Citroen C4 Range : WHAT DO YOU WANT TO MAKE THOSE EYES AT C4?

Car And Driving - The innovative C4 family hatchback has been restyled and refettled under the bonnet. Steve Walker reportsNot your run of the mill family hatchback, the Citroen C4 piles on the technology and includes some unorthodox styling features but it all hangs together rather well. The car now gets the larger C5 model's more distinctive nose, plus there's a couple of higher-tech BMW-developed petrol engines borrowed from its Peugeot 308 PSA Group stablemate. The upgraded interior is now closer in quality to most some rivals and makes up for any remaining lack with its sheer wow factor. Excellent diesel engines and lots of equipment also help to tempt buyers.Citroen confounded most people's expectations with their C4. To the outside observer, the French manufacturer seemed to have turned away from roots steeped in the creation of quirkily innovative cars and settled into a cosy niche, selling models that were competent and extremely tightly priced but rarely dynamic or challenging. Then the C4 family hatch arrived and made the kind of impact that you'd more readily associate with its plastic explosive namesake. The C4 felt fresh and distinctive and it still does but is that enough in a market where excellence is the minimum standard for big sales? With over 900,000 examples sold, Citroen took the opportunity to do a spot of refettling, installing a more distinctive front end and the 1.6-litre VTi (Variable Valve Lift and Timing) petrol engines that weren't available when this car was first launched. The mainstream C4 range is split between Coupe and Hatchback models. `Coupe' is Citroen-speak for 3-door, the family-orientated 5-door derivatives being called simply `Hatchback'. The initial impression when driving the C4 is that its makers may have overdone it on the innovation front. Digital read-outs shine back at you wherever you look and the centre of the steering wheel is fixed in position. Remarkably, however, once you get over the initial strangeness, everything works very well. You only need to divert your eyes from the road slightly to pick up the wealth of information on the main dash-top display, which now incorporates a rev counter that, if you really get your foot down, flashes red at the limit, prompting you to change up. Rear visibility is hindered somewhat by the unorthodox rear window on the Coupe but parking isn't a problem as the bottom section of the split screen gives decent view of objects immediately behind the car."This is a car quite unlike any of its rivalsā€¦"The C4 rides with impressive smoothness and composure but it doesn't quite offer the level of feedback you sometimes want from a sporty hatchback. The variable assistance power steering has an accurate feel and the car is nicely balanced through corners. If you're familiar with the original C4, then the changes to the facelifted version won't come as too much of a shock. There's a redesigned, curvier bonnet to make it look more like the large C5, whilst the grille benefits from restyled integrated chevrons. The front bumper has also been revamped and the number plate repositioned for what Citroen hope is `a stronger, sportier, more dynamic look'. The rear lights of the C4 Coupe are now finished in transparent crystal, there are fresh wheel designs and paint colours, plus in the pursuit of `added elegance', chrome inserts are featured on some models. Inside the cabin, the rev counter has been relocated to the innovative translucent central display unit. A plush grain is now featured on the dashboard and doors which, along with the smarter dĆ©cor, makes for a more upmarket feel, while the integrated scented air freshener deals with unwanted odours. The interior is spacious and the Coupe provides similar amounts of rear legroom and boot space to the Hatchback. The boot opening is narrower, however, and the levers that fold the front seats forward allowing access to the rear have a habit of sticking up to catch the shins of passengers climbing in. Ouch. The engine range opens with Citroen's older 90 and 110bhp 1.4 and 1.6-litre 16-valve petrol units. Best however, to try and stretch either for a diesel or for one of the more modern petrol engines. Many will choose the 120bhp 1.6-litre VTi option with its 120mph performance and 42mpg combined fuel economy.. In general, these high-revving petrol units are not without their charm but many buyers will be swayed by Citroen's impressive HDi common-rail diesels. The 1.6-litre HDi oil-burner is remarkably quiet. In 92bhp form, it will reach 62mph from standstill in 12.5s and if you upgrade to the 110bhp option there's a 11.2s time for the sprint and the option of Citroen's 6-speed electronic gearbox. All Citroen C4 models receive ABS with EBD and brake assist, twin front and lateral airbags plus side window airbags. There's a multi-function trip computer, a CD stereo, remote central locking, electric front windows, electric door mirrors, power steering and cruise control with a speed limiter. This is a well equipped car and it becomes even more so as you ascend the trim level range. In recent times, there have also been a number of technology upgrades. Citroen's latest Europe-wide navigation system, MyWay, has been introduced, which features a high-resultion 7-inch colour screen, Bluetooth and USB connectivity as well as an audio system with a built-in 10GB hard drive. As tends to be the case, the Citroen C4's best fuel economy is produced by its smallest diesel engines. The 1.6-litre HDI units return outstanding 60mpg fuel economy making them desirable all-round prospects. Expect around 44mpg from the 1.4-litre petrol and just over 40mpg from both the 1.6 VTi unit on the combined cycle. Insurance varies between groups 4 and 6. If you find yourself uninspired by the obvious choices in the family hatchback sector, Citroen's C4 continues to make a distinctive and slightly leftfield choice. Citroen is at its best when it does things that little bit differently and the C4 is a prime example of this. The three-door Coupe and five-door hatchback are very different propositions visually but that should help the C4 appeal to the maximum number of buyers. The unashamedly high-tech approach favoured by the C4 will alienate some people while inspiring others but it makes the car quite unlike any of its rivals. Reasonable build quality and a decent drive are matched to excellent equipment levels, a smarter feel, a better range of petrol engines and some of the best diesels in the business. With Citroen's tight pricing and aggressive marketing promotions placed into the mix, the C4 delivers on a lot of levels.Facts At A Glance CAR: Citroen C4 range PRICES: £13,495-£17,995 - on the road INSURANCE GROUPS: 4-6 CO2 EMISSIONS: 115-159g/km PERFORMANCE: 0-60mph - 12.5s / Max Speed - 112mph FUEL CONSUMPTION: (combined) 64mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: six airbags, ABS, EBD, EBA.
Citroen Nemo Multispace : COMMERCIAL DECISION

Car And Driving - CitroĆ«n's Nemo Multispace brings top small van qualities to the small MPV sector. Steve Walker reports.Making an MPV out of a commercial vehicle is a common practice in the modern car market and why not? MPVs need space and vans do tend to have it in abundance. They're usually toughly built too which is handy in a vehicle that owners are going to let their kids loose in. Some vans are obviously more suited to the people carrying role than others and CitroĆ«n's Nemo doesn't immediately strike you as being ripe for a refit. It's one of the smallest purpose-built vans on the market but that didn't stop CitroĆ«n using it as a basis for the family-friendly Nemo Multispace MPV.The Nemo van was developed to sit below the big selling Berlingo van in CitroĆ«n's light commercial vehicle range. The first generation Berlingo just happens to be the vehicle that did most to popularise the van based MPV concept in the UK market with its Berlingo Multispace derivative. Since then, CitroĆ«n has never really looked back, bringing us low cost people carrying versions of its second generation Berlingo and the larger Dispatch van. It always looked likely that the diminutive Nemo would get the same treatment. The engines on offer are predictably small and economical. Both have 1.4-litre capacities so the choice boils down to petrol verses diesel. The 1.4-litre petrol develops 75bhp, giving it a 5bhp advantage over the diesel but its maximum torque of 118Nm at 2,600rpm is bettered by the 160Nm that the diesel delivers nearly 1,000rpm lower in its rev range. In all honesty, both engines produce lacklustre performance in the Nemo Multispace but going quickly isn't the point here. The 18 second 0-60mph performance of the diesel is very slow but it's unlikely to prove a major hindrance on the school run on in the supermarket car park."The qualities that manufacturers routinely build into their commercial vehicles translate very well to the bottom end of the MPV market"The Nemo has a slightly more elevated driving position than you'll find in most small MPV products and the same wide range of visibility thanks to its big windscreen and side windows. The stubby bonnet, flat back end and large rear screen also help when parking, as does a turning circle of under ten meters, but the way the rear side windows taper upwards towards the tail does limit what you can see when looking over your shoulder. The suspension is quite soft and bouncy but ride comfort is generally quite good, you wouldn't obviously mark this down as van in disguise. If you thought a van-based people carrier would be a utilitarian thing in look and feel, the Nemo Multispace should exceed your expectations. The chunky exterior styling has more than a hint of 4x4 about it with those large protruding bumpers and flared wheelarches. The bumpers and the side rubbing strips also serve as useful protection for the kind of parking knocks that vans and MPVs have a habit of picking up. The front and rear light clusters are also mounted high up out of harm's way and the Nemo Multispace benefits from the Nemo van's convenient access points. A larger tailgate opens up the whole rear of the vehicle revealing a 360-litre boot with a very low loading lip, and that's below the parcel shelf. Stack your goods to the ceiling and there's lots more capacity but the Nemo really shows its commercial vehicle origins when you fold the rear seats and there's 890-litres to play with. The back seats can be lifted out too, returning the vehicle to something approaching its original cargo-carrying state but most of the time, buyers will have that rear bench occupied by passengers. Access to it is through the twin sliding side doors and although the aperture isn't particularly wide, the sliding design does stop your offspring re-sculpting the bodywork of adjacent cars when they exit. There's a single trim level available with the Nemo Multispace but it includes a CD Stereo, a trip computer, a multi-adjustable driving position, electric front windows and electric heated wing mirrors. Both engines come with manual gearboxes as standard. The petrol is two seconds faster but it's the fact of its £1,000 lower list price that will give it the edge. The diesel engine is available with a Sensodrive automatic gearbox that improves performance by a fraction and has no effect on economy. For £800 more, its labour saving attributes make it a tempting option on a car like the Nemo. Those wanting to push the boat out when specifying their Nemo Multispace can add niceties like rear parking sensors and air-conditioning. The CitroĆ«n boot light that doubles as a detachable torch comes as standard. In terms of safety kit, there's ABS brakes, plus twin front and lateral airbags but no ESP. The key rivals for the Nemo Multispace are conventional car-based models like Vauxhall's Meriva and Renault's Modus but also the Fiat Qubo. The Qubo is virtually identical to the Nemo having also emerged from the LCV partnership between CitroĆ«n, Peugeot and Fiat. The diesel model carries the CitroĆ«n Airdream badge that the manufacturer applies to all its cleanest vehicles. It certainly is efficient with a 62.8mpg combined economy figure and emissions of 119g/km. Thanks to a 9.9 gallon fuel tank, this diesel model has a theoretical 620-mile range so there's every chance that owners will forget what a filling station looks like. The 42mpg and 165g/km of the petrol version looks mediocre by comparison but remember the oil-burner is £1,000 more expensive. It will still take diesel owners some time to recoup that premium if they're covering small annual mileages. With insurance in group 2E and a commercial vehicle design that prioritises low repair and maintenance costs, the Nemo Multispace should prove a refreshingly cost effective ownership proposition. Service intervals for both engines are every 20,000 miles which is a lot of trips to Asda. The qualities that manufacturers routinely build into their commercial vehicles translate very well to the bottom end of the MPV market. CitroĆ«n appreciates this better than most with a long history of fitting seats and windows to its vans. The Nemo Multispace is the smallest such model that the marque has attempted yet. The interior space isn't massive as a result but if your requirements run to carrying a family of four and a good amount of luggage, it's well up to the job. The funky 4x4-style looks will also count in its favour, meaning that if you don't tell anyone it's a van, they'll never know.Facts At A Glance CAR: CitroĆ«n Nemo Multispace PRICES: £9,995 - £10,995 - on the eroad INSURANCE GROUP: 2E CO2 EMISSIONS: 119 - 165g/km PERFORMANCE: [1.4 HDI] top speed 94mph / 0-60mph 18.2s FUEL CONSUMPTION: (urban) 49.6mpg, (extra urban) 74.3mpg, (combined) 62.8mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: ABS, Twin front and lateral airbags.
Citroen C3 Picasso : PIC `N' MIX

Car And Driving - Citroƫn's C3 Picasso has a more involving take on the small MPV theme. June Neary reports. If there's one class of car with the potential to send me to sleep, it's the MPV. I don't mean that they're big enough to stretch out in the back of when you feel like forty winks. It's more the lack of anything exciting or emotionally involving to latch on to with them. Some are obviously better than others in this regard but the MPV is basically the answer to a boring question. How can family life be made a bit easier? Many MPVs do the practicality thing exceptionally well but good grief, aren't they dull while they're doing it? As you might imagine, my hopes weren't high for the Citroen C3 Picasso. Not only is it an MPV, it's a supermini-based one which, I thought, means it's too small to be really practical. Not for the first time, my expectations were confounded. The C3 Picasso turned out to be a bold attempt by Citroen to inject some interest in to what is essentially a vehicle of function. The designers have accomplished that and them some. Its styling has real attitude, by supermini MPV standards, with its robust curves and attractive detailing. Life with the Picasso immediately looked a more inviting prospect than it does with most of the also-rans in this sector. This isn't a big car but as a supermini MPV, it can't be all about style over substance: that practicality needs to be present too. The interior reflects the lines and curves of the outside, giving the car a cohesive feel from a design perspective, but it also has lots of space. There's more headroom than you could want and loads of space in the rear. The back seats split 60:40 on our test car and are easy to fold down with one gentle tug of a lever. The boot can hold an impressive 500 litres with the seats up and features an adjustable floor. This can be set in two positions to either create a flat load floor with a cubby beneath or one larger loading space. The plastics in the interior are disappointing in places, particularly the grained stuff on the dash top, but it's hard to fault the layout. The controls are simple to fathom and there are plenty of neat touches that make the C3 Picasso out of the ordinary. The glovebox is very small but there are good-sized door pockets and a number of other cubbies for smaller items. If anything, the ride and handling of this Citroen is even more of a standout feature than its design. The suspension is supple over surface imperfections but taut enough to maintain its composure through humps and dips. The car changes direction smartly with responsive steering that's light around town but grows heavier as speeds increase to inspire confidence. It corners neatly too with none of the body roll that has afflicted so many of Citroen's past MPV efforts. The gearbox action is a little loose and long throw and the sharp brake pedal feels at-odds with the long travel of throttle and clutch but otherwise, the C3 Picasso is a minor revelation to drive. Both of the C3 Picasso's diesel engines can come close to returning 60mpg on the combined cycle. And emissions are pegged at 128g/km for the 90bhp model and 130g/km for the HDi 110. It means that despite its size and carrying capacity, this car should prove reassuringly inexpensive to run. There are three trim levels, VT, VTR+ and Exclusive. The basic VT model has remote central locking, a trip computer, electric door mirrors, electric front windows and a CD stereo. Only the front seat occupants get airbags at this level, however, and many buyers will feel like upgrading to get side and curtain airbags in what is a family vehicle. ESP stability control is a cost option and then only with the range-topping Exclusive models which also get more luxurious trim materials. The key rivals for the C3 Picasso are the Nissan Note, Vauxhall Meriva and Renault Grande Modus. Beyond these, the latest Nissan Cube and Kia Soul offer a similar blend of style and practicality. Citroen would appear to have little to fear in this company and will be expecting to tighten its grip on the European MPV market with this model.Good things are happening the MPV market and the Citroen C3 Picasso is in the vanguard. This little car shows emphatically that small practical vehicles don't have to be as dull as an accountancy convention. It has a little style, a little flare and a little fun built in but it remains a very functional and user-friendly small car. Other MPV makes should take note.

Citroen Berlingo XTR+ : BERLINGO GOES ANYWHERE

Car And Driving - Why go all out for a 4x4 van when you can get extra off-road at a fraction of the price? That's the thinking behind the Berlingo XTR+. Steve Walker takes a look.A complex and expensive four-wheel-drive transmission system isn't the be all or the end all of off-road driving. Anyone who regularly ventures into the great unknown that lies beyond our road network's verges will tell you that it's possible to go a long way on ground clearance and mechanical grip. Citroen is well aware of this and has long produced XTR+ versions of its vans as viable alternatives to full four-wheel-drive commercial vehicles. The latest Berlingo XTR+ offers an element of off-road capability at a manageable price.Let's face it. If you're going to be driving your commercial vehicle off-road day in, day out in testing conditions, you want to be as sure as possible that you aren't going to get stuck or sustain any damage. A fully kitted out pick-up truck or a real hardcore 4x4 van are the only options. If, however, you occasionally have to cross a muddy building site or trundle up a dirt road or two, the Berlingo XTR+ could be ideal. It's less expensive than the various vans based on compact 4x4s, it retains the big carrying capacity of a standard Berlingo van and it should have all the off-road capability you need. That's the plan anyway. Only the front wheels are driven on the Berlingo XTR+, just like on any standard Berlingo van, but between them is a limited slip differential. This works to reapportion the engine's torque to the wheel with the most grip to help prevent the van from floundering in slippery conditions. There's no input required from the drive, except perhaps a boot-full of throttle when the situation demands it. The engine is the Berlingo's 1.6-litre HDi in 90bhp guise and its torque output of 215Nm at 1.750rpm should make it pleasantly tractable from low speeds. The Berlingo XTR+ runs on Michelin Synchrone 4x4 tyres which are designed for a mix of on and off-road usage."There aren't many direct alternatives out there to an XTR+ Berlingo"The limited slip differential and tyres help maximise the available grip but the XTR+ has a few other tricks up its sleeve to keep things moving in the mud while shrugging off any prangs from rogue masonry and the like. Heavy duty suspension components have been installed, increasing the ride height of the vehicle by 30mm to help stop it dragging its belly over the terrain. Then, should the underside come into contact with anything untoward, there's extensive protection to avoid damage occurring. A heavy duty metal sump guard is installed, along with two metal skid plates running the length of the vehicle to protect the brake and fuel lines. The L1 Berlingo van on which the XTR+ is based is 4,380mm in length. That's 243mm longer than the previous generation Berlingo with 350mm extra in the wheelbase department. The space in the rear is accessed through side hinged rear doors which open to nearly 180 degrees and reveal a compartment that's 1,800mm long and never less than 1,229mm wide. Sliding side doors are available as options, as is a hinged roof flap through which long items can be poked. The loading lip at the rear is nice and low and the load bay gets excellent protection from its contents courtesy of panelling that extends halfway up the sides of the vehicle. The standard bulkhead is a ladder frame behind the driver's seat only and an unusual touch is the load compartment light that can be detached and used as a torch. Internally, the Citroen Berlingo is an impressive piece of work by van standards with good quality materials and neat design. It's worth remembering that the compact 4x4 vans on the market are based on passenger cars and will be noticeably better appointed in the cabin than their predecessors - though the fittings maybe also less durable. The storage space is abundant and clever solutions abound, ready to swallow up all the paraphernalia of your working day. There are both two and three-seater cab options and in the two-seater Berlingo, the single passenger seat folds down to reveal a desk and cup holders. The space in the Berlingo's cabin is immediately evident. It's wide with plenty of room for driver and passenger. Problems start to arise when you specify the three-seat model, a highly unusual inclusion on a van of this size. The protruding dash mounted gear lever makes the middle berth virtually uninhabitable by anyone with legs and Citroen's claim that this "occasional seat" is ideal for young children seems a moot point. The few remaining chimney sweeps might be interested but in this day and age, taking your child to work on a daily basis is rightfully frowned upon. The real advantage of the Extenso cabin, as the three-seater layout is known, is the ability to fold the outer passenger seat down to increase the load length available. You can also flip the seat cushion up to make a handy storage area on the cab floor. Standard equipment on the Berlingo includes ABS brakes, a trip computer, a CD stereo, central locking, electric front windows and internally adjustable door mirrors. The XTR+ is based on the plusher LX trim, however, and that adds remote central locking, heated electric wing mirrors and an external temperature sensor. There's also the considerable pulling power of a standard Trafficmaster Smartnav satellite navigation and vehicle tracking system. There aren't many direct alternatives out there to an XTR+ Berlingo. In terms of its off-road ability, it's halfway between conventional compact vans and the van models based on compact 4x4 passenger cars. The latter group are more stylish and will be better suited to off-road travel but the price will reflect that and the carrying capacity will be substantially less. The XTR+ is also available in platform cab and crew van bodystyles with a number of further options available through Citroen's Ready to Run programme. Van operators who find themselves infrequently faced with the need for a spot of off-road driving have a conundrum on their hands. Do they take the risk of getting stuck with a conventional compact van or shell out the extra cash for a less practical 4x4 model that can perform in the rough? Citroen's Berlingo XTR+ offers a compromise. With its front wheel drive layout given extra capability through a limited slip differential, mixed terrain tyres and upgraded suspension, it should be the perfect fit for some van buyers.Facts At A Glance MANUFACTURER: Citroen MODEL: Berlingo XTR+ BHP: 90bhp PAYLOAD CAPACITY: 625kg LOAD VOLUME: 3.3m3 GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT: 1,960kg LENGTH: 4,380mm WIDTH: 1,810mm HEIGHT: 1,840mm July 17th 2009
