea that the Grand Voyager is a thrilling steer. It was never an MPV that had a remotely sporting bias and the presence of rather antiquated leaf-sprung rear suspension might warn you of that before you even set out. But then, driving satisfaction is pretty low down on the priority list for potential buyers of cars like these. Over bumps and ruts youll notice a general lack of shudder and vibration, courtesy of a 20% increase in torsional stiffness. This is brought about as a by-product of making the structure more crashworthy, though at the cost of a lot of extra weight. Inside, its much as before: this is still the largest MPV in its class. Nice touches include optional electric operation for the sliding side doors and tailgate which would be a real boon in the supermarket car park with your hands are full of shopping. Another extra worth having is the optional cargo organiser for the boot, which neatly divides the space into three separate cargo bays. These days a car manufacturer cannot hope to succeed selling family friendly vehicles without some clever touches and a serious commitment to safety. With this sorted and Stow N Go to charm customers in the showroom, Chrysler looks to be better set in the large MPV market than many of its rivals.FACTS AT A GLANCE CAR: Chrysler Grand Voyager Range PRICES: £25,995-£31,995 - on the road INSURANCE GROUPS: 15-16 CO2 EMISSIONS: 225g/km PERFORMANCE: Max Speed 112mph / 0-60mph 12.0s FUEL CONSUMPTION: (combined) 29mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin Front, side and curtain airbags / ABS WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Height 5094/1997/1748mm

Chrysler Grand Voyager Signature CRD : SIGN OF THE TIMES

Car And Driving - Large families have rarely needed much additional incentive to look at the Grand Voyager but Chrysler is adding a little extra persuasion with the Signature CRD diesel edition. Andy Enright reportsThe Americans would have us believe that theres no substitute for cubes. When they coined that expression, they were talking about engine capacity but advances in powerplant technology have given small engines the characteristics of big old units. These days, the term is more applicable to space inside our family cars. If youve got a big family, theres no getting around the fact that youre going to need a lot of space to haul them and their gear. Step forward the Chrysler Grand Voyager, at its most appealing in Signature edition guise.Lets get one thing clear from the outset. This is a prime piece of automotive real estate. At £29,185, its a long way removed from the lowest common denominator MPVs that offer a big box and little else. The Signature model features a generous amount of standard equipment including an overhead rail system with sliding storage boxes, two-tone leather trimmed seats, a rear seat DVD system, rear park assist, driver and front passenger airbags, side curtain airbags for all three rows, a powered tailgate and powered sliding side doors. The side curtain airbags that cover all three rows of seats are a key safety feature and one shared by a surprisingly small proportion of full-sized MPVs. Chrysler should be lauded in offering what is still, rather unforgivably, not a frequent fitment. "`The Grand Voyager remains the big daddy of full-sized MPVs"The engine that does the work up front is a tough 150bhp 2.8-litre CRD unit familiar to Jeep Cherokee drivers. With 359Nm of torque available, the 2.8 CRD has way more pulling power than the 3. 3-litre V6 petrol car. With this amount of sheer lugging intensity, the 2.8 CRD can tow 3.5 tonnes, making it an ideal vehicle for those who want to tow serious caravans, boats or other large trailers. A four-speed automatic gearbox is offered as standard with this Signature 2.8-litre CRD edition One area where Chrysler is ahead of much of the opposition is when it comes to flexibility. It seems that many car makers employ their finest brains when it comes to maximising the space and versatility in their mini-MPVs only to suddenly get rather lazy when it comes to the full-sized models where every last millimetre isnt at quite such a premium. Chrysler isnt one of them. After all, whats the point of having removal van-style space in theory if, to get at it, you have to break your back humping heavy seats around? And thats assuming youve got somewhere to store the things when youre not using them. Chrysler has come up with a solution to this perennial large MPV problem. Its called Stow N Go and its a seating system whereby the seats in the Grand Voyager fold flat into the floor in less than 30 seconds. Stow n Go seating allows the second and third-row seats to be folded into, and uniquely not onto, the floor. Folding the seats involves a virtually effortless one-hand operation without the need for the head restraints to be removed. With both the second and third-row seats folded, the Chrysler Grand Voyager has a completely flat load floor and a maximum cargo volume of 4,690 litres. With the second and third row seats upright, spacious covered storage bins are available - providing a total of 340 litres of extra under-floor storage space. The models rear three-seat bench also offers a 60/40 split, and as the seats fold into covered storage bins, owners will not have to worry about damaging seat backs once they have been folded. Sounds sensible doesnt it, but you dont really get much idea of how efficiently this all works on paper. You have to try it, preferably with the family in tow. Despite the strong engine, dont get the idea that the Grand Voyager is a thrilling steer. This additional bulk is one reason why even with all that torque on tap, the Grand Voyager fails to feel that rapid. Inside, its much as youd expect if youve ever climbed aboard a Grand Voyager. You might need a map because this is still the largest MPV in its class. Nice touches include optional electric operation for the sliding side doors and tailgate which would be a real boon in the supermarket car park with your hands are full of shopping. Another extra worth having is the optional cargo organiser for the boot, which neatly divides the space into three separate load bays. The Grand Voyager will never be a common sight by dint of the fact that its possibly the most luxurious MPV on sale. This Signature model sweetens the value proposition a little but it remains a vehicle for those who appreciate attention to detail and arent afraid to pay for it. The superiority complex comes as standard. Perhaps the Americans are onto something after all.
