Lamborghini Gallardo (2003 - To Date) : BABY G

Car And Driving - Models Covered: (2 dr coupe, convertible 5.0 V10 petrol [SE, Nera, Superleggera])BY ANDY ENRIGHTThe Gallardo has been Lamborghinis biggest selling car by a massive margin and certainly their best used model. The input of Audi has revolutionised quality control. Post 2006 model year cars are by far the best with the e-gear models being particularly in demand. The Gallardos shape works wonderfully well. Although it shares many styling cues with its bigger brother, the Murcielago, the Gallardo is surprisingly small and slightly more aggressive with its chopped-off angles. Luc Donkerwolke, the man responsible for penning both cars, has once again excelled himself. Obviously a Lamborghini, the Gallardos detailing does enough to distance it from the Murcielago. Park the two side by side and youll appreciate the differences but such is the success of the Gallardos lines that the latest Murcielago has adopted a sharper, Gallardo-looking front end. The Spyder is an interesting piece of kit. The Gallardo chassis was designed from the outset with an open-topped car in mind and hence has an incredible resistance to twisting. Even with the metal roof lopped off, the Gallardo is still a good deal stiffer than many supercar coupes. Only a very small amount of strengthening work was required, with some reinforcements added to the sills. Unlike the Murcielago Roadster, which has a fiendishly complicated ragtop, the erection of which would make a fitting Krypton Factor finale, the Gallardo shows significant progress with an electrically folding hood mechanism operated by a pair of buttons on the centre of the dashboard. Twenty seconds later, youre good to go, the roof either neatly cinched into place or secreted beneath the engine cover well out of harms way. The rear screen moves automatically while the hood is being raised or lowered and defaults to a raised position. Unlike its great rival, the Ferrari F430 Spider, the Lamborghini actually looks pretty smart with the roof up, the angular styling giving it a far better resolved profile than the slightly awkward-looking Ferrari. If ultimate performance is your goal, look no further than the Gallardo Superleggera. Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tyres, optional four-point seat belts and carbon ceramic brakes signal its intent. The key change was excising just over 100kg from the cars dry weight which dropped to 1,330kg largely through extensive use of carbon fibre. The biggest change to the styling, aside from the CF splitter and diffuser, was the fitment of 19-inch forged alloy wheels with titanium wheel nuts to shave an additional few grammes off. Theres also a Superleggera side decal.Early Gallardos can be found from around £75,000 although youll need to add £2,500 for the e-gear sequential manual gearbox, should you so desire it. Youll still need £94,000 for a manual model year 06 car. Gallardo Spyders and Superleggeras are still trading for serious money and the canny buyers will wait a while until this market cools down. The big ticket item to watch out for with a Gallardo is the clutch. Early cars came with a clutch plate made of a material not entirely dissimilar to Swiss cheese and there were reports of some cars with as little as 1,500 miles on the clock on their third clutch. Naturally, this would be dependent on the drivers skill or lack thereof, and in 2005 the clutch was upgraded to a beefier item. Residual values tend to take a sharp dip after two years due to the fact that the 24 month Lamborghini warranty was not originally extendable and many owners took this as an opportunity to offload and move on. Look for scrapes to the front valance caused by car park ramps and also kerb damage to the alloy wheels. The interiors tend to be strong and the Audi-derived major mechanicals are also tough. Some have complained about paint resilience at the front of their cars and the Gallardo does seem very prone to stone chipping. Meticulous owners will apply 3M or similar protective films. (approx based on a 2005 Gallardo coupe) Spares are predictably expensive. The Pirelli P-Zero tyres retail at around £180 a pair for the front boots and £280 for the rears (fitted and balanced), which means that a new set of rubber isnt going to leave much change from £1,000. Servicing comes every 7,500 miles and a normal server is around £1100 with bigger ones £2200. Lamborghini dealers have really got their act together in recent years and unlike in days of yore, wont sting you with hidden costs. Against the clock, the latest Gallardo will register a sprint to 60mph in 3.8 seconds and keep going to 196mph. The four-wheel drive electronics arent quite as clever as those in a 911 Turbo when it comes to stepping cleanly off the line but get up to higher velocities and you wont begrudge that, the Gallardo behaving for the most part like a traditional rear driver. Only when youre really pushing it over scabby tarmac can you feel the front tyres biting for grip. What impresses most is the body control. Drive the same section of road in a Porsche 911 or even a Ferrari F430 and there would be a lot more roll, squat and dive. The Lamborghini planes flat, almost sucked to the ground, its hefty 19-inch tyres and foursquare stance giving the driver almost unassailable confidence levels. The Superleggera takes things to another level. The car is definitely louder than a standard Gallardo but the performance differences dont look much on paper: an identical top speed and torque figure, 0.2s knocked off the sprint to 100kmh (now 3.8s) and 10bhp added to the power output. On track, a different picture emerges with the Superleggera offering superior grip and body control, largely down to the tyre choice. Snappy at the limit, it demands respect but is massively capable, on well-surfaced, dry tarmac at least. Needless to say, it delivers savage punch out of corners. Before the advent of the Gallardo, the dream ticket was always an Italian supercar with German build quality. Now that such a thing exists, it seems strange that some see fit to complain about an erosion of Lamborghini brand values. The top brass at SantAgata hold the belief that the naysayers can complain all they like as the order books demonstrate this to be clearly a winning formula. Used Gallardos are generally sturdy. Look for the uprated clutch and servicing done on the button with no corners cut and you shouldnt go far wrong.

Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera : CARBON DATING

Car And Driving - When it comes to supercars, Lamborghini aims to prove that less can be more. Andy Enright reportsTaking the best junior supercar and making it better, both on road and on track, seems a surefire recipe for success and the swollen order book for the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera would appear to underpin this logic. Despite featuring the trappings of civility, the Superleggera nevertheless has a spiky personality. As much as their manufacturers would have us believe that supercars are all about no-compromise engineering, cutting-edge capability and purity of focus, most of these attributes are mere by-products in the quest to one-up each other and nowhere is the competition fiercer than between Lamborghini and Ferrari. Lamborghini upped the ante with the introduction of the Gallardo in 2003, comprehensively trumping the Ferrari 360 Modena. Maranello hit back with the gutsier F430 and Lamborghini once more responded with the uprated 2006 model year Gallardo. Now the SantAgata company has opted to land a pre-emptive strike on its rivals with the Gallardo Superleggera, a lighter and marginally more powerful Gallardo thats aimed at well-heeled customers who will occasionally take their car onto the race track but need something thats acceptably refined to the extent that it wont require trailering there and back. The Superleggera follows in a tradition of lighter, more focused sports models. Porsche has the RS variants, Ferrari the Challenge Stradale line and now Lamborghini joins the fray. The Gallardo Superleggera has the ability to lull the driver into a false sense of security. Glance down at the fascia and spot the standard air conditioning, the electronic stability control and even the optional satellite navigation unit and it all seems a long way from the snarling lightweight we were led to expect. These details contrast with the aggressive Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tyres and the optional four-point belts fitted to our test car. At first, it was tough to decide whether the Superleggera was a cynical marketing exercise or something rather different."Its a Gallardo, plus two or three per cent. No more, no less. Mind you, by any objective measure, thats still a fantastic thing."Driving it on road gave little away. The optional carbon ceramic brakes have a worrying dead spot at the top of the travel and the steel rotors seem a better bet for everyday use. The car was definitely louder than a standard Gallardo but the performance differences were marginal: an identical top speed and torque figure, 0.2s knocked off the sprint to 100kmh (now 3.8s) and 10bhp added to the power output. On track, a different picture emerged with the Superleggera offering superior grip and body control, largely down to the tyre choice. Snappy at the limit, it demands respect but is massively capable, on well-surfaced, dry tarmac at least. Needless to say, it delivers savage punch out of corners. Customers choose between e-gear and manual gearboxes. Lamborghini has taken a different tack to the usual just add horsepower approach and reducing weight rather than crudely boosting the engine seems a smarter way forward. The key change has been excising just over 100kg from the cars dry weight which drops to 1,330kg largely through extensive use of carbon fibre. The seats are now lightweight CF items, and the same material is also used for the fixed rear spoiler, engine cover, mirrors, door inserts, front splitter and rear diffuser. Theres a polycarbonate window over the engine and the gearbox casing is now cast from magnesium. The biggest change to the styling, aside from the CF splitter and diffuser, is the fitment of 19-inch forged alloy wheels with titanium wheel nuts to shave an additional few grammes off. Theres also a Superleggera side decal. Build quality seems very good with none of the groaning and creaking the carbon fibre panels often exhibit. Space inside is also reasonably good although taller drivers may be pinched for headroom. Legroom is excellent and all-round visibility is way better than any mid-engined supercar has any right to deliver. Theres even a decently sized trunk up front. If youre in the market for a Gallardo Superleggera, chances are youre not exactly watching the pennies, but its in this area that the car betrays a few concerns. The first is pricing. Expect to pay around £34,000 more than the standard Gallardo which is a serious step up in price for a few degrees of added capability that few owners will never explore. One-upmanship? You decide. Then theres the gearbox pricing issue. Buy a standard Gallardo and it comes with a manual box, with the e-gear sequential manual tacking around £7,000 onto that price. With the Superleggera, the e-gear is standard and the manual is a no-cost option. In other words, specify it with the six-speed manual and youre in effect forking over £7,000 to buy an automated gearbox you neither want nor receive. Hardly cricket. The Superleggera comes with air conditioning and ESP stability control but many desirable features are options. These include the carbon fibre interior, satellite navigation, four-point seat belts, the high rear wing with parking camera and the front lifting kit that helps the nose over speed bumps or sharp approaches to garages. Most Superleggeras will probably be nudging £160,000 when typically specified. Trying to drive the Gallardo Superleggera sensibly on the launch route was an exercise in temptation resistance. Yes, it is possible to noodle along at 60mph on a dual carriageway but the engine feels impatient and urges you to stab the throttle every now and then to clear the Gallardos big lungs. I averaged just over 9mpg on a combined road and track session and an average of 13mpg would be very good going. Emissions are a bluff 400g/km. The Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera is undoubtedly a proper supercar. It demands respect and has that crucial element of malevolence masked beneath layers of civility and accessibility. The problem is, its not significantly different to the standard car to which the fitment of the Pirelli P-Zero Corsas would add edge to the handling balance. Its also a good deal more expensive, especially if you want a six-speed manual version. As effective as it is, the Superleggera therefore only receives a qualified thumbs up. This might seem harsh given that it is a better car both on street and circuit and the light weight philosophy indicates working smarter rather than harder but Lamborghini likes to proclaim its extreme credentials and, for me, the Superleggera represents an opportunity missed. Something really vicious, that left you bathed in sweat and juiced with adrenaline was what I was hoping for. What I got was a Gallardo, plus two or three per cent. Mind you, by any objective measure, thats still a fantastic thing.FACTS AT A GLANCE CAR: Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera PRICE: £151,000 [est] INSURANCE GROUP: 20 CO2 EMISSIONS: 400g/km PERFORMANCE: 0-60mph 3.7s Top Speed: 195.7mph FUEL CONSUMPTION: (urban) 11 (extra urban) 17 (combined) 13mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: twin front airbags, ESP stability control, ABS WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: length 4300mm, width 1900mm, height 1165mm

Lamborghini Gallardo : BRING THE NOISE

Car And Driving - The Gallardo may have lived in the shadow of its big brother, the Murcielago, but the latest model could well be the most significant car Lamborghini has ever built. Andy Enright reportsIt takes quite some time to get your head around a Lamborghini Gallardo. After all, Lambos were always supposed to be cars that would leave the average driver with post traumatic stress disorder after the briefest acquaintance. Yet the latest Gallardo doesnt quite fit that billing. The doors dont open skywards, instead functioning much like a normal car. Yes, its low but visibility isnt too bad, theres air conditioning, a decent stereo and the controls dont seem to require superhuman effort to function. Shouldnt it be a little more special? Try accelerating beyond 4,000rpm. Then it becomes a very different animal altogether.European drive-by noise regulations have meant that Lamborghini have been forced to baffle the Gallardos exhaust at low revs, making it civilised around town. Give the accelerator a good prod, however, and the difference is astonishing. I had the opportunity to drive the Gallardo back to back with the 6.5-litre Murcielago and the smaller car is a good deal more vocal when driven in anger, the five-litre V10 making itself heard from half a mile distant, its strident bark ricocheting off the sides of the Tuscan valley. All was well again. Lamborghini are still building cars that could earn you an ASBO in double quick time. The changes to the latest £123,000 Gallardo are wide reaching, despite the fact that it doesnt look all that different. Still, it didnt need to. With Ferraris svelte 360 Modena evolving into the rather lumpen F430, the Gallardo didnt need to do much at all on the styling front to stay ahead of the car from Maranello and its also a good deal more arresting than the comparatively mundane-looking Porsche 911 Turbo. Only Fords GT offers a similar visual right hook in this sector of the market. Where the original Gallardo enjoyed a serious power advantage over the 360 Modena, the arrival of the F430 saw the car from SantAgata lose out in terms of power to weight ratio. The latest car sees its power hiked from 493bhp to a hefty 512bhp with torque remaining static at 376lb/ft. This now gives the Gallardo a real sledgehammer punch at the top end, peak power streaming in at a stratospheric 7,800rpm, and restores the power to weight advantage in its favour. Aside from that, the brakes are bigger, the software for the optional e-gear paddle shift gearbox has been finessed and the all-wheel drive chassis has been sharpened still further."Even with 512bhp on tap in a mid-engined car costing this much, the Gallardo never feels intimidating "The paddle shift is now one of the best of its ilk. The only trouble is that the redline is a mere 200rpm above where peak power is produced, so just when it feels like the car is getting ballistically rapid, it shifts up a gear. Still, thats preferable to the manual car which just hits a very intrusive rev limiter. A small grumble in an otherwise very accomplished package. If you opt to spend around £150,000 on the more track-focused Superleggera version, the e-gear set-up is a no-cost option. Roll away from a standing start in the Gallardo and it gives little clue as to its potency. Youll have to get used to the goldfish-bowl nature of driving a car like this as onlookers peer in to see whos piloting it before registering a faint look of disappointment that it isnt a celeb they recognise. Youll gain their attention again the moment you prod the accelerator pedal. There is no appreciable ramping up in the noise level. It just appears and the first time it happens youll physically recoil from the sound emanating from the back of the baby Lamborghini. Its an angry, feral noise that is a world away from the breathy timbre of a Porsche 911 or the screaming, almost musical crescendo of a Ferrari V8. In short, it sounds like a Lamborghini should. It goes like one too. Against the clock, the Gallardo will register a sprint to 60mph in 3.8 seconds and keep going to 196mph. Equipment levels have been enhanced and include items like the Lamborghini Multimedia System with CD changer, MP3 player and tuner. A revised palette of interior and exterior colours is offered as are a whole Range of options including a reversing camera and TV tuner. Other options include the popular Calisto wheels and a sports pack with racing steering wheel and suspension. The Gallardos shape still works wonderfully well. If one were to design the ultimate useable supercar, it would have Italian charisma and German build quality, the looks of a Lamborghini and the utility of a Porsche, but would go, stop and steer like nothing else. The Gallardo is that car and, for the time being at least, is probably the finest all-round supercar money can buy.FACTS AT A GLANCE CAR: Lamborghini Gallardo PRICE: £123,000 on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 20 CO2 EMISSIONS: 400g/km PERFORMANCE: Max Speed 196mph / 0-60mph 3.8s FUEL CONSUMPTION: (combined) 14.5mpg WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE ?
