Lotus Elise Range : BASIC INSTINCT

Car And Driving - As a template for the modern sports car, nothing beats the Lotus Elise. Andy Enright explains whyFirst, some backstory. When it was first launched back in August 1996 as an entry-level model to a range which at that point consisted solely of the ageing Esprit, few realised quite what a landmark sports car the Elise would become, especially as it followed hot on the heels of the commercial flop that was the Elan. Using a Rover 1.8-litre four-cylinder K Series engine, it was made of glass fibre and featured a bonded aluminium chassis. The back to basics approach was an instant hit and for the next five years across a wide range of subtly different versions, the Elise racked up some very respectable sales. An all-new Elise line up was announced for the 2001 model year with sleeker styling and some modifications to the engine and suspension. With the implosion of the MG Rover Group, Lotus lost its supplies of K-Series engines but the firm was already well placed with a longstanding business relationship with Toyota. The current Elise line up is powered exclusively by Toyota powerplants and makes as much sense, and maybe more, today as it did in 1996. Whichever Elise variant you opt for, there are certain constants in the driving experience. Excellent vehicle dynamics come courtesy of some of the best chassis engineers in the business. Low mass spells fantastic agility. The last nuances of suspension castor, toe, camber and tyre sidewall stiffness have all been agonised over so that you don't have to. You'll appreciate the way the steering never feels heavy but always tells you exactly what the front tyre contact patch is doing. Unlike earlier Elise models, the pedals are now perfectly spaced for flamboyant footwork. Even prodigiously talented rivals, a Porsche 911 for instance, feels lardy and artificial in comparison. Performance depends on quite how much horsepower is being generated. Even the entry-level 134bhp Elise S will get from standstill to 60mph in just 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 127mph is also attainable. The 189bhp Elise R is quicker still. Finally, just 4.4 seconds is all the 0-60mph sprint will detain the supercharged 217bhp Elise SC for and it will be blasting through 100mph before the clock has ticked much past 10.5s."…more than a decade years after its initial launch, it's still the undisputed pick of the lightweight roadsters"Lotus enjoys an efficient feedback loop with its owners and now that the Elise has been in series production for quite some time, many of the teething issues that afflicted earlier cars have been well and truly ironed out. One thing's for sure. If you can't rely on a Toyota-built engine, you can't rely on anything in the automotive world. Metronomic reliability is a virtual given where the Japanese firm is concerned and the 1.8-litre VVT-i engine is in a relatively modest state of tune which should also help to prolong its already enviable durability. The extruded and bonded aluminium chassis is still a thing of beauty, albeit a little more concealed by mats and panelling than in earlier cars. A lightweight steel rear subframe helps with weight distribution and Lotus claim a torsional rigidity of 9,500Nm per degree, making the old car's superstructure seem like a bit of a noodle. The styling of the second generation Elise has also worn extremely well given that it's been with us since 2001. Space and versatility have never been Elise keywords but the `federalised' dashboard that the latest cars adopt has a little more oddment stowage than before. Look at the Lotus price lists and you'll be bamboozled by all manner of packs for the Elise models. These tend to change in rather rapid order, but to all intents and purposes there are three Elise models - the entry-level S, the midrange R and the range-topping SC. Prices are no longer the conspicuous bargains they once were and you'll need to budget from around £25,000 to witness your name on the V5 document. Equipment levels aren't judged in the way we'd normally judge equipment levels. Instead of talking about stereos, cup holders, electric seats and so on, let's take a look at what you get with the Elise S. Look at the bits that really count. The brakes feature AP Racing callipers at the front and Brembo clamps at the back, linked to 282mm vented and cross drilled discs. Lotus has engineered one of the world's most subtle anti-lock braking systems as well. Rather than a manic juddering of the middle pedal when you get a little enthusiastic in the braking zone, you'll only feel a distant pulsing as the system unobtrusively and efficiently does its stuff. A drive by wire throttle is also featured. What's so clever about the Elise is that it manages to offer a sensible level of safety provision without dulling the car's edge noticeably. Cost of ownership is where the Elise scores big. Again, the entry-level Elise S is the best exemplar. Excellent fuel economy and low emissions are corollaries of the 860kg weight (by contrast, a modern MX-5 tips the scales at nearly 1,100kg). Lotus founder Colin Chapman would have approved. He would also have endorsed the way that this car holds its value. The most recent figures suggest that after 12 months/10,000 miles, your Elise will still be worth 82% of what you paid for it. Not that we should be evaluating any Lotus in such cold, boring terms. This one, after all, is the finest car the company has yet produced. A combined fuel economy figure for the S model of 37mpg is a fantastic return for a car that's quicker to 60mph than a Porsche Cayman. The 179g/km emissions figure isn't bad either. Another benefit of the Elise's light weight is that it doesn't eat through tyres, degrade its brakes or destroy shock absorbers in the way an enthusiastically driven heavier vehicle will. The Toyota engines have proven extremely durable (no great surprises there) with lower servicing overheads than the old Rover K Series lump. Insurance for all Elise models is rated at Group 20. The Elise is a surprisingly easy car to take for granted but one only has to look at how, more than a decade years after its initial launch, it's still the undisputed pick of the lightweight roadsters to gauge the scale of Lotus' achievements. The entry-level car is always the one which is the definitive model and the Elise S is probably the pick of the bunch. If you want excitement and a premium badge without huge running costs, this model still represents the class standard. Of course there will be some who can't resist the opportunity to go supercar baiting and for these customers, the Elise R and the supercharged SC will perform that function brilliantly. Thing is, the ability of the Elise is no great secret and few Porsche, Ferrari or Lamborghini owners would back their odds against a top-line Elise on a track day. Working smarter not harder is a good maxim to live life by. It's served the Elise very well and makes this Lotus ever more relevant.Facts At A Glance CAR: Lotus Elise range PRICES: £25,712-£32,067 - on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 20 CO2 EMISSIONS: 179-199g/km PERFORMANCE: [Elise S] Max Speed 127mph / 0-60mph 5.7s FUEL CONSUMPTION: [Elise S] (urban) 26.6mpg / (extra urban) 48.7mpg / (combined) 37.2mpg WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Widthmm 3785/1719/1117mm

Lotus Exige S : S EXPRESS

Car And Driving - Lotus bills the latest Exige S as one of their most radical production models to date. Jonathan Crouch reports`Add more power and you'll be faster on the straights. Lose more weight and you'll be faster everywhere'. The words are from the late, great Colin Chapman, founder of Lotus Cars. And it's hard to think of a car that more aptly puts his thinking into practice than the latest Lotus Exige. The lightweight Exige has one of the highest specific power outputs of any globally emissions certified car and 133hp per litre is a perfect demonstration of Chapman's philosophy of performance through light weight and of Lotus' relentless pursuit of efficiency. The same technology that makes a lightweight car a high performer also makes it efficient - how many cars have performance figures of 0-62mph in 4.77 secs but produce only 199 g/km CO2? Exactly. The Exige has been improved for the latest model year - but not beyond all recognition. There's a revised front end, a more aggressive rear wing and a more efficient engine with lower emissions and improved economy. Since the second generation Exige was launched in 2004, its power has increased from 190bhp, through 220bhp and on to 240bhp for the Performance Pack version that most customers buy. That eye-catching composite rear wing is based on the design from the Exige GT3 road car concept shown at the Geneva Motorshow in 2007. Compared to the old tailgate-mounted wing, it's 181mm wider and mounted 46mm higher and 61mm further back. It is attached to the rear bodyshell clam via rear end plates which not only increase the stiffness of the whole structure but also ensure that as much of the airflow as possible passes over the rear wing. This careful airflow management increases stability, reduces drag and, most importantly, maintains the impressive downforce figure of 42kg at 160 km/h. That might not mean much to you but the astonishing mechanical grip that this car generates at high speeds on the move certainly will. The restyled front end includes a larger, more angular air intake mouth to help funnel more air through the radiator and to improve the efficiency of the engine system. Ahead of the front wheels on either side of the main aperture, two larger air intakes increase the airflow to the twin oil coolers. Horizontal vanes bisect these oil cooler air-intakes to stabilise the airflow to further increase the cooling efficiency."The Exige S nevertheless offers a fun factor that's tough to beat at any price…."The statistics for the Exige S are impressive. It gets to 100mph in a fraction less than ten seconds, is quicker to 60mph than a Porsche 911 Turbo and within a tenth of a second of Ferrari's F430, neither of these cars having a hope of replicating the Exige's 31mpg combined fuel consumption figure. Fuel economy may not seem too much of a concern to target buyers but when you have a mere 43.5-litre fuel tank, it equates to more laps between top ups. Identifiably by its body-coloured intakes and S badging, this Exige can also be ordered with a Performance Pack which adds an extra 19bhp and a more focused approach for a £3,000 premium. As well as the power hike (which reduces the 0-62mph time to 4.5 seconds), Performance Pack buyers get 308mm front cross-drilled and vented brake discs with AP Racing four piston callipers, uprated front and rear brake pads, a full length upsized roof scoop, variable slip traction control, an uprated clutch plate and cover and launch control for those F1-style starts from the traffic lights. We especially liked the launch control system. From the driver's seat, this allows you to determine the engine revs you wish to use during a standing start. Having programmed that limit, it will not be exceeded when you then hold down the throttle and sidestep the clutch at departure from a standing start. The clutch damper cushions the severity of the clutch / transmission engagement to minimise the stresses to the drivetrain (though doing this repeated will inevitably destroy the drivetrain components). The launch control also keeps wheelspin at bay until 6mph, after which the traction control assumes its duties. As with launch control, you can dial in the amount of traction control you need from the driver's seat, altering it on the move to suit driving style and the characteristics of particular corners. The amount of traction control can be varied in over 30 increments from an optimum 7 percent tyre slip to completely off. The message display in the instrument pack displays what degree of traction control you have currently dialled in. If you're not such a hard-core Exige owner and you'd like to use your car as everyday transport, Lotus also offers an optional Touring pack that takes the edge off the car's rawest qualities and there's also a Sport pack that enhances this car's headbanger appeal without too much of an extra outlay. The Touring pack includes a full leather or `Microfibre' suede-effect interior, a leather trimmed centre console, a leather handbrake gaiter, a sound system iPod connection, full carpets with embroidered logos, auxiliary driving lights, a sound insulation kit and a cup holder. The Sport Pack runs to Bilstein sports dampers, traction control, an adjustable front anti-roll bar and a T45 roll bar with integrated harness mounts. Overall? Well, although it may be a little too focused for some, the Exige S nevertheless offers a fun factor that is tough to beat at any price.Facts At A Glance CAR: Lotus Exige S PRICE: £34,333 - on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 20 CO2 EMISSIONS: 199g/km PERFORMANCE: [Performance Pack] Max Speed 145mph / 0-60mph 4.5s FUEL CONSUMPTION: (urban) 23.9mpg / (extra urban) 44.1mpg / (combined) 33.2mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front airbags / ABS WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Heightmm 3797/1850/1159mm

Lotus Elise SC : HOME BLOWN

Car And Driving - For a long time, a Lotus Elise with more power was top of every car enthusiast's wish list. The Elise SC shows them what they've been missing. Steve Walker reports…More power, more power, more power, oh fiddlesticks we've given it too much. This cunningly devised model would give a good representation of the development cycle followed by many a performance car if the nation's car enthusiasts had their way. No matter how phenomenally rapid a vehicle is off the line, how otherworldly its top speed or how fiendishly quickly some lunatic German has bludgeoned one around the Nurburgring, there will always be those who wish it had an extra 10bhp. Leaving well enough alone is an area where Lotus has traditionally excelled but the clamour for ever more muscular versions of its classic Elise roadster went on for well over a decade. Finally, the Norfolk firm drew the line. Right after it launched the 217bhp supercharged Elise SC.By modern standards, 217bhp isn't a lot but by anyone's standards, 217bhp in a Lotus Elise is. The Elise, you see, is a Lotus and Lotus products are light. It weighs 903kg so it's got at least 300kg in the bank over your typical 200bhp hot hatchback and that adds up to supercar performance. 4.4 seconds is all the 0-60mph sprint will detain the Elise SC for and it will be blasting past 100mph before the clock has ticked much past 10.5s. All in, a 150mph top speed is not out of the question. Of course, the basic handling traits of the Elise are still in evidence. It's always been the fearsome grip and one of the most communicative steering set-ups anywhere that bring the essential joy to the Elise driving experience. Perhaps most remarkably, it's all bundled up with a forgiving ride that belies the car's hardcore capabilities. Brutally fast and rewarding on track but composed and manageable on the road, the Elise is an exemplary piece of engineering and the SC model might just be its ultimate incarnation. The acceleration is dynamite right up to 8,000rpm where that peak power output is generated but at lower engine speeds the car can be hurried along using the powerful torque from the supercharger. Depending on how you drive it, the Elise can scare you silly or display its softer side."One day soon, all performance cars will be built this way…."The mid-mounted engine is a supercharged version of the 1.8-litre VTTL-i unit that Lotus sourced from Toyota to replace the venerable Rover K-Series lump. It made its debut in the Exige, the Elise's hard-top stablemate, but modifications have been made to the version in the Elise SC. There's no intercooler for a start and that helps shed 8kg in comparison to the Exige S. It also means that the engine sits lower in the Elise so drivers can see out of the back, a luxury never afforded to Exige owners. The latest Elise models feature Probax seats that look daunting but are spookily comfortable. The dashboard is fashioned from soft-touch plastic chosen for its lightweight characteristics and the instruments are easier to read. Although certainly Spartan with its acres of exposed metalwork, the Elise interior feels modern and reasonably comfortable. Bits that could potentially break are few and far between and once you're inside, space for driver and passenger is more than adequate. The styling still looks superb all these years on, the SC models holding true to the classic lines with the exception of a subtle rear spoiler. Up against contemporary lightweight track specials, the Elise has no peers in terms of styling or practicality. Even roadsters in the same price bracket struggle to match the visual impact of the Lotus. By the time you've bought and specced your Elise SC, you're looking at around £35,000 but when you actually examine what you're getting for your money, it looks like a bit of a bargain. There are similarly priced rival products out there that can compete with the performance and handling of the Lotus but that crop of Lotus Seven clones and stripped down trackday specials lack the everyday usability of an Elise. Besides, who really wants to turn up at work or the supermarket in a car that looks suspiciously like you built it yourself? The alternatives are high performance roadsters like BMW's Z4, Nissan's 370z or a Porsche Boxster. Well-appointed and capable sportscars though these are, they can't really match the raw adrenalin and pace of the Elise SC. There's no doubt that Lotus founder Colin Chapman was on to something with his "performance through lightweight" philosophy. It has been the cornerstone of the Lotus success story down the years but in the light of the current automotive industry imperative for improved fuel economy and lower emissions, it looks positively visionary. The Elise SC backs-up its thrilling performance with 33mpg fuel economy and 199g/km emissions. One day soon, all performance cars will be built this way. The Elise mechanicals have been proven to last and the plastic composite bodywork is tougher than Roman Abramovic's tax return. It's not a product that's likely to let you down having been built to take sustained abuse on the racetrack and residual values are also buoyant with the market for pre-owned Elise models thriving. Crucially, the 217bhp in the Lotus Elise SC never feels like too much and you suspect that the Elise chassis could easily cope with a little bit more. Excess though, has never been on the agenda at Lotus and once again with the Elise SC, the manufacturer has displayed an uncanny knack of getting the balance just about right. Where else do you get a similar array of qualities to those of the Lotus Elise SC? Fiendishly fast but usable on an everyday basis and with running costs that put many compact executive saloons to shame, it's a phenomenal effort from Lotus. The key is that it's all achieved not through technological overkill or monstrous bhp outputs but by keeping things simple.Facts At A Glance CAR: Lotus Elise SC PRICE: £32,067 - on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 20 CO2 EMISSIONS: 199g/km PERFORMANCE: Max Speed 150mph / 0-60mph 4.4s FUEL CONSUMPTION: (urban) 23.9mpg / (extra urban) 44.1mpg / (combined) 33.2mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Driver's Airbag / ABS WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Heightmm 3785/1719/1117mm

Lotus Elise S : BACK TO BASICS

Car And Driving - The original Elise was a car that got the fundamentals right. Subsequent models have become more sophisticated and more powerful but in the affordable S model, The Elise goes back to its roots. Andy Enright reportsThe demise of MG Rover has had a great deal of knock-on effects, not least of which is the sudden evaporation of K-Series engine supply to many manufacturers who bought these units from the now defunct company. As soon as it looked as though this mainstay of the British motoring industry was going belly up, an unseemly scuffle began amongst smaller manufacturers keen to secure alternative motive power for their wares. Some haven't fared too well and are still looking. Fortunately, Lotus forged links with Toyota and beneath the bonnet of the entry-level Elise now sits a 134bhp 1.8-litre VVT-i engine. That the Elise S is a vastly improved car compared to the original 118bhp model from 1996 is beyond doubt. Yes it is slightly bigger and a fair degree heavier but given the way legislation and buyer expectations have changed, that's excusable. Things may have changed a great deal in the intervening decade but it's worth pausing to consider what a landmark car the original was. Capable of getting to 60mph in just 5.8 seconds thanks to a weight of just 675kg, the Elise changed the way we viewed budget performance cars. With great weight distribution and an interior that was charming in its own functional way, its simple shape still looks good to this day. In 2001 we had a revision to the Elise shape that gave it a more sophisticated, upmarket look as well as suspension modifications to tame its wilder handling excesses. Engine choice was widened and the Elise became a more powerful, more expensive car - growing away from its position as the sort of car that buyers who'd grown bored of Mazda MX-5s would gravitate to. Weight has crept up to 860kg but the Elise is now a car that doesn't require quite so many sacrifices to live with."There's a purity about the Elise that's increasingly rare in this era of over sanitised and overweight cars"Lotus enjoys an efficient feedback loop with its owners and now that the Elise has been in series production for quite some time, many of the teething issues that afflicted earlier cars have been well and truly ironed out. One thing's for sure. If you can't rely on a Toyota-built engine you can't rely on anything in the automotive world. Metronomic reliability is a virtual given where the Japanese firm is concerned and the 1.8-litre VVT-i engine is in a relatively modest state of tune which should also help to prolong its already enviable durability. Despite this, it's still enough to squirt the Elise S from standstill to 60mph in just 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 128mph is also attainable. The 127lb/ft of torque isn't going to have you searching the Lotus accessories catalogue for towing hitches but when the torque to weight ratio is considered, it's not too much of a handicap. You'll feel the slight lack of muscle when attacking uphill stretches but otherwise you'll rarely feel you're wanting for power. If you do take a test drive and want a little more oomph under your right boot, you'll need to trade up to the 190bhp Elise R. The great thing about the Elise S is that you're buying a serious amount of capability for little more than the price of mainstream pretenders. Excellent fuel economy and low emissions are corollaries of the low weight (by contrast, a modern MX-5 tips the scales at nearly 1,100kg). The Lotus boss said: "The arrival of our new Elise S is good news for lovers of pure sports cars in all intended markets. The value for money proposition offered by the car is second to none and takes the wonderful Lotus Elise range back into the heart of the mainstream sports car market. The Elise is a surprisingly easy car to take for granted but one only has to look at how, ten years after launch, it's still the undisputed pick of the lightweight roadsters to gauge the scale of Lotus' achievements. The entry-level car is always the one which is the definitive model and the Elise S lifts the standard yet again. If you want excitement and a premium badge without huge running costs, the Elise still represents the class standard. Ten years on that's quite some accomplishment.Facts At A Glance CAR: Lotus Elise S PRICE: £25,712 - on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 20 CO2 EMISSIONS: 179g/km PERFORMANCE: Max Speed 128mph / 0-60mph 5.8s FUEL CONSUMPTION: (combined) 37.2mpg WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Widthmm 3717 / 1740mm
