Chrysler Grand Voyager 25TH Anniversary Edition : ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES

Car And Driving - It's 25 years since Chrysler invented the MPV and you can join the celebrations by buying a Grand Voyager 25th Anniversary edition. Steve Walker reports.MPVs are everywhere these days, large and small, hosting five, six, seven, eight or even nine seats, but in 1983, they weren't. Back in the early 80s, the idea of a vehicle devoted to family life had yet to catch on and car buyers seeking extra space and utility were forced to consider conventional estate cars. Then some bright spark at Chrysler had a eureka moment - probably while primping his bubble perm and watching Dallas on TV. By November 2nd 1983, that flicker of inspiration had come to fruition and the world's first MPV was rolling off the production line in Canada. To celebrate 25 years since Chrysler's origination of the MPV concept, it's launched a special edition version of today's Grand Voyager. The Grand Voyager has come a long way since the early 80s when its ancestors amounted to little more than vans with seats installed and some additional glasswork. Modern MPVs have evolved to offer seats that fold, flip, swivel and come out completely to create multifarious interior combinations designed to solve any passenger-carrying conundrum. The Grand remains one of the top choices in the market for large MPVs and with family buyers never averse to a spot of added value, this 25th Anniversary edition should only increase its profile. The only engine available with the 25th Anniversary Grand Voyager is the one that accounts for the majority of sales anyway. The 2.8-litre CRD diesel has proven a real winner for Chrysler and has been rolled out across a number of vehicles. It's not the most refined unit of its ilk but it's big-hearted and good to drive. Visibility out of the Grand Voyager is one of the best in class with big mirrors, short overhangs and narrow pillars. You'd have to say that the Grand Voyager drives like the big American MPV that it is, so it's not the kind of car you'd chuck about the lanes. To be fair, it doesn't lean as much as you'd expect through the bends. This roll stiffness makes the steering quite precise, and the Grand Voyager can be hustled through twists with more vigour than you'd think. It's certainly comfortable on the straights and so long as you take things easy, will be more than adequate for family use."Chrysler invented the MPV 25 years ago and would quite like to remind everyone of that fact"MPVs stand or fall on their practicality. There have been any number of attempts by manufacturers to hoodwink the buying public with `family' cars that fall short on interior space and they invariably fail. Take a look at the sales charts for this sort of car and it's clear that size sells and on that basis, the Grand Voyager is off to a very promising start. It is seriously big, seating seven with ease and featuring the Stow `n Go seating system which means that the vehicle can be transformed from a seven seater to a two seater in less than 30 seconds. Because all of the seats store in the floor, it's not as if you'll need to clutter your garage up with them either. This generation Grand Voyager is bluffer and squarer looking than its rounded predecessor but looks a little more distinguished for it, distancing itself from the midsized sports-orientated vehicles like the Ford S-MAX and the Mitsubishi Grandis. It's not the most distinctive piece of styling but it caters to a buyer that wants the best without drawing attention to that fact. The Grand Voyager comes well equipped in standard form but Chrysler seems intent on celebrating its 25th Anniversary in style and this special edition model comes fully loaded. There's leather upholstery, a satellite navigation system and voice recognition functionality but the piece de résistance as far as the kids will be concerned is the dual screen DVD entertainment system. All that hassle trying to get your offspring into the car will be come a distant memory but now you won't be able to get them out. The 25th Anniversary edition underlines its generous internal specification with some nice external upgrades too. There are Xenon headlights featuring LED daytime running lights and the grille is picked out in chrome mesh. Buyers even get a commemorative engraved keyring. Only 100 of these Grand Voyagers are being made available in the UK and the price actually undercuts the Limited model from the standard range by £1,000. The Grand Voyager is a big car but its big diesel engine does a commendable job of moving it around. Surely it would be too much to expect sparkling running costs as well, wouldn't it? How you view the fuel economy of the car depends on your perspective. 30mpg is nothing special in this day and age but when you consider the Grand's seven-seat capacity and all-round space. It's not too bad. Whether the Grand makes sense will depend greatly on how regularly you'll use its full capacity. Depreciation is an area where the Grand Voyager is going to do reasonably well. It's helped in this regard by upfront pricing that looks very reasonable and by the fact the Grand Voyagers have traditionally been bought by individuals who have come to recognise that viable alternatives are few. Only the Renault Grand Espace and the various converted vans on the market can rival the Grand Voyager's interior space. As a compromise between the Renault's style and the internal acreage of the van conversions, the Grand Voyager has found itself in particular demand. Chrysler invented the MPV 25 years ago and would quite like to remind everyone of that fact. As vehicle concepts go, it's certain to have far more longevity than the off-road coupe or the convertible pick-up so we can forgive a little self indulgence on the American marque's part. The Grand Voyager 25th Anniversary edition is limited to 100 units in the UK so it has exclusivity and there's loads of equipment too.Facts At A Glance CAR: Chrysler Grand Voyager 25th Anniversary PRICE: £32,600 - on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 11E CO2 EMISSIONS: 302g/km PERFORMANCE: Max Speed 115mph / 0-60mph 12.8s FUEL CONSUMPTION: (urban) 22.1mpg / (extra urban) 38.7mpg / (combined) 30.4mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin Front, side and curtain airbags / ABS WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Height 5143/1953/1816mm

Chrysler 300C : AMERICAN ATTITUDE

Car And Driving - The Chrysler 300C isn't shy of attitude but is there more to this car than that? Jonathan Crouch finds outBig, relatively inexpensive and extremely endearing, the Chrysler 300C demonstrates that buying a big car doesn't mean having to go mainstream. Available in both saloon and estate guises, the 300C still looks as unique as the day it was launched and the availability of a 6.1-litre SRT-8 model only adds to its appeal.Chrysler's 300C is a car that has made a surprisingly large impact in the UK executive sector. Though this is normally a part of the market dominated by German brands, a significant number of buyers have found the big Chrysler's sheer value and on-road presence a beguiling prospect. You can see why. Get one of these flashing in your rear view mirror and you'd move over double quick. In 2008, the car was updated but its basic appeal remains the same. There's just something about the 300C that makes it special. At 5015mm long, this is a substantial hunk of automotive real estate, so it's just as well that rear parking sensors come as standard. But who would drive a car like this? On the exterior it's about as flamboyant as a four door saloon car gets but under that bonnet, or perhaps I should say hood, lies one of the most eminently sensible diesel engines around. It's also one of the best engines around too. Generating 215bhp, it'll haul the big Chrysler to 60mph in 7.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 143mph, plus there's a rear wheel drive set-up that will please enthusiasts. Thanks to that massive 510Nm of torque, it doesn't feel significantly slower than the 6.1-litre `Hemi' petrol V8 when you're up and rolling. Perhaps the most telling fact about the muscle power of this car is the fact that it hails from Graz in Austria, rather like one Arnold Schwarzenegger."Living larger than life certainly has something to be said for it…."Even with that amount of torque, 1,928kg of car takes some shifting but the engine never sounds strained or harsh. The direct injection unit is very linear in its power delivery and the turbocharger gets going from very low engine speeds. This means that even while trickling about town, letting the engine and gearbox do all the work for you, you'll still return reasonable fuel consumption figures. If you really do want the full-on 300C experience, you'll need eight cylinders under the bonnet and for that you need the SRT-8. Packing a serious 425bhp wallop, the sports flagship gets to 60mph in 5 seconds and tops out at 168mph. Chrysler's 300C really shook the executive market up at its launch with its high waistline, low roofline, squat shoulders and bulldog face all offering brutal, unmissable presence. It still has all those things, though in 2008 the car was improved with a few well judged nips and tweaks. Outside, there are changes to the rear fascia and rear light clusters. The rear saloon boot lid is also restyled and now incorporates an integrated spoiler and high-mounted stop light. Inside, there's a fresh instrument panel and centre console design, highlighted with satin silver bezels. Soft touch surfaces on arm rests and door panels and a darker interior colour offers more of the kind of feel you'd get in a prestigious German alternative. Other changes include an ignition key with one-touch start-up, a fully adjustable steering wheel and LED lighting that extends to the front cup holders and front and rear door pockets. In addition, seat-mounted airbags have been added to the front and side-curtain airbags to the rear (where there's still the most legroom in the class). With the rear seats in place, the 300C Touring model's load area holds 630 litres of cargo, compared with this saloon's 504 litres. With the rear seats folded down in the Touring version, cargo capacity rises to a monstrous 1,602 litres. In case you're wondering, that's better than established class benchmarks like the Audi A6 Avant and Saab 9-5 Estate can manage. A rear cargo organiser and cargo cover are also included to keep luggage safe and sound. Even so, if it was me signing the cheque, I think I might go for this saloon variant. It has a deep, broad boot that many might find more sensible than the Tourer's shallower, less regularly shaped space. Most 300C models retail in the £28,000 to £34,000 bracket but you'll need just over £40,000 if you want the SRT-8 version. These are prices comparable with more conservative and less well equipped rivals like BMW's 5 Series or Audi's A6. The mainstream 300C range is based around the 3.0 V6 CRD diesel engine but with this unit, you can get the look and feel of the top SRT-8 variant if you opt for the SRT-Design model, available at a premium of around £5,000. You'll need to stump up another £1,000 if you want the Touring estate version. Equipment levels are very competitive across the range. Even the entry level cars get ESP stability control, Bluetooth phone integration, automatic gearboxes and metallic paint at no extra cost. There's also heated leather seats with eight-way power adjustment, a power tilt telescoping steering wheel, dual zone climate control, plus a memory feature to remember the pre-set positions of the seats and mirrors. As you'd expect, there's a high-tech engine immobiliser and a security alarm, plus ESP stability control, ABS with brake assist and enough airbags to create a bouncy castle, including curtain `bags for front and rear passengers. The top SRT-8 300C of course gets even more standard equipment thrown in. Stretch out in that generously proportioned cabin and crank up the excellent Boston Acoustics stereo while ticking off the standard satellite navigation, sports seats, adjustable pedal set and a technical finish to the dashboard with added leather. You'd need to tack a good £5,000 onto the cost of its German rivals to get anywhere near this. A 300C 3.0 V6 CRD saloon costs around 57pence per mile to run, a pretty competitive figure for a car of this class. Compare that to, say, an Audi A6 2.7 TDI S line - also retailing at around £30,000 - which will cost 63.4ppm to run and you have to wonder where the smart money is really going. Fuel economy is good in the diesel (34.9 mpg combined), emissions are a 215g/km and insurance in this version is a bargain group 16. All new Chrysler models come with a full peace-of-mind warranty package and European roadside assistance for three years/60,000 miles, plus seven years' unlimited mileage anti-corrosion guarantee. With this car, Chrysler aimed to bring some passion back to the Executive segment and it's done just that. In diesel form, the 300C models offer good economy, sparkling performance and very reasonable running costs, with both saloon and Touring versions more than making a case for themselves, especially taking into consideration Chrysler's very competitive pricing policy. Bottom line? Well even in entry-level guise, this looks like a £35-£40,000 piece of hardware and parked next to a BMW or Audi that costs this much, the Chrysler will draw more admiring glances. Living larger than life certainly has something to be said for it.Facts At A Glance CAR: Chrysler 300C range PRICES: £27,595-£41,595 - on the road INSURANCE GROUPS: 16-20 CO2 EMISSIONS: 215-330g/km PERFORMANCE: [3.0 CRD] Max Speed 143mph / 0-60mph 7.6s FUEL CONSUMPTION: [3.0 CRD] (urban) 26.2mpg / (extra urban) 42.8mpg / (combined) 34.9mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front and side airbags, ABS, stability control WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Height 5015/1880/1475mm

Chrysler Sebring : `BRING THE CHANGES

Car And Driving - Targeting a niche market, Chrysler's Sebring offers a welcome dash of individuality in a sector dominated by familiar faces. Andy Enright assesses its chances…In recent years, the majority of sales in the premium medium range and executive class saloon sectors have gone to German marques. Chrysler's Sebring, the car we look at here, isn't going to change that but it will bring a welcome element of variety to a corner of the market that was becoming rather predictable.Mind you, it'll have its work cut out in doing so, that's for sure. In the £18,000-£19,000 sector, it must do battle with upper spec versions of cars like the Ford Mondeo, Volkswagen Passat and Honda Accord and entry-level variants of premium contenders like BMW's 3 Series and Audi's A4. Still, campaigning on `exclusivity', the eternal cop-out that's the worst sort of doublespeak for miserable sales figures, needn't be this car's last refuge: it looks to deserve a whole lot more than that. So let's take a look at what Chrysler have fronted up with. The Sebring name isn't particularly well known in the UK, just a few of the old Sebring cabriolets having been sold in recent years, but the badge has a little more heritage in the US, where it has adorned Chryslers since 1995. It refers to the venue in Florida for a renowned 12hr sports car race - think of it as a mini US version of Le Mans: there's proof, if ever it were needed, that things aren't always bigger in the US. The Chrysler Sebring has found more than a worthy niche down the years, the drop-top versions of the first two generations of Sebring being the biggest selling convertible cars in the world from 2001 to 2005, even outselling the Mazda MX-5 with over 40,000 cars produced per year. Most went to the domestic market in the US but this time round Chrysler have broader ambitions."The Sebring is an intriguing car and one removed from the countless bland Euroboxes that populate the market"This generation Sebring features a chassis shared with Mitsubishi which already underpins the Dodge Caliber and the Mitsubishi Outlander, amongst others. It's a good-looking car although lacking the sort of in-your-face impact of its bigger brother, the 300C. It represents the first time that Chrysler has tried to penetrate this market with a right-hand drive car and is also the first time that Chrysler has fitted a diesel engine in a car in this sector. Although the company might be feeling its way a little, first impressions are good. The engine line up encompasses three powerplants, starting with a 154bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine with dual variable valve timing good for 36.2mpg. A more powerful option is the 167bhp 2.4 petrol unit that compensates British buyers for the lack of the V6 petrol engine offered in other markets. Of more relevance to European buyers is that 138bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine shared with the Caliber. This is probably the version to go for. Not only do you get 45.6mpg combined fuel consumption but there's a level of torque (229 lb ft) that humbles even the 2.4-litre petrol model (162 lb ft). Whichever model you go for, only one plush trim level - Limited - is being offered. It includes everything from a `cutting-edge' information, entertainment and communication navigation audio system with a 20Gb hard drive to a heated and cooled front cupholder for keeping hot beverages hot and cool beverages cool. Air conditioning, air filtering, heated leather-trimmed seats and a long list of safety systems including ESP and side-curtain airbags are all fitted as standard. The cabin of the Sebring isn't going to give Audi any sleepless nights but by previously low US standards, it's a decent effort. The clocks are softy lit in blue, while the infotainment system on the centre console will be familiar to anyone who has driven a modern Mercedes. Metallic coloured plastics dominate the centre console while the cowled dials, four-spoke sports steering wheel and two-tone trim on the doors act as small design signatures that lift the fascia above the mundane. One of the most interesting features is the information, entertainment and communication navigation radio. This navigation radio features a 165mm (6.5 in) Thin Film Transistor (TFT) display with a touch-screen panel that can support 65,000 colours. The system provides a two- or three-dimensional appearance to graphics and animation, as well as multiple font sizes and styles. The system can follow voice-activated commands, provides real-time traffic updates and incorporates many new features for music, sound, movies and personalised picture displays, including - and here's the most interesting part - a 20-gigabyte hard disc drive for storing map data for the navigation system and photos and a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port that allows for the transfer of photos onto the hard drive. You'll even be able to view the pictures you just shot on your digital camera in your car. With a long list of safety features and some fascinating technical details, the Sebring deserves to appeal to more people than the gratuitously contrarian. If it breaks up the stranglehold of the mainstream marques, our automotive environment will be a richer place for it.Facts At A Glance CAR: Chrysler Sebring range PRICES: £18,395-£19,395 - on the road INSURANCE GROUPS: 9-10 CO2 EMISSIONS: 170-211g/km PERFORMANCE: [2.0CRD] Max Speed 126mph / 0-60mph 12.0s FUEL CONSUMPTION: [2.0CRD] (urban) 55.4mpg / (extra urban) 34.4mpg / (combined) 45.6mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front and side airbags / ABS WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Height, 4850/1843/1497mm

Chrysler Grand Voyager : SIZE MATTERS

Car And Driving - The Grand Voyager might just win the `Most Improved Car' award. Andy Enright takes his hat off to a solid effort from ChryslerThe requirements for a successful full-sized Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) aren't exactly rocket science. Loads of room, plenty of practical touches, no nonsense engines, top notch safety and it helps if the vehicle in question doesn't feel like a barge to pilot. The latest Grand Voyager gets the fundamentals right and offers a lot more luxury than its predecessors. If statistics are to be believed, we're getting bigger at a fairly astonishing rate. We're getting taller and we're also getting broader. Our kids are bigger than ever before and our homes need to be bigger to house us and all of our gear. Families these days demand space and plenty of it. Were you designing the ultimate family car from a clean sheet of paper, it would not be family hatch sized any longer. It would probably resemble something more the scale of Chrysler's latest Grand Voyager, a car that makes no bones about being big. Smart packaging, seats that slide and collapse, multifarious stowage spaces and other tricks of the trade only buy car designers a certain amount of leeway. In the final reckoning, there's no substitute for size and the Grand Voyager aces most of its rivals in this regard. It's not just a big crew bus either. The latest model is extremely well finished. Two engines are available. There's a 190bhp 3.8-litre V6 (that you'd probably need to be crackers to sign up for given its thirst and emissions) and there's a very good 2.8-litre turbo diesel that will be the choice for sensible consumers. The difference between the two engines is best illustrated by the fact that you'll need to rev the 3.8-litre petrol unit to 5,200rpm to achieve its peak power figure, whereas you'll need just 3,800rpm on the board to get the best out of the 161bhp diesel. This means that while the diesel is a far more relaxing engine to drive, it feels no slower because the torque figure of 360Nm aces the petrol's 305Nm showing. Overtaking is therefore safe and unstressed, even when you're carrying a full load of passengers and gear."MPVs like this one stand or fall on their practicality…."The 2.8-litre CRD diesel engine has proven a real winner for Chrysler Jeep and has been rolled out across a number of vehicles. It's not the most refined unit of its ilk but it's big-hearted and good to drive. Visibility out of the Grand Voyager is one of the best in class with big mirrors, short overhangs and a clear commitment to reduce the width of pillars. MPVs stand or fall on their practicality. Three trim levels are available if you plump for the 2.8-litre CRD diesel engine. The range kicks off with the LX before extending up to the Touring and tops out with the Limited, which can also be yours for the same money with the 3.8-litre petrol V6. Features new to this model include heated first and second row seats, a rear-view conversation mirror, a removable torch in the rear quarter panel, electric windows in the power sliding second row doors, moveable LED reading lamps and automatic three-zone climate control for all passengers. There's even the option of a dual-DVD system with two screens available to second row passengers to play games or watch a different movie to those in the third row. The Uconnect infotainment system offers MP3 compatibility, a 30GB hard drive and touch screen and voice controlled sat nav. Passenger safety comes courtesy of traction control and ESP stability control, tyre pressure monitoring, front and and all-row curtain airbags as well as seven full-sized seats with inbuilt fixings for three ISOFIX child seats. A Swivel `n Go seating system is also available that allows the second row of seats to swivel for `conversational seating', the third row seats power-reclining into one of four positions at the touch of a button. Were the petrol-engined car a good deal cheaper to buy than its diesel counterpart, then it would have been possible to make a case for it to very low mileage buyers. As both the Limited petrol and diesel models are identically priced, it's hard to see why you'd go for the petrol car. Its emissions and fuel economy can't touch those of the 2.8-litre CRD and you'd need a particular - and rather outdated it has to be said - aversion to diesel cars in order to select the V6. Depreciation is an area where the Grand Voyager is going to do reasonably well. It's helped in this regard by upfront pricing that looks very reasonable and by the fact the Grand Voyagers have traditionally been bought by individuals who have come to recognise that viable alternatives are few. Only the Renault Grand Espace and luxury versions of the Volkswagen Caravelle rival the Grand Voyager's interior space and as a compromise between the Renault's style and the Volkswagen's internal acreage, the Grand Voyager has found itself in particular Updating a successful product is always fraught with risk. Go too radical and you can easily alienate existing buyers. Play too safe and it's possible that bolder rivals will erode your market share. With the latest Grand Voyager, Chrysler has adopted an interesting tack. The exterior is ultra conservative. Indeed it's hard to imagine a more generic MPV silhouette. Where the company has really blown the budget is in dreaming up ways of making the Grand Voyager so much more liveable inside. With its smart seating system and genuine ability to seat seven adults, the Grand Voyager gets the basics right but adds to this a whole host of comfort and convenience features that make it the consummate vehicle for the big family. Add in excellent safety provision and here's one that you can't afford to overlook.Facts At A Glance CAR: Chrysler Grand Voyager range PRICES: £25,995-£33,595 - on the road INSURANCE GROUPS: 11E-13E CO2 EMISSIONS: [CRD] 247-302g/km PERFORMANCE: [CRD] Max Speed 115mph / 0-60mph 12.8s FUEL CONSUMPTION: [CRD] (urban) 22.1mpg / (extra urban) 38.7mpg / (combined) 30.4mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin Front, side and curtain airbags / ABS WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Height 5143/1953/1816mm

Chrysler Grand Voyager - Voyage To Lapland : VOYAGE TO LAPLAND

Car And Driving - Jonathan Crouch and family take off to Lapland at the wheel of Chrysler's Grand VoyagerChristmas comes but once a year - and in my case so also did a chance to test Chrysler's Grand Voyager. Not that this was an ordinary road test loan. Chrysler, it seemed, were less bothered about my opinions on their car's handling, performance or fuel economy. And more interested in feedback from my family. Hence the invitation to take it to Lapland to meet Santa. Not Scandinavian Lapland you understand but Lapland UK, a glorified Santa's grotto based just south of Tunbridge Wells in Kent. Over 300,000 people will have visited this year, which must be some sort of record for Father Christmas theme parks. As part of their visit, the kids get fed, get to make presents with the elves, get to decorate gingerbread with `Mother Christmas', get to go ice skating and of course, get to meet Santa. Needless to say, my three young girls, Caris aged ten, Ellie, aged seven and Amy aged two, just couldn't wait. So it was that we all piled into the Grand Voyager for the two hour round trip to Lapland. Usually, such a trip can be only just tolerable with children this young but in this case, it was easy thanks to the Grand Voyager's standard multimedia system which provided pull-out video screens for all rear seat passengers. Not for the front seat passenger unfortunately, so my wife Katie had to go without seeing Tom Hanks in `Polar Express' as we crawled around the M25. Still, it got the kids in the mood. The Uconnect infotainment system offers MP3 compatibility, a 30GB hard drive and touch screen and voice controlled sat nav, so, having issued the children with their headphones, we threw in Michael Buble's Christmas album and settled back for a relaxing drive. It was some time since I'd driven a Grand Voyager and apart from the latest shape, there were a number of features fitted that I didn't remember from before. Heated first and second row seats, a rear-view conversation mirror (so you can keep an eye of the kids without altering the main mirror), electric windows in the power sliding second row doors, moveable LED reading lamps and automatic three-zone climate control for all passengers."The kind of attention to detail you get in this car will really appeal to growing families…"MPVs of course stand or fall on their practicality. Delays on the motorway meant that, as usual, as the clock ticked round to our appointment time at Lapland with Santa, we were running late. It's at times like this that you appreciate a bit of grunt under your right foot and in this instance, the big Chrysler duly obliged. The 161bhp 2.8-litre turbo diesel needs revving to just 3,800rpm in order to realise peak pulling power. Overtaking is therefore safe and unstressed, even when you're carrying a full load of passengers and gear. OK, so this isn't the most refined unit of its ilk but it's big-hearted and good to drive. It helps also that visibility out of the Grand Voyager is one of the best in class with big mirrors, short overhangs and a clear commitment to reduce the width of pillars. As a parent, passenger safety is of course crucial to me. Here, it comes courtesy of traction control and ESP stability control, tyre pressure monitoring, front and all-row curtain airbags as well as seven full-sized seats with inbuilt fixings for three ISOFIX child seats. A Swivel `n Go seating system is also available that allows the second row of seats to swivel for `conversational seating', the third row seats power-reclining into one of four positions at the touch of a button. On arrival at Lapland, I would have been happy to stay in the car park, slot in a Bruce Willis film on the DVD player and fiddle with the seats. As it was, for fear of being labelled a party-pooping Scrooge, I instead tramped in to see Santa. To be fair, it was all very well done, if rather expensive for a simple visit to Father Christmas's grotto. One thing's for certain, go to Lapland UK and you'll get enough Xmas cheer to last you the festive season. And the Grand Voyager? Well for me, one tiny incident at the end summed it up rather nicely. Back at the car after the Santa visit in the dark of the car park, my daughter Caris dropped the husky dog toy that Father Christmas had given her. We couldn't see it anywhere and were about to give up when the Chrysler came to the rescue. A removable torch in the rear quarter panel enabled us to properly search the surrounding area and locate the missing cuddly canine. Attention to detail like that will, I think, really appeal to growing families. It certainly cemented this car in our minds as an alternative we won't want to overlook when the time comes to seek a larger form of family transport.Facts At A Glance CAR: Chrysler Grand Voyager range PRICES: £27,995-£33,595 - on the road INSURANCE GROUPS: 11E-13E CO2 EMISSIONS: [CRD] 247-302g/km PERFORMANCE: [CRD] Max Speed 115mph / 0-60mph 12.8s FUEL CONSUMPTION: [CRD] (urban) 22.1mpg / (extra urban) 38.7mpg / (combined) 30.4mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin Front, side and curtain airbags / ABS WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Height 5143/1953/1816mm

Chrysler Sebring Cabriolet : CALL ME A CAB

Car And Driving - The `special relationship' between the UK and the US doesn't always extent to the automotive world. June Neary takes a look at the Chrysler Sebring Cabriolet.Just because a car sells like half price iPods in America don't necessarily assume it'll be similarly profitable on the European market. In Britain, for better of for worse, we're probably more in tune with our American cousins than the rest of Europe but we still find their taste in cars baffling from time to time. Chrysler's Sebring Cabriolet arrived on these shores with quite a reputation. It had conquered the US drop-top market and its tail was up but things haven't really gone according to plan. You've got your sporty little convertibles and your big cruising convertibles and the Sebring falls very much into the latter category. It's quite a size, being based on the Mondeo-rivalling Sebring saloon, and it's about as lively as a student on a Sunday morning. The way to appreciate this car is as a large, comfy vehicle with a removable roof, a low price and a certain degree of exclusivity. If that prospect sounds attractive, the Sebring Cabriolet is worth a look and you might be more American than you think.Inside, the clocks are softy lit in blue, while the infotainment system on the centre console will be familiar to anyone who has driven a modern Mercedes. Metallic coloured plastics dominate the centre console while the cowled dials, four-spoke sports steering wheel and two-tone trim on the doors act as small design signatures that lift the fascia above the mundane. This 138bhp Volkswagen engine is far from the most refined oil-burner we've come across and although it is certainly punchy when it gets into its stride, it doesn't seem the ideal engine for this sort of car. Still, the oil-burner doesn't do at all badly in terms of emissions and economy. It'll manage a decent 41.5 miles from one gallon of derv and will emit 183 grammes of CO2 per kilometre travelled, neither figure being what you'd expect for a car of this size and presence. Two models are sold and both are very well equipped. The 2.0-litre CRD Limited model that will prove more popular comes as standard with heated front seats, a six speaker Boston Acoustic stereo, air conditioning, a powered boot release, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, power folding and heated door mirrors, ESP stability control and a tyre pressure monitoring system. If you're really serious about music, or just easily bored, then the optional MyGIG music server and sat nav system will tempt. It's tempting to compare this car with smaller apparent rivals like VW's Eos but Chrysler will point out that this Sebring is really punting at drop-tops like Saab's 9-3 Cabrio and Audi's A5 Cabriolet in the class above (both of which also have fabric tops). Against these rivals of course, the Sebring looks very good value.Big sales in its home market mean that the Chrysler Sebring Cabriolet has nothing to prove over here. Some would say that this is just as well but the car does have its appeal for buyers who are more in tune with their American side. For not a whole lot of money, it's a big impressive-looking convertible and over here, hardly anyone else will have one. If you're unconcerned with the finer points of handling or the intricacies of cabin quality but want comfort, lots of toys and space for four, the Sebring Cabriolet is a decent left-field option.

Chrysler Sebring : GIVE US A `RING

Car And Driving - June Neary takes a look at the Chrysler Sebring Saloon.I initially found the Chrysler Sebring a tough car to get a handle on. It's a big-ish American saloon but unlike its even larger cousin, the 300C, it's lacking a little in the attitude department. Not that the Sebring is an ugly car: it just lacks anything by way of standout features to set it apart from the crowd. At least, these were my first impressions but we all know how wide of the mark they can be.The cabin of the Sebring isn't going to give Audi any sleepless nights but by previously low US standards, it's a decent effort. Only one plush trim level - Limited - is being offered. The entry-level model is the 2.0-litre petrol, probably our pick of the range. Equipment levels are through the roof and Sebring buyers won't be left wanting for much. The entry-level model is the 2.0-litre petrol, probably our pick of the range. Equipment levels are through the roof and Sebring buyers won't be left wanting for much. The Sebring is a refreshingly straightforward proposition devoid of the gimmicky add-ons that are to be found elsewhere in the medium range family car market. It may not be the most exciting choice but buyers in the hunt for a big, well-equipped saloon car at a low price might find that this Chrysler is up their street.
