Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S : POWER PLAY

Car And Driving - For boardroom buyers who have to have a luxury saloon but secretly want an Italian supercar, Maseratis Quattroporte Sport GT S should be just about perfect, thinks Jonathan CrouchYou dont necessarily equate the concept of a sports saloon with an automatic gearbox, even when the saloon in question is a large, luxury four-door. There are exceptions however and Maseratis desirable Quattroporte is one of them. The car has proved to be more popular for UK buyers since the option of a fully-fledged automatic 6-speed gearbox was introduced alongside the rather clunky DuoSelect sequential manual transmission used by early Quattroportes of this generation. The British boardroom has also responded quite positively to the wider trim choice that basically boils down to the driver-focused Sport GT models and the more luxury-orientated Executive GT variants. Customers graduating to the Quattroporte from Maseratis coupe models usually went for the Sport GT variants but were surprised to find that apart from gearbox software able to shift cogs 35% faster, there were no mechanical changes to this version able to provide the kind of sports driving sensation promised by the badge. This was not the kind of feedback a performance-orientated brand like Maserati could afford to ignore. Hence the introduction of the Quattroporte Sport GT S. This car does the whole sports saloon thing properly, thanks to the incorporation of a revised suspension layout, featuring single rate dampers and a "racing" set up. The car sits 10mm lower at the front and 25mm at the rear compared to other versions of the Quattroporte, and also features different, stiffer springs and dampers. The Sport GT S also boasts a unique braking system developed in collaboration with Brembo. This uses dual-cast brake discs, the first time such a set up has been employed on a road car. Unlike traditional cast iron discs, dual-cast discs are made of two materials, cast iron and aluminium, to ensure optimised braking, improving performance in the most extreme conditions and providing greater resistance to fade even at the highest temperatures. The Quattroporte Sport GT Ss new braking system also benefits from new mono-block, six-piston callipers at the front and tyres developed especially for this car (front 245/35-R20 and rear 295/30-R20). The increased size of the rear tyres allows optimum use of the Maseratis V8 power, whilst the new tyre compound helps the brakes and set-up to guarantee a higher level of handling. "If youre going to buy a luxury saloon with a serious sporting edge and real character, there arent really any better choices"The ordinary Quattroporte Sport GT model already has a pretty menacing look but on the S version, this goes up another level. Along with the black-chrome mesh front grille (a characteristic element of sporty Maseratis), the side window trims and the two double exhaust pipes are also in black, whilst door handles are in the same colour as the body of the car. You also get eye-catching dark-chrome 20", seven spoke alloy wheels. As youd expect, the choice of material for the interior of this model is intended to further reflect the car's sporty character. Traditional Poltrona Frau leather has been combined with Alcantara, which covers the central zone of the seats, the interior door panels and the steering wheel. Maserati has previously used Alcantara for the interior of the Trofeo race challenge models and the MC12 supercar. The dashboard is finished in new carbon fibre with aluminium treads, whilst front seats are characterised by a more cosseting sporty shape. Its all enough to make you feel very special indeed. On the road, the 6-speed automatic gearbox works in well with this cars performance-orientated character. Since there are no engine modifications to the Sport GT S, the performance figures are of course no different from standard variants but should still be quite enough to please most potential buyers. Expect to get to 60mph from rest in 5. 4 seconds (0.4 seconds adrift of the DuoSelect model) and run onto a top speed of 167mph. Out on a race track, itll feel a little less alert but this is a Quattroporte, a car that likes to get its hustle on when blatting cross country on big roads, the 400bhp 4.2-litre V8 engine singing a magnificent baritone. Despite the GT S changes, point and squirt is still not this Maseratis forte. This car is seriously lengthy. Measuring over five metres from tip to tail, the Maserati is longer than a BMW 7 Series, wider than a Mercedes S Class yet lower than a Jaguar XJ. The chassis is a clean sheet design with a classic longitudinally-mounted engine driving the rear wheels. The engine in question is a development of the powerplant found in the Maserati Coupe and cranks out a hefty 400bhp. The power delivery has been optimised for smooth low end torque rather than all-out top end power and the engine features a combination of classic race-derived design such as the dry sump lubrication system and the chain driven twin overhead cams, plus high-tech touches such as the CAN (Controlled Area Network) electronics system. As you might expect, running a Maserati Quattroporte isnt a job for the terminally short of cash. Maserati quotes a rather optimistic combined fuel consumption figure of 19. 2mpg for this automatic version but most drivers will typically see low teens for the car. That said, the ZF gearbox allows for relatively relaxed high-speed cruising which gives the car a decent range. Insurance is straight in at Group 20 although this is par for the course for this sort of model and its possible to find insurers who will look upon the Quattroporte more favourably than they would a BMW M5 or a Mercedes CLS 63 AMG. I doubt too many who hanker after a car like this will be overly worried about carbon dioxide emissions, but the Quattroporte GT S with its automatic gearbox emits 345g/km, which is surprisingly significantly better than the manual DuoSelect model which chugs out 370g/km. Depreciation is not the nightmare that many would expect, the Quattroporte having established a strong reputation in the used market. If youre going to buy a luxury saloon with a serious sporting edge and real character, there arent really any better choices than this Quattroporte. If youre going to buy the Sport GT variant (in which case, Im very envious), dont until youve tried this model.FACTS AT A GLANCE CAR: Maserati Quattroporte GT S PRICE: £85,000 [est] on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 20 CO2 EMISSIONS: 345g/km PERFORMANCE: 0-60mph 5.4s / Max Speed 167mph FUEL CONSUMPTION: (urban) 12.9 (extra urban) 26.9 (combined) 19.2mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front, side and curtain airbags, ABS, stability and traction control, ISOFIX child seat fixings WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Heightmm 5052/1895/1438mm

Maserati GranSport (2004 - 2007) : GRAN STANDING

Car And Driving - Models Covered: (2 dr coupe 2 dr Spyder 4.2 petrol)BY ANDY ENRIGHTWith Maserati having moved to the mellower Quattroporte platform for its latest GT, the GranSport is as focused as the trident gets for the time being. Used examples offer a Ferrari sense of occasion for Porsche prices. Make sure the car in question has been meticulously maintained. As the last of the 3200/4200 line, the GranSport had a lot to live up to and on its day, it wont disappoint. Quite how frequently those days crop up will largely depend on how dutiful the previous owner has been but there also seems to be an element of luck of the draw, with some new GranSports performing acceptably in terms of reliability and others being nothing but an ongoing headache. Accept that youre not going to be getting German style build integrity and budget accordingly. The GranSport philosophy is one of more power, less weight and an all round sharper driving experience. The unusual sill extensions worn by the GranSport arent the most elegant pieces of body addenda Ive ever seen but they help give the car a more planted, pugnacious look than the standard Coupe. A subtle boot spoiler, a jutting front bumper assembly, a mesh front grille and some very attractive trident-themed nineteen inch wheels help the GranSport justify its premium over the standard Coupe model but the changes dont stop with mere styling accessories. As a car that can be driven primarily on the road with the occasional track day thrown in, it makes a lot of sense. It certainly offers up a far greater sense of occasion than any equivalent Porsche and a cross continental blast to, say, Le Mans or Monaco would be far more enjoyable in the leather-lined sumptuousness of the Maserati than the rather functional German car. Suddenly the GranSport starts to add up. The re-sculpted front seats of the GranSport offer a good deal more support and elsewhere around the cabin are a number of other refinements. Some rather unusual interior finishes are offered. As well as the now rather clichéd carbon fibre trim inserts, theres a material enigmatically dubbed High-Tech thats quite unlike anything Ive ever seen in a passenger vehicle. Its fire retardant properties may well generate a few electrical fire jokes kept in storage from the Biturbo days of the eighties, but it looks very hardwearing and offers a decent degree of grip. Maseratis chief designer is said to have discovered the fabric when attending an Italian fashion show. The Spyders hood seems almost old school, being an electrically folding fabric item which takes quite some time (28 seconds) to raise and lower not something youd expect in a near £70,000 car - especially with Mercedes SL still showing how the whole roof thing is done. Still, with the hood down, the Spyder looks a beauty and even with it up, the lines look agreeably smooth. Quite enough, in other words, to persuade potential buyers of convertible versions of the Aston Martin DB9, Porsche 911 and Jaguar XKR to schedule another test drive into their Blackberries.Youll need to find £40,000 for the first of the 04-plated GranSports with a 55-plated 2005 model year example fetching £47,000. Spyders are still very hard to track down and a Maserati franchised dealer may well be your best bet. Insurance for all models is rated at Group 20.Although no significant mechanical issues surround the GranSport, build quality has been an ongoing concern, and those who expect their cars to function with the metronomic efficiency of a Toyota should probably look elsewhere. Nevertheless, Ferrari instigated a rolling programme of improved quality control, and later cars are noticeably tighter in terms of fit and finish than early cars. If you are giving a GranSport the once over, make sure that all the electrics are operating, that the wheels, tyres and bodywork are in perfect condition and the interior isnt looking too careworn. The leather trim is hardy, but try to avoid the paler colours that get dirty extremely quickly. The big thing to check with the GranSport is the clutch which can be abused by unsympathetic driving. As with any exotic car, it is usually a good investment to shell out for a professional inspection.(approx prices based on 2004 GranSport Coupe) Compared to many exotics, a new clutch assembly is fairly reasonable, retailing at around £480, but front brake pads are pricey at £255 a pair and £280 for a set of rears. A new exhaust system is around £3,600 excluding catalysts and an alternator costs approximately £490.Performance took a dolly step forward over the stock 4200 with the top speed inching up to 180mph although the sprint to 60mph remains pegged at 4.8 seconds. That 4.8 seconds will live with you for some time should you ever attempt to ape a Maserati test driver. Only one transmission is available for the GranSport and its a sequential manual six-speed paddle-shift system. With the transmission switched to Sport mode, the Maserati can swap cogs with astonishing brutality, smashing through the gears far quicker than a human hand could guide a gearstick around a gate. In standard manual mode, the software ensures that you cant engage a gear that will damage the gearbox, will auto-upshift when the car reaches the redline or downshift when the 1200rpm stall point is reached. Should you merely wish to waft around enjoying the ambience, the automatic mode does a passable imitation of a proper torque converter-equipped slushbox but you suspect youre missing the point. It also makes some curious rattling noises on low-speed downshifts. Best to flip it back to manual and enjoy zipping up and down the gears just for the sake of it, relishing the engines delicious throttle blip as you knock the gearbox down a couple of cogs as you enter your favourite hairpin. Bystanders may attribute the perfect heel and toe downchange to you by the bark from the engine, although the speed of the subsequent upshifts may betray your electronic assistant, especially if you switch to Sport mode. Fuel consumption is extremely heavy with many drivers averaging around 12-13mpg in everyday conditions. With a massively charismatic engine, huge sense of occasion and distinctive styling, the Maserati GranSport feels like a throwback to the golden age of Italian supercars. Unfortunately build quality is often of a previous era with minor trims and electronic functions failing with quite some regularity. Youll probably need to look at two or three lemons to find a decent car but many deem the rewards to outweigh the risks. Buy with care and you could net a gem.

Maserati Gran Turismo : SUPER GRAN

Car And Driving - Maserati goes back to its roots with the GranTurismo coupe. Steve Walker reportsStylish, luxurious but still a potent performance weapon, the Maserati GranTurismo is a step back from the ground occupied by serious performance sportscars. With 405bhp pulsing from its 4.2-litre Ferrari-built V8, however, its serious enough for most.We mere mortals might find this difficult to comprehend but you can tire of life with a supercar. Everyone will have a different threshold but at some stage, all that cruising round Monte-Carlo in the moonlight and the endless blasts up the Stelvio Pass just lose their sheen. When the furious rush of acceleration no longer intoxicates like it did and you simply cant be bothered to drop a window in a tunnel, shift down a couple of cogs and let the engines banshee wail electrify your spine, you know youve gone over the edge. Its time to garage the thoroughbred exotica and spend some time enjoying something a little more reserved and less highly strung. Every international playboy should have a spot in their dehumidified garage for the Maserati GranTurismo. Were seeing a subtle repositioning of the Maserati brand. The famous Italian manufacturer is being edged out from the shadow of Ferrari where its resided for too long and the GranTurismo will be central to determining its new resting place in the market. Along with the Quattroporte four-door saloon on which it is based, the GranTurismo is a slightly different kind of Maserati. Rather than simply offering top-end Italian sportscars for people who cant quite afford one, the marque is focusing more acutely on luxury, comfort and the understated elegance thats always been part of the Maserati package. Performance nuts need not despair, though. Well still get our fair share of brutal performance and finely-honed handling. Power for the GranTurismo comes from the same Ferrari-sourced 4. 2-litre V8 engine thats found in the Quattroporte saloon but here, its up-rated by 5bhp to give a 405bhp maximum output. In the interest of keeping the GTs performance accessible without requiring its driver to keep the needle bouncing off the 7,100rpm red line, 75% of the 460Nm maximum torque is available at 2,500rpm with the full whack produced at 4,750rpm. All of this makes the GranTurismo capable of a 177mph top speed with the 0-62mph sprint covered in 5.2s. Its not in the supercar bracket but that should be plenty for the playboy on his day off. The GranTurismo has obviously been designed to entertain as well as cosset its driver. The front-engined rear-wheel drive layout helps it achieve a well balanced 49/51 weight distribution and the automatic gearbox with its wheel-mounted paddle shifters adapts to your driving style as well as to the prevailing road conditions."Maseratis Grand Turismo is refreshing in that its a GT car that lives up to its name."Build quality was never a major strongpoint of the Maserati Coupe but the GranTurismo addresses this while updating the design and detailing that go into making a Maserati feel special. The car is a sizable 4,881mm in length, so its a good 500mm longer than the old Coupe but the wheelbase is 126mm shorter than the Quattroporte from which it borrows its basic underpinnings. Crucially to the more practical and luxurious direction that Maserati is being led in, the GranTurismo is a 2+2 and although claims by the manufacturer that it can sit "two adults comfortably even on longer journeys" do stretch the limits a little, theres definitely room for a pair of kids in those sculpted rear seats. The exterior lines have real drama about them, a progression as they are from the well received Birdcage concept car that was also styled by Pininfarina. The three holes behind the front wheelarch reference the Quattroporte saloon and the gaping Maserati grille with its silver trident dominates the front end below the long bonnet that plunges at the nose. Theres power in the muscular hindquarters with the curves at the rear bulging around to form the integrated boot spoiler. Inside, the cabin is split in two by the wide transmission tunnel while the V design at the top of the dash is said to increase the sporty feel by making occupants feel like theyre sitting lower in the car. The seats all feature the trident logo on their headrests and there are subtle chrome inlays for the controls. The likes of Jaguar and Aston Martin wont be overly keen on the idea of a competitive 2+2 Maserati grand tourer and neither will Porsche, BMW and Mercedes. Maserati has a presence in 58 countries on five continents so the base is there for the brand to grow quickly from the 5,700 units sold worldwide in 2006. With Maserati growing in a more mature direction with the GranTurismo, theres space for a focused performance car beneath and Maserati collaborated with Alfa Romeo to develop the 8C Competizione which used a 450bhp 4.7-litre V8 engine. We can reasonably expect to see that powerplant crop up in a quicker version of the GranTurismo in the future and a drop-top spyder model seems inevitable. Running costs for the Maserati GranTurismo might not be supercar in their magnitude but they will probably be as near as damn it. The 4.2-litre V8 is going to suck in fuel and pump out CO2 at a level that no environmentalist without his own personal carbon offset programme is going to countenance. Its safe to say that anyone you see at the wheel of a GranTurismo doesnt have green issues at the top of their priority list. Just be thankful theyre travelling by car and not in their private jet. GT is an evocative badge thats bandied about all over the motor industry but not everyone always seems completely certain about what its evocative of. You can find it gracing the tailgates of superminis and family cars or in the nomenclature of the most exclusive supercars but Maseratis Grand Turismo is refreshing in that its a GT car that lives up to its name. Fast, stylish and capable of covering transcontinental distances while keeping occupants and their designer luggage in the rarefied atmosphere to which they are accustomed. Thats the GT and thats the Maserati GranTurismo. Emphasis has obviously gone into raising the quality of the interior for the GranTurismo while the elegant styling looks a successful development on the classic Maserati themes. Amid all the talk of four passengers, chrome inlays and Poltrona Frau leather, its important to remember that theres a 405bhp performance sportscar lurking here. The GT concept asks a lot of the cars that try to fulfil it and it looks like the Maserati GranTurismo will make a better attempt than most.
