Land Rover Discovery 4 : THE BIG 4

Car And Driving - There aren't too many vehicles that dominate their class in quite such an imperious manner as the Land Rover Discovery 4. Steve Walker reportsThere was always something endearing about older Land Rover Discovery models. On virtually any objective calculation, they were way off the pace but the way they managed to triumph over considerable adversity was almost Shackletonesque. Fortunately, recent generations of the Discovery haven't needed to rely on the British admiration for stiff upper lips to do well. The Discovery 3 was designed as new from the ground up and boasted enough technology and design savvy to punt all of its rivals clean off the map. The 4th generation car amounts to a wide-ranging collection of revisions made with the intention of keeping the Disco on top.The concept of the facelift is a familiar one at Land Rover, the British marque having shown itself to be a master of the mid-life refresh over the years, but is facelift the right term for the Discovery 4? The market is being encouraged to view this Discovery as a completely new fourth generation of Land Rover's family-sized off-roader, hence the Discovery 4 branding, but it uses the same basic mechanicals and design as the Disco 3. The truth is somewhere in the middle with Land Rover engineers having found ways to improve upon virtually every aspect of the vehicle's make-up. Considering they had a class-leading product when they started, that should be enough. The engines dropped into the Discovery have to cope not only with the car's size but with the disparate range of duties for which it's designed. The entry-level unit is the 2.7-litre twin turbo V6 diesel that won critical acclaim in the Discovery 3 for its refinement and smoothness, if not its outright performance. Power is rated at 188bhp and torque of 440Nm is achieved at just 1,900rpm but customers who like a Land Rover with some muscle will want the 3.0-litre TDV6 engine on which the marque is pinning big hopes. Its faith appears to be justified, the 3.0-litre unit is a development of the 2.7-litre engine and makes 242bhp but it's the torque that really makes an impact. The engine develops 500Nm just 500 milliseconds from idle which is just what the Disco wants for towing or clawing its way out of deep mud. Peak torque of 600Nm is achieved at just 2,000rpm and although the engine was developed jointly by Land Rover and Jaguar, it has been heavily modified to cope with the extreme conditions it will experience in a hard-working Discovery."The latest Discovery 4 version looks stronger than ever."Lots of attention has been paid to enhancing the way the Discovery drives on and off the tarmac. A beefed-up anti-roll bar and special suspension knuckles help control the car's body movements through corners while the variable powersteering has been tuned for greater precision at low speeds coupled with a more relaxed feel on the motorway. Always guaranteed to provoke curiosity is Land Rover's patented Terrain Response system. This is virtually akin to having an expert sitting alongside you, helping to get the best out of the vehicle, on or off road. The driver chooses one of five terrain settings via a rotary knob mounted on the centre console. There's a general driving programme plus one for slippery conditions (dubbed `Grass/Gravel/Snow') and three specialist off road modes (`Mud and Ruts', `Sand', `Rock Crawl'). The latest system adds a launch control function designed for deep sand as well as improvements to the Hill Descent Control and the Rock Crawl mode to ensure tricky manoeuvres are made that bit easier. Land Rover's styling treads a classy, predictable path and its customers wouldn't have it any other way. Today's Discovery has more than a hint of the salubrious Range Rover models about its front end with the industrial mesh grille and the big square light clusters which now feature LED technology. There are more LEDs at the rear and redesigned bumpers at both ends, the front one incorporating a wider air intake to help the powerful 3.0-litre engine breathe. The tall shape is typical Land Rover with those instantly recognisable squared-off lines and clean surfaces but the designers have tried to reduce the overbearing look of the car. Some of the detailing, particularly the deep grove along the edge of the clam shell bonnet, serves to create a lower, sleeker effect. The cabin quality has been stepped up at least a couple of notches with improved materials and a simplified control interface. The Terrain Response console now takes pride of place in front of the gear lever and the steering wheel includes controls for numerous functions, reducing the amount of time drivers need to spend with a hand away from the wheel. Technology is everywhere in the latest Discovery, at least it will be if you have the cash for a posh trim level and a trawl through the options list. The various systems are controlled via the centrally-mounted touch screen display and the driver gets a second LCD display mounted in the instrument cluster through which major functions can be accessed via the steering wheel-mounted controls. The Portable Audio Interface allows all manner of MP3 players and USB devices to be connected and there's a DAB radio option for your listening pleasure. The clever front headlights incorporate a High Beam Assist function that activates the full beam headlights when light levels are suitably low. It then detects the lights of oncoming vehicles and dips the beam when necessary to avoid dazzling other drivers. There's a Surround Camera System consisting of five cameras that give a near 360-degree view around the vehicle on the central display screen. This is designed to help with tricky parking manoeuvres, sticky off-road situations or when hitching up a trailer. The system incorporates a dedicated Tow Assist Function which gives a wide angle view of any trailer on the screen and shows its trajectory if the current steering angle is maintained. It's accuracy can be ensured by feeding the trailer's vital statistics into the computer. Land Rover doesn't manufacturer vehicles that are inherently environmentally friendly but the engines in the latest Discovery make the best of a difficult job. The 3.0-litre diesel's more advanced technology helps it eclipse the economy and emissions to the 2.7-litre engine when it's fitted with the automatic gearbox. It returns around 30mpg on the combined cycle and emissions of 244g/km. Land Rover has also incorporated a number of other features into the Discovery designed to improve economy. They're bundled together under the e_Terrain banner and include the Intelligent Power System which recharges the battery only when it's most efficient to do so, an energy-saving air-conditioning pump and numerous aerodynamic improvements. Most big 4x4s make very little sense if you plan to drive them solely on tarmac. Most of the time you'd be better served with a decent full-sized saloon or MPV if you need space and great ride quality. The Land Rover Discovery has been so good it almost warrants recommendation regardless of its ability in the mud but it's when you put it through its paces in properly extreme terrain that the genius - and that's not a word to be used lightly - in its design becomes apparent.
Land Rover Range Rover Sport TDV8 : EXTREME SPORT

Car And Driving - Land Rover has put a seriously punchy diesel in the Range Rover Sport. Andy Enright reportsThough it sold well, there was one thing that the original Range Rover Sport needed. A more powerful diesel. The TDV6 that was originally on offer was a worthy unit but other competitors offered more grunt. Hence the importance in the latest range of the TDV8 version we're looking at here. Though the TDV6 continues, its more powerful 3.6-litre stablemate gives the range a worthy diesel flagship. With the TDV8, the modest 188bhp of the 2.7-litre TDV6 was transformed into a lusty 272bhp with the addition of another couple of cylinders and a big injection of attitude. This powerplant dwarfs that of the Mercedes ML320CDI (221bhp), the BMW X5 3.0d (231bhp) and the Audi Q7 3.0TDI (230bhp). It's also an installation that's more befitting of a vehicle that needs a truly imperious engine. Although the Sport is, in effect, the diffusion line of the Range Rover sub-brand, it's still perceived as a prestige choice. The TDV6 continues as an entry-level choice but the V8 is a far more desirable piece of engineering. Eight cylinders are always a good start and the Range Rover Sport makes the most of its octet of oil-squashing pots. It's more than just the TDV6 plus two. Compared with that engine, it's 42 per cent more powerful, delivers 45 per cent more torque but, crucially, offers similar fuel economy. As you'd expect with that sort of power gain, acceleration is vastly improved, slashing the sprint to 60mph to 8.6 seconds and giving a top speed capability of 124mph - easily enough for high-speed intercontinental ballistic cruising. Refinement has been improved too. The TDV8 is claimed to be significantly quieter overall and you won't need to rev it until its valves bounce because the almost obscene torque figure of 640Nm comes on stream from just 2,000rpm. Fully 500Nm of torque is on offer between 1,500 and 3,700rpm, giving the Sport real `step off' ability - handy if you need to put a move on someone away from the lights. "The Sport badge looks a little incongruous on the back of the TDV6. The TDV8 has no such self consciousness"This means that acceleration feels effortless. The 12.7 second sprint to 60mph of the TDV6 wasn't premier league standard and the midrange performance has been transformed. The engine exceeds Euro4 emissions standards and a combined fuel economy figure of 25.5mpg is a decent return for such a sizeable and swift hunk of automotive real estate. Many will labour under the misapprehension that this powerplant is the TDV6 with a couple of extra cylinders grafted onto the end but it's far from it. Whereas the six-cylinder V6 has a bank angle of 60 degrees between the two sets of cylinders, the V8 has a 90-degree angle which is often regarded as the most efficient configuration of an eight-cylinder engine's balance and refinement. Displacing 3.6-litres, the TDV8 uses a revolutionary Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) engine block that offers better fatigue strength than aluminium with less weight than a `standard grey' iron casting. Now that the Sport is becoming a familiar sight on British roads it's clear what a deft piece of styling it represents. Although some were a little dismayed at first that the look was so restrained, this shape has more legs than a more extreme design. The wheelarches are subtly flared, thin side vents sit behind the front wheels and there's a sharp swage line that runs along the car's hips. The windscreen is sharply raked back and the perforated front grille looks like a set of expensive kitchen knives. It's also a landmark vehicle for a company with a whole lot more autonomy. Just five years ago, Land Rover could never have built a car of this kind. Their owners at the time (BMW) didn't want a sports crossover vehicle like this poaching sales from their all-conquering X5. It was only as recently as 2000 that plans were first laid for a chassis platform that would spawn two very different vehicles. The first was the Discovery3 and the second was this, the Range Rover Sport. Both ride on a monocoque chassis and double wishbone suspension that offers far better on-road ride and handling than any previous Land Rover product. As you might expect, the Range Rover Sport features a much more focused set up than the Disco. The steering rack has been replaced by a quicker item, offering more road feedback and quicker Reponses. To help cut the pitch and roll that quick changes of direction tend to generate, Land Rover have also upgraded the springs and dampers and lowered the car's roll centre. Perhaps the most innovative feature of the Sport's underpinnings is Dynamic Response, a set of anti-roll bars that can be engaged or decoupled according to demand. Standard on the flagship supercharged model and an option on the other models in the range, Dynamic Response also decouples when offroading in order to allow greater wheel articulation. Under normal conditions, drive is split 50:50 between the front and rear axles, although it can instantaneously switch according to demand. The Sport also gets the Terrain Response system first seen in the Discovery3. This is virtually akin to having an expert sitting alongside you, helping to get the best out of the vehicle, on or off road. The driver chooses one of five terrain settings via a rotary knob mounted on the centre console. There's a general driving programme plus one for slippery conditions (dubbed `grass/gravel/snow') and three specialist off road modes (mud/ruts, sand, rock crawl). The system will then automatically select the optimum setup for the electronic controls and the traction aids. This encompasses ride height, torque response, hill descent control, electronic traction control and transmission settings. If you want a Range Rover Sport, then you probably want a diesel version and if so, then it's probably worth stretching to this TDV8 version. Compare equivalent variants and you're looking at a model-for-model premium of around £6,000 to get an engine much better suited to power such an aggressive-looking SUV.Facts At A Glance CAR: Range Rover Sport TDV8 PRICE: £56,995 - on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 16 CO2 EMISSIONS: 294g/km PERFORMANCE: 0-60mph 8.6s / Max Speed 130mph FUEL CONSUMPTION: (urban) 19.3mpg / (extra urban) 31.4mpg / (combined) 25.5mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front and side airbags, ABS, ETC, EBA, DSC WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Height 4695/1915/1891mm

Land Rover Range Rover Sport : AWFULLY VERSATILE

Car And Driving - With its more dynamic outlook, the Range Rover Sport might be the true all-terrain vehicle. Steve Walker reports.Land Rover's Range Rover is a lot of things but sporty? The towering luxury off-roader is far too posh to press-on down a twisting B-road: it rewards much more sedate progress. That doesn't mean car buyers seeking a plush 4x4 that's also light on its feet need to turn their backs on the Land Rover stable. In the Range Rover Sport, the marque has a product that combines the Range Rover's imposing looks and dauntless off-road ability with a bit of extra hustle.Beneath the skin, the Range Rover Sport owes more to the Discovery than to the imperious Range Rover. Both ride on a monocoque chassis and double wishbone suspension that offers far better on-road ride and handling than any previous Land Rover products could lay claim to. It's also a considerably more affordable proposition than the Range Rover, occupying a perch in the Land Rover model hierarchy between its posh big brother and the more family-focused Discovery. In market terms, the Range Rover Sport locks horns with the lesser versions of luxury 4x4s like BMW's X5, Audi's Q7 and the Mercedes M-Class, leaving the Range Rover free to face down the sector's biggest guns. Today's Range Rover Sport has a better chance than ever of doing a number on the premium brand competition, thanks in the main to its latest engines. The famous British brand no longer has to play second fiddle to its Teutonic rivals in the engineering department, with the 242bhp 3.0-litre twin turbo diesel, the familiar 3.6-litre TDV8 diesel and the 503bhp 5.0-litre supercharged petrol units on its books. Both were developed in-house in partnership with Jaguar. The diesel uses sequential turbochargers to provide a smooth flow of power and torque from low down in the rev range delivering a huge 500Nm from idle and 600Nm by the time it gets into its stride. The petrol option pumps our 625Nm with the aid of its twin-vortex supercharger and advanced variable camshaft timing system. Both must now rank amongst the best powerplants of their type in the world."If you're after a car that really can deliver excitement on the road and capability off it, the Range Rover Sport is a decent place to start."The output of the engines is fed through the Range Rover Sport's six-speed automatic gearbox which has been revised to achieve faster shifting and take advantage of the increased engine torque that's generated by the latest models. The gearbox features an intelligent Sport mode which adapts to driving styles and has wheel-mounted paddle shifters to bring an even greater level of control. The ride and handling of the car are governed by its Adaptive Dynamics system which continually optimises the settings of the adjustable dampers according to the road conditions to achieve the best possible levels of comfort and body control. Engineers have also tweaked the braking and steering systems on the latest Range Rover Sport with the aim of increasing feel and driver involvement. There isn't too much scope for changing the look of the Range Rover Sport, the car's styling operating within the confines of the highly distinctive Range Rover house style. Having said that, while the uniform lines and upright stance remain, designers have worked to inject extra drama through the detailing. The front lights now use the latest LED technology in an interlocking circle design as seen on the Range Rover. The thin grill features twin bars fashioned from aluminium mesh and an enlarged air intake in the grill below helps the engines breathe. At the rear, there are also redesigned lights and the bumpers integrate more fluently with the flanks of the car at both ends. The desired effect of a more athletic appearance for the Sport looks to have been achieved. The cabin design of the Range Rover Sport once appeared to be more closely aligned with the Discovery than the Range Rover but no longer. The dashboard still slopes down to merge with the centre console to create the trademark cockpit feel but the materials used and the clean lines of the controls have a far more upmarket effect. With high-tech infotainment systems controlled through a neat touchscreen interface, the Sport's complex systems should be more accessible. A neat display screen is also included on the instrument cluster, giving an at-a-glance rundown of key information for the driver. Whether you go for the six or eight cylinder diesels or the supercharged V8 petrol model, equipment is not in short supply at any level of the Range Rover Sport model range. Whether you go for the six or eight cylinder diesels or the supercharged V8 petrol model, equipment is not in short supply at any level of the Range Rover Sport model range. All variants get alloy wheels, Dynamic Stability Control, a diesel misfuel protection device, touch-screen hard-disc drive navigation with a 4x4 interface and voice control, a nine-speaker harman/kardon audio system, an iPod/USB connectivity module, a Bluetooth phone system, and leather seat facings. However, the most crucial single feature has to be the standard Terrain Response system. At least, it is for owners who intent to use the Range Rover Sport as its manufacturer intended. This is virtually akin to having a driving expert sitting alongside you, helping to get the best out of the vehicle, on or off road. The latest system on the Range Rover Sport also includes a Dynamic mode designed to optimise performance on the road with sharper steering and firmer suspension with enhanced body control. Land Rover has had its attention focused on environmental issues in recent times and the Range Rover Sport is reaping the benefits. The engines are very efficient for their size and power outputs and considering they're fitted to a vehicle of the Sport's size and capability. The combined fuel economy for the 3.0-litre diesel engine is over 30mpg and that comes with CO2 emissions of 243g/km. The 5.0-litre engine is predictable less thrifty with 353g/km emissions. If you're after a car that really can deliver excitement on the road and capability off it, the Range Rover Sport is a decent place to start. The car's performance and economy have been improved dramatically by the introduction of the latest engines, while alterations to the cabin have thrust it in an upmarket direction.Facts At A Glance CAR: Range Rover Sport range PRICES: £44,895-£61,995 - on the road INSURANCE GROUPS: 13-17 [est] CO2 EMISSIONS: 243-353g/km PERFORMANCE: [V8 Supercharged] Max Speed 140mph / 0-60mph 6.8s [est] FUEL CONSUMPTION: [TDV6] (urban) 23mpg / (extra urban) 37mpg / (combined) 30mpg [est] STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front and side airbags, ABS, ETC, EBA, DSC.
Land Rover Defender Range : THE DEFENDER GOES ON THE OFFENSIVE

Car And Driving - With an uprated diesel engine, the latest Defender is even more capable. Andy Enright reportsLand Rover customers are some of the most demanding and knowledgeable of any car marque. Most will put up with any kind of lifestyle stylings applied to the Freelander, Discovery and Range Rover lines as long as parent company Ford doesn't mess with the Defender, the vehicle better known to most as the definitive `Land Rover.' That wish has been granted but it hasn't stopped Land Rover from raiding the Ford empire for improved parts. The latest Defender features an improved diesel engine and gearbox and a whole host of detail improvements.Only a Luddite would claim that the changes are a retrograde step. There can certainly be no complaints about ditching the old Td5 powerplant in favour of a 2.4-litre four-cylinder diesel that offers a similar 122bhp power output but which trounces the old powerplant when it comes to torque. Where the Td5 managed a peak of 221lb/ft, the latest engine is significantly brawnier, offering up a full 265lb/ft serving. What's more, that figure is delivered at a mere 2,000rpm, with at least 232lb/ft available in a broad sweep from 1,500rpm to 2,700rpm. This means that the lugging power of your Land Rover has been markedly improved. You won't need to snatch a gear change when trying to accelerate away when towing and climbing up steep off-road inclines will require less of a run up. The boost in off-road performance is reason enough for the fitment of this engine but even the most leathery backcountry diehards won't begrudge a little more on-road refinement and driveability. The six-speed gearbox offers an even lower first ratio which can really capitalise on the improved torque while sixth gear has been stretched out to offer cruising ability which doesn't require passengers to converse via loud hailers."The real thing is now a little easier to live with"There's even an improvement to the Defender's notoriously utilitarian facia, this model now featuring a single large moulding supported on a robust steel rail. It's still not something you'd mistake for an Audi Q7 part but it is a lot better at eliminating the sort of twitters and squeaks that made the old Defender's interior sound like an audio track for Bill Oddie's Wildwatch. Instruments have been filched from the Discovery3 production line and there are numerous ergonomic advantages. A passenger side grab handle offers two-handed support during gnarly off-road manoeuvres, while there is also a lot more useable stowage. Two console options are offered: a practical open tray design that keeps contents handy or a lidded design that offers 14-litres of storage out of harms way. I'll just be hopeful that Land Rover has built a Defender that I can get in and out of without tearing a hole in my trousers on some sharp edge or catch. Improved front seats and ventilation are fitted, as well as upgraded audio systems. The in-car entertainment systems have been augmented to take advantage of Defender's improved refinement. For the first time, high-mounted tweeters are available in Defender and work in conjunction with the revised speaker installation for significantly improved clarity and sound reproduction. An auxiliary/MP3 audio input socket is also available. The facia now houses a beefed up heating and ventilation system that warms the cabin 40 per cent quicker than before and can achieve cabin temperatures a full 12°C higher. The air-conditioning system can cool the cabin in half the time of the old unit, and achieve cabin temperatures 7°C lower too. The addition of side window demist vents helps maintain visibility whatever the weather. As before, the chassis is available in three wheelbases - 90, 110 and 130 - and in both standard and heavy duty guises. A total of fourteen different body styles, including pick-ups, soft tops, crew cabs and station wagons, are available, with many more custom-built by Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations team. Examples of these include airport fire tenders, ambulances and mobile hydraulic platforms. The exterior has been changed very little, the revised bonnet profile being the only clue that this is the latest Defender. As the project's chief designer points out, "Defender's timeless exterior has become synonymous with functional design. Every line and surface seems to be linked to the vehicle's extraordinary capability, so we deliberately changed very little." It's a wise move as the basic vehicle is as popular now as it was 50 years ago. Indeed, the Ministry of Defence recently ordered nearly 9,000 of them to keep the armed forces mobile, with no rival offering anything like the value and functionality of the Defender. Even today, Land Rover shifts over 25,000 Defenders per year. In other words, it's a more successful vehicle than many people realise. As nearly everyone knows, the car was originally developed as an agricultural vehicle out of post-war necessity. Rover engineering boss Maurice Wilks wanted a 4x4 for his farm. So he built one, using aluminium rather than steel (rationed at the time). In this way the `Landy` legend was born. More than 1.5 million Land Rover vehicles have been produced since the original was launched in 1948 but all stem from that genesis. Long may it continue.Facts At A Glance CAR: Land Rover Defender range PRICES: £21,875-£25,450 - on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 10 CO2 EMISSIONS: 270-290g/km [est] PERFORMANCE: [90 Station Wagon] Max Speed 82mph / 0-60mph 15s [est] FUEL CONSUMPTION: [90 Station Wagon] [combined] 28mpg [est] WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: [90] Station Wagon Length/Width/Height mm 3922/1992/2018mm

Land Rover Defender 110 Utility Wagon : ADDED UTILITY ROOM

Car And Driving - Vans don't come any tougher than the Land Rover Defender Utility Wagon. Steve Walker reports. The mighty Land Rover Defender has many of the qualities that operators look for in a commercial vehicle. It's just about as tough as they come, built to withstand the kind of abuse that would reduce lesser 4x4s to battered shells. It's simple to use, reliable and, considering what it can do off-road, it's reasonably priced. It also benefits from low running costs which are even lower if you specify the Utility Pack that gains the Defender classification as a commercial vehicle from the tax man.As nearly everyone knows, the Defender was originally developed as an agricultural vehicle out of post-war necessity. Rover engineering boss Maurice Wilks wanted a 4x4 for his farm. So he built one, using aluminium rather than steel (rationed at the time). In this way, the `Landy` legend was born. More than 1.5 million Land Rover vehicles have been produced since the original was launched in 1948 but all stem from that genesis. Unlike most other vehicles with a bloodline even half as long as the Defender's, the links between the first massed produced versions and the products in showrooms today are clear to see. The latest Defender engine is a 2.4-litre diesel tuned to pump out the kind of low-down muscle that owners who routinely find themselves up to their axles in mud tend to like. The 122bhp power output doesn't sound like much in a vehicle that can take a 1,000kg payload on board but torque of 359Nm is created between 1,500 and 2,700rpm giving the Defender the strength it needs. Even in its latest form, the vehicle is compromised on the road. It's noisier and feels less stable in corners than other 4x4 vans. The flipside of this, and the reason why so many operators who need to travel off-road wouldn't countenance anything else, is the vehicle's legendary ability in the rough."Land Rover's Defender has become something of an institution with owners who like to give their vehicles a very hard time"With its robust 4x4 system, low range gearbox and lockable differentials, the Defender is one of the best off-road tools in the business. Big ground clearance and comprehensive protection for the underside, for occasions when the available space underneath isn't enough, makes getting stuck less likely than in almost anything else. It's the Utility Pack, a no cost option on the 110 version of the Defender, that turns it into a Utility Wagon commercial vehicle. The rear side windows are replaced by panelled sides but the rear seats remain making this a van with five-seat capacity and potential for use outside of working hours. The latest Defender is less creeky in the cabin than the previous model but it's still hardly the last word in refinement and few concessions are made to aesthetics. What it is, is tough, the sort of vehicle that operators can dole out the harshest treatment to only to have it keep coming back for more. Two options are offered for the console between the seats: a practical open tray design that keeps contents handy or a lidded design that offers 14-litres of storage out of harm's way. Improved front seats and ventilation are fitted to today's cars, as well as upgraded audio systems. The Defender should prove affordable to run. Even if economy will be quite a shock at just 25mpg, the proven mechanicals should be nothing if not reliable. Repair costs are reasonable and long service intervals will also be popular with operators who need their vehicles on the road as much as possible. The Utility Pack can only be ordered in the Defender's 110 wheelbase but there's a choice of all three trim levels for operators to get their teeth into. Standard, Country and XS models are available and due to the vehicle's classification as a commercial vehicle, buyers can reclaim the VAT on the purchase price. There are further advantages where the company car tax system is concerned with users paying less for this five-seat vehicle than they would for a car of similar capacity. Land Rover's Defender has become something of an institution with owners who like to give their vehicles a very hard time and the Utility Wagon version brings its inherent durability and off-road prowess to commercial vehicle customers. A payload of over 1,000kg qualifies the Utility wagon for commercial vehicle status with the tax man, making it an even more cost effective option for businesses. The Defender remains a little rough around the edges but you can't put a price on its ability when it comes to not letting you down. You've really got to spend a significant amount of time driving off-road to justify a Defender Utility Wagon. There are other 4x4 van options at this price point that are far more comfortable and refined on the road. Few come close to the Defender when the going gets tough however and in really testing off-road scenarios, there's nothing better.Facts At A Glance MANUFACTURER: Land Rover MODEL: Defender Utility Wagon BHP: 122bhp PAYLOAD CAPACITY: 1,009kg LOAD VOLUME: N/A GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT: 3050kg LENGTH: 4639mm WIDTH: 1790mm HEIGHT: 2021mm June 12th 2009

Land Rover Range Rover : TOP OF THE RANGE

Car And Driving - There's no mistaking the Range Rover. Steve Walker reports.Having single-handedly laid the foundations for the modern luxury 4x4 sector, Land Rover's Range Rover assumed ownership of its own personal area of the market and has stood astride it like a colossus ever since. Rivals have tried to topple the icon but while some have experienced success in certain areas, none have truly eclipsed the Range Rover's unique blend of capability and class. With the latest version, Land Rover is looking to push its flagship that bit further out of reach. It's all very well having a market leading product but questions need to be asked if the market it's leading is in a terminal nose dive. Nobody would suggest that such a situation is facing the luxury 4x4 sector yet, but few would disagree that change is needed if these monsters of the passenger car world are to remain relevant going forward. It might well be the next generation Range Rover that brings us real strides in a more environmentally-sound direction but indications are there in the promotional material for this heavily revised 2010 model year car that the marque is attempting to tread more softly. A V8-only engine range isn't going to get the Range Rover installed on the Greenpeace Christmas card list but the latest engines both give more than a nod to matters of efficiency. The installation of the 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine developed in house at Jaguar Land Rover is a major boost for the Range Rover. It's quite a piece of engineering and it's British, which should still count for something with customers. With 503bhp, this supercharged, direct injection engine isn't backward in going forward and there's torque of 625Nm for all that towing and off-roading that the Range Rover set are inclined to do. The alternative engine is a diesel with more modest costs and capabilities. The 3.6-litre TDV8 produces 268bhp and like the petrol engine, it's matched to a six-speed automatic gearbox."The Range Rover is stronger than ever in its latest guise"The Range Rover has long been a master when it comes to getting its occupants across their chosen terrain with consummate assurance and comfort. The latest model aims to take things to the next level with its Adaptive Dynamics system. Sensors monitor the dampers on each wheel 500 times per second to predict the optimum body and ride control settings for the driver's style and the terrain. The Terrain Response off-road driving system features a `Sand Launch Control' function for those days at the beach while the Rock Crawl Program has revisions to help tackle boulder-strewn river beds. There's also a Gradient Release Control function for the Hill Descent Control System that lowers the Range Rover over precipitous descents in a more ginger fashion that passengers will appreciate. No other vehicle takes this much pride in going where it probably shouldn't. This is the latest revised Range Rover but how will we mere mortals know that when it whooshes by. The headlights are shallower and the fog lights have been relocated from the bumper to the air-intake below. Taking pride of place is a deeper grille with crisp metal louvers in front of a heavy duty aluminium mesh. It looks liable to process anything that strays into the Range Rover's path into pieces roughly the size of McCain Oven Chips but we're told that pedestrian safety is an integral part of this model's design. The cabin looks as classy and cosseting as ever with its clean, elegant controls and high quality materials. The big seats look the ideal place to sit out big journeys and there's a host of technological gadgetry built in. The instruments are in the usual place but they aren't real instruments in the manner that we're used to. The Range Rover replaces the traditional speedo and rev-counter clocks with digital facsimiles of the same projected on a 12" wide TFT screen. In normal mode, you'd have to look twice to verify that anything was amiss as the display looks conventional but at the touch of a button, the area between the `virtual' dials can be customised to show anything from the outside temperature to navigation information, telephone system settings or wheel articulation. Controls on the steering wheel like those of a games console controller can be used to adjust the various functions without recourse to the main touch screen display at the centre of the dash. A huge range of high tech and highly priced options is available for Range Rover customers to pimp their rides. The Autobiography model is where it's really at for those seeking a truly bespoke feel and here it's possible to select from a catalogue of leathers and wood finishes to adorn the car's cabin. It's no surprise that the Range Rover will continue to campaign at the top end of the luxury 4x4 market against the same cars that have tried and failed to eclipse it in the past. The likes of BMW's X5, Audi's Q7 and Porsche's Cayenne are going to have a tougher fight than ever on their hands. We're fed a lot of information about the Range Rover's lightweight construction and the efficiency of its engines but the car's only ever going to be light and efficient for a full-size luxury 4x4 weighing not far shy of three tonnes. The V8 petrol engine emits 348g/km of CO2 which is a seven per cent improvement over the old range-topping V8 while the diesel alternative pumps out close to 300g/km. Land Rover is showing willing but there's some way still to go. The Range Rover is stronger than ever in its latest guise, still imperious, instantly recognisable and the king of the luxury SUVs. Enhanced engine technology addresses the running costs and environmental issues that have threatened to spoil the big 4x4 party but there's only so much that can be done with a vehicle matching the Range Rover's description. The looks have been sharpened up, particularly around the front end, and the cabin is plusher than ever. Performance from the latest 5.0 V8 petrol engine is a major improvement and if you want to undertake serious off-road driving, the Range Rover will remain one of the very best there is at any price.Facts At A Glance CAR: Range Rover PRICES: £64,695-£79,995 - on the road INSURANCE GROUPS: 16-18 [est] CO2 EMISSIONS: 300-348g/km [est] PERFORMANCE: [TDV8] 0-60mph 8.5s / Max Speed 124mph [est] FUEL CONSUMPTION: [TD V8] (urban) 19.6mpg / (extra urban) 31.2mpg / (combined) 25.1mpg [est] STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front and side airbags, ABS, ESP [est] WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Height 4950/1863/1863mm [est]

Land Rover Freelander 2 : FREE TAKE TWO

Car And Driving - The Land Rover Freelander 2 aims to redefine the compact 4x4 market with a blend of quality and capability that the opposition are powerless to match. Jonathan Crouch reportsRecommending a compact 4x4 isn't an easy task. If you're in the market for a car like this, there's every chance you're going to be rather label conscious. As good as the latest Japanese offerings may be, a good quantity of buyers won't look beyond Land Rover's Freelander. In the past, this meant buying a car that was rather average, later rising to class competitive at best. No longer. The Freelander 2 has established its brand as the premium choice, no matter what 4x4 sector you're shopping ion.The shape is instantly familiar, albeit one which looks as if vehicular geneticists have artificially inseminated a Freelander with some purebred Range Rover DNA. The MK1 Freelander was one of those rare exceptions - a vehicle that just got better and better looking throughout its lifetime and the second generation car has upped the ante again. Whilst it retains the chunky good looks, Land Rover has imbued it with a far more premium look and feel, which is just as well as the entry level price has increased to well over the £20,000 mark. These days, all Freelanders come with TD4_e diesel power - and the brand's eco-friendly Stop/Start system to drive down its operating costs. Such technology is becoming increasingly widespread in production cars and Land Rover's take on it couldn't be easier to use. The idea of a car's engine cutting out and restarting again as it sees fit might be disconcerting for some but in the Freelander, the driver retains some control. When the vehicle is stationary and the gearbox is in neutral, releasing the clutch stops the engine. When it's time to pull away, simply depress the clutch and it restarts. It means that the TD4_e Freelander becomes a zero emissions vehicle while other cars are still chugging away at the traffic lights or waiting for a traffic jam to move. The Stop/Start system is turned on automatically when the ignition is turned on but can be deactivated by the driver at the flick of a switch."Big, clever, good looking and built in the UK, this is one car that we can all get behind…"The fact that we're headlining this Freelander test with talk about emissions rather than off roading says a lot about the world we now live in - and the current market. But of course, there is much more to the car than that. Let's talk about Land Rover's excellent Terrain Response system, standard on all but the entry-level model. This allows the driver to select what sort of off-road conditions the car is experiencing via a rotary knob on the dashboard and the car's electronics work out how best to dole out power and maximise traction, turning the Freelander 2 into a far more capable off-road tool. There's still no low range transfer case, which may scrub the Freelander 2 from the shortlists of those who want something really rough and ready, but this car comes up with a number of other ways to get you out of a tight spot. A full-time intelligent 4x4 system is based around a sophisticated Haldex centre differential which helps keep economy manageable on road while a sophisticated Gradient Release Control system is a logical extension of the old Hill Descent Control system for descending steep and slippery slopes. Although the shape may be familiar, you get more Freelander for your money in second generation form. It's 50mm longer, 109mm wider and 32mm taller than the first generation version but the wheels have been moved further towards each corner, freeing up another 105mm in the car's wheelbase, making rear seat accommodation a whole lot better. Weight has crept up a whopping 250kg to around 1770kg in the process but a parallel improvement in safety, refinement and quality is a transaction most customers will be willing to accept. Under the bonnet, as we've said, lies a four-cylinder common-rail diesel engine which puts out 160PS. The TD4_e modifications have seen it re-mapped for optimum efficiency but this has been achieved without cutting power or torque. A gear shift indicator has also been installed which prompts the driver to select the most appropriate gear to maximise economy and lower emissions. Finally, the Freelander's tyres are special low rolling resistance items which reduce friction on the road surface. Some may question how these will impact on the standard Freelander's impressive off-road traction but it's the car's economy figure that will be of most interest to buyers and the tyres contribute significantly to it. Owners can now expect to get 41.3mpg on the combined cycle, a respectable saving over the 37.7mpg showing the Freelander2 TD4 achieved when it was first launched. At the same time, emissions are pitched at 179g/km (used to be 194g/km). It's not enough to promote the Freelander to the ranks of the most efficient family vehicles on the market but considering its size and by the standards set by other compact 4x4s, it's now a respectable performer. Big, clever, good looking and built in the UK, this is one car that we can all get behind and be proud of. There may be elements of France, America and Sweden in this car's makeup but it could only have ever been produced using the expertise of home-grown talent. Overall, the Freelander continues to redefine exactly what a compact 4x4 should be.Facts At A Glance CAR: Land Rover Freelander range PRICES: £21,295-£32,595 - on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 11-13 CO2 EMISSIONS: 179g/km PERFORMANCE: Max Speed 112mph / 0-60mph 10.9s FUEL CONSUMPTION: (combined) 41.3mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Seven airbags, anti lock brakes, ESP WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Heightmm 4500/2180/1740

Land Rover Freelander TD4_e : ECONOMY UNDERSCORED

Car And Driving - Land Rover's mission to rehabilitate the 4x4's environmental reputation begins with the Freelander TD4_e. Steve Walker reports.A series of revisions made to the standard diesel Freelander has resulted in Land Rover's Freelander TD4_e. Stop/Start technology, a gear shift indicator, low rolling resistance tyres and numerous other arcane tweaks enables this model to achieve 41mpg on the combined cycle and 179g/km CO2 emissions. Not groundbreaking stuff but a step in the right direction.Recently mainstream car manufacturers have rushed to produce green standard-bearer models that can be wheeled out when their commitment to forestalling our planet's demise is called into question. If any manufacturer needed just such a vehicle, it was Land Rover. The British marque's product range is bristling with hefty 4x4s powered by big, thirsty engines but now there's also an environmental saviour in its midst. Next time a band of beardy environmentalists descend on a Land Rover dealership with their angry placards and carbon neutral sandals intent on chaining themselves to the nearest Range Rover V8, the sales manager will be able to calmly invite them inside for a Fair Trade coffee and pacify them with the Freelander TD4_e. 4x4 vehicles have had a bad press where green issues are concerned and as a producer of nothing but 4x4 vehicles, Land Rover had begun to look somewhat vulnerable as a result. The British marque hit back and after impressing commentators with its environmentally-focused Land_e and LXR concept cars, it pulled the covers from The Freelander TD4_e production model that brings a collection of low emissions technologies to customers. The headline-grabbing feature in the TD4_e Freelander is its intelligent Stop/Start system. Such technology is becoming increasingly widespread in production cars and Land Rover's take on it couldn't be easier to use. The idea of a car's engine cutting out and restarting again as it sees fit might be disconcerting for some but in the Freelander, the driver retains some control. When the vehicle is stationary and the gearbox is in neutral, releasing the clutch stops the engine."The Freelander TD4_e is a useful step on the road to a greener future for the brand…."When it's time to pull away, simply depress the clutch and it restarts. It means that the TD4_e Freelander becomes a zero emissions vehicle while other cars are still chugging away at the traffic lights or waiting for a traffic jam to move. The Stop/Start system is turned on automatically when the ignition is turned on but can be deactivated by the driver at the flick of a switch. As its name suggests, the TD4_e uses the 2.2-litre TD4 diesel engine from the standard Freelander range but a series of modifications have been made to boost its economy. The four-cylinder common-rail diesel engine has been re-mapped in the TD4_e for optimum efficiency but this has been achieved without cutting power or torque. A gear shift indicator has also been installed which prompts the driver to select the most appropriate gear to maximise economy and lower emissions. Finally, the Freelander's tyres are special low rolling resistance items which reduce friction on the road surface. Some may question how these will impact on the standard Freelander's impressive off-road traction but it's the TD4_e economy figure that will be of most interest to buyers and the tyres contribute significantly to it. Externally, there's little to point to the environmental qualities of the TD4_e and that might deter those who like to crow about their personal battle against global warming. The styling is conventional Freelander and, as a result, one of the most handsome compact 4x4 shapes around. The links to the Discovery couldn't be clearer but the Freelander has a lower, more pugnacious stance than its family-sized relative. Compared to the first generation Freelander, this MK2 model is 50mm longer, 109mm wider and 32mm taller but the wheels have been moved further towards each corner, freeing up another 105mm in the car's wheelbase and making rear seat accommodation a whole lot better. Weight has crept up to over 1,900kg in the process but a parallel improvement in safety and refinement is a transaction most customers will be willing to accept. The interior is a somewhat unusual mix of very high quality materials with some surprisingly cheap plastics. The environmental angle adopted by the Freelander TD4_e should give it an edge with buyers sensitive to the way that 4x4 vehicles used primarily around town are perceived. Where other manufacturers can look elsewhere for their profits, Land Rover doesn't really have anywhere else to go and so it's in the brand's interests to peruse the green direction in an attempt to shed the polluting image that 4x4s are saddled with, often unfairly. The technologies and modifications employed by the TD4_e model enable it to return 41.3mpg on the combined cycle, a respectable saving compared to the 37.7mpg you get with the standard TD4. At the same time, emissions are reduced from 194g/km to 179g/km. It's not enough to promote the Freelander to the ranks of the most efficient family vehicles on the market but considering its size and by the standards set by other compact 4x4s, it's a respectable performer. Land Rover needs to improve its environmental image and the Freelander TD4_e is a useful step on the road to a greener future for the brand. The car follows the lead of other manufacturers in utilising a package of modifications that together, have a useful impact on its economy and emissions. Stop/Start technology will generate the column inches but the low rolling resistance tyres and other features all assist the Freelander to its 41mpg combined economy figure. 4x4s do get a bad press when it comes to environmental issues but if Land Rover is to continue to prosper in the future, it will need to be at the forefront of giving its specialist market sector a greener image.
